The flashlight is pretty weak, not as strong as other phones. In answer to a previous poster's question, no I don't think you could use it to shoot video at night. I'm with you, really loving the phone. I'm gonna have to check out XDA for the things you mentioned. Thanks for the write-up.

I have just ordered the 512GB model in Frosted Black. I tweeted Sony UK and asked about this model specifically. They said it was only available in 256GB.

It should arrive here in 6 days. I'm upgrading from the Xperia XZ3 which has served me quite well.

Random anon here. Received mine a few days ago, and I like it more each day. Front facing speakers are something I can't seem to sacrifice, and these are okay I guess. It has that fake low end sound that makes deeper voices sound like they're speaking through a fan, but other than that the speakers are good. I also notice that the low end rolls off more after you go past 75% volume. Great stereo separation, and it sounds balanced with a surprisingly wide frequency response range. It's on the quieter side compared to my old phone (ZTE Axon 7...yeah I needed an upgrade), but at least the speakers are facing the right way.

The screen runs at 2560x1096 the majority of the time, only running in 4k for select apps, but you can force 4k using ADB. There's a guide on XDA for the howto, pretty easy. So, my phone is running at 4k 120hz all the time. Battery life hasn't really seemed to change much, and the higher pixel density is welcome.

The flashlight is pretty weak. Since there is no dual-led flash, you can't expect too much though. I guess it'll work in a pinch. I'm talking about use as a flashlight. I don't take night pictures.

Not a fan of the google assistant button since I rarely use it, but someone wrote a magisk module to configure it. It's on XDA. I haven't used it yet, but I'm thinking single press for the home button (ergonomics), double press for flashlight, hold for screenshot.

Phone is noticeably quick from a latency standpoint. Very little delay after tapping an icon or something which is really refreshing.

The cameras are actually good guys. The major downside is its sensor size. You can only take in so much light with the comparatively small sensors (versus the S21U/Mi11U/etc), but the pictures still look great. I take photos of moving targets, and the eyetracking is a godsend. Colors are natural looking, sharpness is good, basic mode is surprisingly good (little difference between what I can manage in manual mode), and the camera ui is excellent. It has its challenge shots, but for the pictures I take it isn't much of an issue. Overall a solid package.

The screen brightness is sufficient outdoors. It's only a challenge to look at the phone when the sun is beaming directly on it, and you still have just enough brightness to use the phone. More brightness would be nicer, but the phone is in my pocket oftentimes outdoors anyway, so I'm fine with it. That being said, it's more than enough brightness indoors. Color accuracy is great once you enable creator mode in settings.

You can't uninstall the two games on here taking up space, but bloatware overall is mininal I guess. I've disabled most so I don't have to see the icons for now. I can always add an sd card if I need more space, so I'll just leave it at that. Can't say the same for other phones.

I'm not really on my phone at work, so by the time I get home the battery level is still in the 70s, sometimes 80s. The phone can get warm, but it hasn't throttled on me, nor has the hot battery notification come up. That's with the phone at 4k 120hz with medium-high brightness, sometimes at max. Just keep in mind I'm not on my phone all the time, so my usage habits probably wont get it to overheat.

Side sense is a chore for how I use my phone, but it's nice to swipe down on it to go back. I wish I could swipe up or left so I could bring up the home screen. The aspect ratio does take some getting used to, but after forcing 4k its not that bad. The vertical real estate is nice when reading, and I'm starting to make use of the split-screen functionality, something I wouldn't dare bother do on any other display.

My friend has an S21U. I tried it briefly, and it is a nice phone, just not for me. The hole punch, the curved corners, the front/'bottom speakers, weird aspect ratio, it's all strange to me. I just can't see myself using a mainstream phone like that. The S21U's cameras are technically superior, but the 1iii just looks more natural to me. If the 1iii had a wider dynamic range, then I would have no complaints.

If the stuff I talked about in this post hits home with you, then the 1iii is your phone, especially if you want to flash roms and get really deep in customization. It's an excellent platform for that, the best of all released flagship phones imo.

Fired off some pictures at a wedding over the weekend. Mostly basic mode, with some sunset shots with AutoHDR on and I'm impressed. I really had none of the issues other reviewers were whining about. Crisp, sharp and looked great. Wish it was easy to just drop a few shots here in the comments.

Sony is the only company knows how to design pretty phones

Just received the package with the Xperia 1iii and the Sony 1000XM3 headphones. Going to open it tonight. I feel confident that I will be satisfied since I change from the Xperia 1 with the XM3 headphones:)

I bought the black one but I think the grey looks better but it is not available in the Swedish market

For me it was a no brainer to shift to the Xperia 1iii after my 2 years with the Xperia 1. I have been very satisfied Sony customer for ages now.

They seem to make users be more pro-active on trying to manually adjust the perfect image they want to get w/c most users are likely to dislike since they just want to point and click pictures the easy way w/c is understandable in a most non technical users.

So I can turn the phone off at night and it will turn itself on say at 5 AM automatically. The way I use my phone I rarely ever tough the power button. I use an app called "Power Menu" version 1.12 which gives me a quick tile to shut down/reboot or emergency. The newer version requires an extra step so I use an older version.

As I'm sitting here responding to these questions, I'm listening to music on the phone speakers. I've never done that with my other phones, but it's pretty good. Not tinny like so many others.

I use it because I love all the integrated shortcuts and being able to get to whatever I want simply and easily. It should be the standard setup, although I get that people like simplified. Although having an app drawer of 300 different things is not simple IMO.

I tried a remap of the Google Assistant button with Assist Manager which has worked on previous devices. No go. Do the remap, but when pushing the button, it pops up a screen saying "set google as the default assist...." so they obviously have some system-level code that can't be overridden at this point.

And are you wondering if there's an automatic reboot that can be done nightly? I haven't looked into that, but could check. On your phone, there's a setting for that? Where is it buried? I can check.

Can the dedicated assistant button be remapped...somehow? Is there a setting allowing the phone to schedule power on from completely off? Everyone say it cannot be done but I have it on my OnePlus 8T and it works great...so it CAN be done.

I'd like to know how is the flashlight. It's useful or not? On XZ or Z3 you can't see almost nothing with it. Can't even film in the night.

It was always a thing that One has to be an actual user to appreciate why a Sony phone is one of the best products on the market.
Rews tend to ommit so much appreciable stuff, that user actually finds out only when holding and using the phone.
Just remember to give its AI some 2 weeks time to adapt its battery usage and charging to your app usage scenario. I suggest doing some batterylife tweaks also, and keep it at 60 hz for starters.

Mangoon, 27 Aug 2021Phone in hand, but only since last night! First impression... moreCongrats my dude. I certainly can't wait to get it on my hands but...I have to wait 2 weeks still.

Phone in hand, but only since last night! First impressions, I'm thrilled. I remember my old LG V30 that I absolutely loved, and it died, so I went to the G8 which had decent reviews at the time. Figured it wouldn't be much of a different feel and experience from the V30, but it always just felt like a phone, nothing that I got much enjoyment from. This phone brings back the excitement of the V30 and then some.

The operation is insanely smooth. And the screen is positively gorgeous. And it's fast. I really can't believe how much quicker this is than the 855 from the G8. I haven't had nearly enough time to play around with most of the settings. The sound quality from the front speakers is impressive, with equal true stereo. Wireless with the WF-1000XM3's is exceptional. Best wireless experience I've had. Haven't had time to see how they drive my Bose 700's yet. Looking forward to that.

There are a ton of little settings to tweak and mess around with. I'm running Nova Launcher Prime as my launcher, and it works well. In fact, all of the Sony-specific settings and toys (like side sense) are still available within the launcher. My brother sent me a songlist from Tidal that is specific for the 360 sound, and the experience is amazing, even with the wireless XM3's.

No overheating issues with games and the like, just got one notification on initial setup and downloading of apps that the phone was heating up, but it didn't feel hot to me. Initial impressions, I'm thrilled. Absolutely could not be happier and more excited with my decision. Slapped a 512 card in there, can download and store as much Hi-Def music as I want for use away from Wifi and the like. Absolutely zero regrets.

Sony produces excellent image sensors for the best flagship smartphones of other brands. Sony's Alpha series cameras are of the best in the world. BUT Sony doesn't achieve to make a competitive smartphone camera setup with its own leading know-how and smartphone image sensors? INCOMPETENT or PIECEMEAL STRATEGY?
