You can scream, and shout and let it all out but Sony fans know the real value of Sony and will buy it either way. Raw android is totally useless, oem still need to reprogram all the necessary kernel amd driver, not to mention all the skin and feature also ui element
Thats what come from my experience about custom ROM,
About price, yup it a little bit on the high side, but to me it's a good investment, i use a sony at average for 3 years, so the cost of a phone is devided to 3 years, since I don't buy phone yearly, it's not just about the phone durability, it also about consistency in performance, battery life and update, and warranty
Used a samsung before but it give up on me in mere 8 months or so, it start to stutter and freeze as i bloated the phone with apps and file not to mention the battery degradation
Also once bought(import) some cheap phone from online store, well it usable, but as secondary phone that is, it can't go with my long live expectancy of a device, it start to stutter, aging battery

Update is provided by Sony but all work to make oreo comes to Google and people who making it.
After sale service depends on country.
For example if you live in North Korea i will hardly believe you will have any phone at all from any brand. Some goes for countries from for example Micronesia, Polynesia etc.
In my country for example we have problems with services for like 60 different brands.
Only a company i work for sells over 40 different brands.
Sony is good but a bit pricey same like apple or samsung.
As i said abobve we havent problems here in Slovakia with repairing phones like oukitel, Doogee and some other brands which not many people know.
My Lenovo Vibeshot is 2,5 years old and still works as a brand new so the reliability depends on every user and how he care and treat his phone. Rest is pure speculation.
And to be honest people were buying apple because they trusted them which is no more since a used batteries in phones problem has been unveiled apple lost many customers and even more they gonna loose when all the dirt apple is hidding will float on reef.

Buying cheap chinese brand like oukitel is good when you need a phone that work, but for serious thing, problem will occur about warranty, durability and reliability
I buy sony half of it because of brand, other half is for product, same with good established brand
Why people buy apple, it dead simple, the convenience of the service, got a broken phone in warranty, either walk out with repaired phone or getting totally new phone, people who had the money to buy apple product usually don't have time to deal with import and outside warranty
