In reality, they were 8bit+frc. Xperia 1 did the same. GSMarena confirmed this in their review.
Go check in the display section.
GSMarena made no mistake in their spec sheet.

The phone itself shows that the people from sony are able to listen to their customers, it's a good step forward. Now they have to improve in the other parts like marketing, faster release after announcement, etc.

They dont RnD or innovate anymore, just release some generic smartphones today, to keep the brand presence afloat.
Sonys mobile on the other has joined the Electronics division, so RnD portfolio exchange and marketing budget is now greatly improved... thus the new and very interesting Xperia 1/1mkII line.
I believe that from now on, Sonys smartphone buissness can, and will gradually build up and return the fanbase back, resulting in more profit.

Tann Hauser, 08 May 2020Dont worry about Sony Xperia fan base or sales numbers. S... moreHTC also didn't rely only on Smartphones, they have also their VR Devices for example. But if one division only loses money year after year and "only exists" because your use money from other parts of the company at some point they have to/will close that division. Even if you want to continue it for prestige, your shareholders will at some point tell you otherwise.

S... morewell as company if the sales are very low and pretty much losing money every year, at some point they'll close that division. do you remember VAIO? i hope the mobile division in sony is not like that

plenty of great japanese companies forced to sold/closed the division that made them famous in the first place in recent years. sony probably is the last bastion

I'm very much looking forward to this phone. Best looking phone of 2020. The ONLY phone with front facing stereo + dolby atmos + headphone jack. I will bet it has best camera of 2020, 1.8um pixels with Zeis T* lens, Bionz image processing and 70mm portrait lens!!

Sony is a large multunational company not based solely on smartphone portfolio like HtC, so they certainly wont stop making innovative new smartphones based on weaker sales and incomes.
And if it is of any insight, being the most popular flagship of 2020 atm on Arena, without even being released yet, Xperia 1 mk II will increase back Sonys mobile fanbase and sale numbers.

Anonymous, 08 May 2020Last year's Xperia 1 wasnt true 10bit. It's got 16M color.... moreThat is plainly put just not true for Xperia 1.
Xperia 1 mk II has exactly the same screen as Xperia 1.

And arena should rectify their mistake, as numerous other reviewers, and official Sony site stated 10 bit, meaning 1B color support.

Anonymous, 07 May 2020May be you are talking this, as you have not used sony Mobi... moreUntil now I have mostly used HTC Phones (Desire, Sensation XE, One M9, currently I am using a HTC 10). The problem with the price is not because of the quality, but at the moment they first have to regain market share. Apple can make their prices like they do because if you want iOS, you have not much of a choice but to buy a phone from them. And also Apple has a big fanbase/hype around it (like Samsung) with lots of people who spend such amounts of money, so they can allow themselves to charge those prices.

The problem of Sony phones is that they are not widely known (many people don't even know that they are still selling phones), in many country's you have to import their phones since they're not selling them there, and it takes them too long to release the phones. Many people have already switched to another phone since they're tired of waiting and the prices of the other phones are already dropping.
The only people who will buy this phone for the price are mostly either the "hardcore Sony fans" or people who want it for it's features, since there are not many alternatives if you want a 3,5mm jack, no notch/punch hole etc.

The latter is the reason I sticked with my HTC 10 until now, the Sony 1 II is the first phone that I consider as a good upgrade for it. But I only found it because I actively searched for such phones.

All the others will only think "Why should I buy this phone if I can have a Samsung etc for the same/less money than that". If Sony had an equally large fanbase like Samsung or Apple it wouldn't be that much of a problem, but as it is now I see them go the same way like HTC.

On paper, this phone seems to be really promising. I'll even go as far as to say it's deserving to be actually labeled as a flagship phone compared to all of the competitors on the market. It's literally the only non-gamer oriented phone to gather missing essential features like the headphone jack, the microSD slot, a high quality AMOLED display without a disgusting notch among others. To think that it took this much time before seeing such a device being announced is baffling, but better late than never. I pray that this greatness on paper will translate into a solid device in real case use, especially for that price range. I'm also hoping for the bootloader to be unlockable so that we could see roms like LineageOS being developed for this phone, then it'd be the icing on the cake. Are Xperia/SONY phones known to hinder custom rom development and such?
