I think it's bad that only apple is able to build a compact cell phone Iphone 12 mini perfect size for a compact. I've always had androit and sony but apparently sony and samsung are no longer able to build small cell phones

In regard to the finger print sensor, I think Sony have nailed it with the side button. I had a Sony with side sensor and last time switched to Samsung with rear sensor and the sensor on the back is an absolute pain. You keep hitting the camera lens and its not naturally where your finger sits when picking up the phone. The batteries on Sony phones may be smaller than the competition but my battery drains very quick on my Samsung in just a year. Never had that trouble with xz premium or xz3

I was looking at this phone, wish the camera's were a little bit better and I don't know if I want to give up my wireless charging as I am very good at ruining ports. But furthermore it ticks a lot of my boxes
- small enough to carry around without falling out of my hand (below 75mm including case)
- IP-rating
- wide angle AND telephoto camera
- headphone jack
- OLED
- sd card slot
- no ugly noth
- no camera square (it is so ugly)
- battery life better than current phone
Or maybe I will keep my LG G7. Depends on the software. I don't know, is Sony using clean Android? I don't really like that 😅

CJ, 15 Oct 2020With regards to back-mounted fingerprint sensor, that'... moreagree... since it is also true to my use case... it is also natural placement... everytime i pick my z5 premium and press the power button, it unlocks... so it is like the old days when there was no fingerprint sensor like z1 compact and z3...
i also have the xz2 compact that has fingerprint sensor at the back, and ye, i have to lift it everytime i need to unlock it...
xperia 1ii and 5ii leveled up, since you do not need to press the sensor to unlock, just place the finger, it unlocks...
but of course, the practicality of the placement depends on use cases... the sidemount, exactly on the power button just feels natural to me...

The only thing what bothers me about this phone is the button layout. The fingerprint sensor should be positioned higher and the volume buttons should be on the left side. Also it is way too sensitive and I end up accidentally unlocking the phone all the time.

LOL @ those who are saying they are not happy as this phone does not have an IR sensor. Really? IR? This ain't 2006. Imagine being told all the specs the phone has and you tell them the reason you're not buying the phone; "I don't like it as it doesn't have an IR Sensor". Hahahaha What next? "I don't like this phone as it doesn't have a removable battery". Or, "I don't like this phone as doesn't have a FM radio".
This phone is amazing. My only wish was that it had Face Unlock.

Well, at half the max brightness levels...I got 12 hr screen on time, and 40 hr between charge.
And I did everything: used camera, played games, streamed music and video, surfed the web, played with settings, made calls.
It amazes me :)

Personally, I think back-mounted fingerprint sensor is totally not useful and unintuitive. I never place my index finger on the back of the phone, and if the sensor is on the back, I can't unlock my phone with it still on the desk. I would have to pick it up every time just to unlock it. With a side mounted FP sensor, everything is smooth, intuitive and convenient.

will not be 5G compatible in the US. I was so excited to get this phone but that is the dealbreaker. Maybe someday Sony.

To all trolls out there
1) IP rating is not a gimmic if you actually use your phone outside (running, hiking, cycling, motorcycling, swimming, skiing, snowboarding etc.)
2) This phone doesn't need more than 4000mAh, it has 10 hours of SOT thanks to Sony's battery management.
3) This phone doesn't need more than 128GB unless the you are a 10 year old kid who wants to install hundreds of games into it.
4) Number of megapixels doesn't mean anything, my old Z3C has 24MP and the photos are trash compared to the 5 II camera.

UFS3.0 used by Sony has faster speed than the UFS3.0 used by OP and UFS3.1 used by Redmi.
Different suppliers = different speed.
Chinese phones and their cheaper parts.

Fingerprint (side-mounted) is also a thing which no one ever asked for, this not even a trend - mere another industry's failed experiments or whims - totally unrelated to people's needs - just the same as for curved screen edges which are totally impractical. Fingerprint sensor placement on the back of the phone - most logical and most convenient or do it like it was designed by Steve & introduced by Apple. No need reinvent this. According to phone evolution - sizes are getting ridiculously bigger and phone models change every 1/2 year - without substantial reasoning about why anybody would need a new phone every year - just a little bit better, but not a revolution in communications or entertainment ways anymore. That's why average item price does not meet it's value which over the years is degraded to phone size, pixels, CPU and weight (pure nonsense). The most inventive phones over the time were made by Siemens (Siemens SL45), Sony (K750i) - these phones revolutionized communications and entertainment. Nokia 3310 revolutionized sturdiness and product life cycle - did ever one of big brands have sold phones like these after that? No one. I'm not talking about Sony's pioneering in water resistancy in phone market here. Besides CAT may be rather good, but they suck anyway. Most inventive smartphone, which in my view saw light was built by Samsung - Galaxy Beam i8530. So tell me now, why everyone is talking about 5G hype nonsense apart from the stock option to have a small projector in every bloody Hi-End phone - or for business men & journalists - built in voice distortion tool. I don't need each time a damn bigger "knife board" i want standardized sizes & larger spectrum of specs that same companies already introduced before and without striping today's phones away from more classic & standart phone elements. Why there still are no free-off-charge decent apps for Android, and phones ar packed with bloatware? Too many things are still not being adressed. The aftermarket also has many questions to address - with an ongrowing waste problem i would completely ban Tempered Glass Screen Protectors which compered to first generation of elactic screen protectors are total crap.

mixedfish, 14 Oct 2020My XZ premium is now over 3 years old and the battery life ... morez5 premium user here! though this really has low battery endurance... i still can last a day... on my 4th hour of sot - mostly social media, using mobile data, some videos and photos taking... xperia deserves a long long long term review...
never repaired or replaced anything on it... though most of my phones are like that... even the nokia 909...
so, in a way... quality phones are way cheaper in the long run... than buying higher spec low price phone but you end up buying annually... not that i dont buy a phone yearly, but at least most of them are still working...

But I grew accustomed to online radio that became more customer specialised media.
And it became low data use feature long time ago. Even my prepaid 4 gb 7€/monthly plan is enough to listen to it for hours ocassionaly.

Got hands, 14 Oct 20200.0005%? Really? Well That's your opinion. Unfortunate... moreAll of my IOT home appliances use bt or wifi, some via NFC. ..my washing machine, my refrigerator, my climate cooler, my TV, my bedroom lights switch...
None of them have IR sensor listed as an option.
Maybe I am oblivious of IR sensor use in IOT appliances, but I have yet to see or buy one that uses it.
p.s. Bt 5 is really low energy level consumer, certainly less than active IR sensor.
