120hz/FHD and 120hz/UHD, that makes much more sense now because the SD888 is not capable of 4K/120hz

i have an S10+ samsung, and i have the same feelings toward my phone like you do to to yours. it has micro sd card slot, headphone jack with 32bit audio sampling and for being a 2019 year phone it has surprisingly capable camera, plus i don't get any accidental touches. but my phone doesn't have 2 mm of top and bottom wasted for nothing!
now don't get me wrong i really admire what sony does and as i said in my post it's long time i'm looking to get a sony phone. it's just i can't justify those huge chin and notch at the top and bottom. you can argue the front firing speakers, but we have phones with all screen front who has front firing speakers!
now i don't care for under screen finger print scanner, and some other stuff, but i can't justify those bars! they make the phone disproportionally too tall, like a remote! other than watching movies 21:9 which only netflix has, there is no advantage! plus it makes reading websites and texts harder.

Front firing speakers and LED not... moreto me it's dead space! again, it's 2021! we have under display cameras, under display speakers, always on displays! my samsung galaxy S8+ has it(always on display)! you don't have to lose 2 millimeter of the top and bottom of the phone for implementing an expired tech! would you take a closer look at it. the phone is too tall, and narrow! it's like holding a remote! plus it will make reading stuff and websites harder on it! and 4k oled on that size screen?! are we watching our phones with microscope?!
you can argue all day long, but to me this sony xperia 1 III is samsung galaxy s8+!
your analogy is like a fat man trying to justify the benefits of being fat!
compare 1III to galaxy S10+ for half price! and it's 2019 phone!
for hefty 1200$ price tag! I'd go for S21 Ultra any day!

To those saying the cameras suck, unless you really need to print photos that cover a football pitch on a daily basis, 12MP is actually very sufficient.
Even some Mid range DSLRs dont cross 20MP.. its all about the other settings too..
The rest use big numbers for marketing. But in actual reality, its useless

Flat screen that is better calibrated, no cutouts and higher resolution.
Front speaker are better experience the beside usb speaker.
Photo/Cinema Pro.
Better heat management.
LDAC (it is part of AOSP but not all phones have, OEMs need to pay sony to use).
Battery health tools.
Faster update to android 12 ( surely before new year)

Samsung and Apple are stealing and lying all the time (there are enough proofs of that). Then they have to pay fines and for using patents without permission, but they are all too low regarding how much they earned because of their imorality. Sony is one of the most sincere companies (Read the book from Akio Morita, the founder of Sony, maybe you'll get why Sony is a good company. In fact Apple was visiting Sony before Apple got famous. They learnt a lot from them). In general Japan companies are more responsible and more sincere.
Otherwise - the headphones jack, no notch/nothing (I have no idea who has problems with III's bezels. At least you can hold a Sony phone normally and you don't have a bended screen, you don't touch anything accidently), the best aspect ratio 21:9 (once you've watched a movie on it, you'll love it. Otherwise the keyboard opens and you still have a 16:9 display above it, it's very comfortable in hands), SD Card is an important option for many. I prefer paying more for the device to get more memory. Sony's Android is very close to original Android from Google, no bload-ware (anymore), great sound (2 front facing stereo speakers!!!), a great camera (all are using filter without users knowing, with Sony you decide yourself with filter you want to use, or not use), the best position for fingerprint sensor, a dedicated button for taking photos/focusing, ...
And one very BIG problem with Sony phones. They are working for at least 3 years. Why is this a problem? Sony owners don't have to change their phones more often than once in 3 years or even less. My previous phone was XZ Premium, before that Z5 Premium, and even before Z and Z Ultra. I still have all of them.
I'm the proud owner of Sony Xperia 1 II Dual SIM, White (very rare model). I'd love to get the new phone (because of the camera, even better and louder sound), but there is not enough arguments.
Why I'm not using an iPhone? Because I need customizations that Android is offering me.
What I miss on my phone? The old Album app from Sony. Google Photos isn't so comfortable to use, but I know, I could use something else.
