I think majority of regular users to casual gamers would stick with 4K@90Hz display over FHD or QHD@120Hz. If I had to choose a flagship smartphone for competitive gaming. It is obvious I would choose ASUS ROG Phone 3 when it launches.

They can GIVE option for 120hz@ 1080p or QHD.
At 1200 Euros, 120hz screen is standard especially in 2020.

The Snapdragon 865 on the Xperia alone would automatically command a higher price tag compared to the Exynos 9611 on the Galaxy. On top of that, the Xperia has 5G support (the Galaxy does not) and a more premium build (aluminum and glass on the Xperia vs glasstic on the M31). Not to mention that the Xperia 1 II has an IP65/68 water/dust rating. While both phones have OLED displays, the Xperia 1 II edges the Galaxy with its DCI P3 color and HDR support. All of these high-end features added together would merit a higher price tag.

Oh i like this already, Sony has been making really good smartphones since the ericsson.
But what i don't understand is why the price is so high..
I mean there is the galaxy M31 at $200 and packs so many features including a bigger battery and a 64mp camera.. sure the M31 doesn't have as many features as this but i still don't think it's worth the extra $700
Would anyone be so kind to explain?

Instead giving us smooth transition similar to 90Hz implementation is better than having nothing. Even this is taxing on processor and battery. Unless phone packs a good 8000mAh to 10000mAh in addition to having heavy cooling system like ROG Phone 2. That enters into gaming territory. Phone becomes much heavier and thicker.

No wonder their marketshare is declining.

                    Sony is officially back!

Very impressive Sony! Only bad thing.. is that this phone is WAYYY too big.. Sony PLEASE do a smaller version of it.. and i will buy those phones to all my family..

21:9... I'm still using my XA Ultra 2 because I just can't imagine typing on that skinny phone. I've used the XA 2 Plus (18:9) and that was fine. I'll have to visit Best Buy and sample the 10 Plus. I love the specs and the headphone jack, but 21:9... ;-|

Waitung for that! I have to give up my Huawei P30 Pro. Huawei-Phones don't support VoLTE and WifiCall for many providers in Germany. All other phone brands work for all providers, not Huawei.

So, I am looking forward to Sony Xperia 1 II !

Only XZ3 had 7000 aluminium because the frame was so thin every other Sony had 6000 and the biggest build quality complain with every Sony flagship is how soft the aluminium is as it easily gets dinged and scratched.

                                    But on the subject,
90 hz eqivalent motion blur reduction I believe is on X1 for mobile processing back, which will be more gentle on battery consumption as opossed to enabling screen hardwares 90 hz...

On DAC, I believe Sony uses Qualcomms dedicated co processor space on SD itself for sound processing...

On earphone impedance value....I ve been on that subject numerous times, but Sonys choice for lower impedance earphones, coupled with their noise reduction to compensate for lower max volumes, saves a lot on battery and keeps same quality. Case for lower impedance choice proven, are these here wireless Sony earphones I got, that last 17 hr on one charge (a whole weeks use), whilst some other standard impedance ones last 8 hr tops with about same maH (2-3 day use between charging).

Battery keeps with BatteryCare, which prolongs minimum charging time

So yeah, Sony as always, keeps their best balanced tech usage choices...
Unfortunately, many not so tech savy reviewers, keep on bashing em for those ("... earphones not so loud, too long to charge up to 100, bla, bla, etc, etc...")

Tann Hauser, 01 Mar 2020Although 24 mpx is the golden spot of Sonys Alpha series ca... moreYes and this time SONY got lot many things right.

Display. 4K 21:9 90Hz OLED. 10Bit(8Bit+FRC). Definitely better than QHD@60Hz or FHD@120Hz so claimed HDR10+(I highly doubt implementing it is gonna help SAMSUNG with their saturated displays instead of making it further worse, lets see how good or bad that ends up being)

Headphone jack. 360° Audio and Trues Hi-Res audio support on their stereo speakers as well as 3.5mm Jack. The only thing I want to know is tat the inbuilt DAC is it the same as XZ Premium or a further improvement from that. The XZ Premium DAC was the best amongst the smartphones till date as it was clean and high and was able to draw headphones under 100ohm impedance with no problem. If it is the same no issues but if it is a further improvement over it I would be more than happy.

4000mAh battery. We all know how well managed SONY's battery implementation have been in past few years. But it still concerns me a bit as driving 4K@90Hz is not a simple task. It surely will be huge improvement over last gen offering and will last one whole day no matter how intensely you use it.

Most importantly notch-less display. Thank god. I am fed-up with ugly notches blocking part of the screen and brands trying to work around it by making it even uglier.

Vineet Reddy, 01 Mar 2020Don't know why people are unable to understand how cameras ... moreAlthough 24 mpx is the golden spot of Sonys Alpha series cameras, the good ol Alpha 7 series still has 12 mpx models, praised for low light performance, but those have only 10AF and less AF sensor coverage, whilst this mobile cam has 20AF and 70 percent AF coverage.
And lets not forget that iToF sensor reaches out 5 meters detection.

With that ZEISS and T coating lens, and Photo Pro cam interface, I believe we are entering the proper near mirrorless Alpha camera performance on mobile here.

Thus the name Xperia 1 mark II, to come along with Sonys Alpha camera naming scheme.

But hey, thats only the camera part of this smartphone marvel.
