Peter.H, 08 Mar 2024Hi there,
I'm an audiophile and love the audio qualit... moreThis depends on your audio files and listening setup, and is subjective. I rip CDs at near-max quality (average .flac size for me hovers around 110MB). I need music to work (unless it's health-and-safety related) and will almost always pair my phone with wired earphones / headphones from a range of price ranges. Cheapest is a XBA-C10 which I use for travelling. At home depending on what I feel like I would use a XBA-H3, MDR-V6, CD900ST, or (via USB with an adapter) the 1ADAC, all with custom pads. I also pair this via the 3.5mm or USB to a hybrid vacuum tube amp, with which I use any of the above as well or full-range wooden speakers. The phone drives all the above without too much hassle. For anything audio I usually go with Sony as I prefer their sound signature. Wireless I have tried, and was very disappointed with, Sony's WF-1000XM3 and M4 - all sounded overly processed and returned both after purchase. Saying that, I sometimes use a cheap Panasonic S300 which I find more natural (and ironically more 'Sony') than the 1000XM3 and M4 did.
I despise Dolby Atmos - it's a useless one-size-fits-all solution that isn't really a solution. For me it sounds like it compresses rather than processes my .flac files, and leave that off. I don't use Sony's HQ settings (the quality 'upscaler') as my source files are already almost maxxed out, though I have tried it out of curiosity with a 320kps MP3 file and do notice some extra 'warmth' in the mids though not much else. It's a marketing thing no doubt.
Overall it's pretty flat, and does uphold Sony's audio standards of yesteryear to an extent. Then again my experience with audio spans over 30 years and most young people today won't appreciate (or know) what Sony's audio standard used to be nor how to tailor audio experiences with their setup. Audiophile is a meaningless term for me - I have set standards with audio and with my setup 99.9% people can't hear the difference nor care for it. Hence why, this is all subjective.
