interestingly they have similar width, so not really adjusting with the size, good in the hand... adjusting with the weight though... i cannot imagine how large this will be if they crammed an ois and a large vibrating motor like its siblings...

does anyone know when the new Compact is coming to market?

Another hate I forgot to mention in my review is that the XZ2c doesn't output video through a USB-C to HDMI adaptor. I didn't want to use laggy screen mirroring software through a non existent Wi-Fi network to show photos on a large TV at grandma's place.

SegFisch, 13 Feb 2020I have both the XZ1 Compact and the XZ2 Compact and I have ... moreI found that USB-C analogue earphones worked well for me. They aren't expensive compared to the USB-C digital earphones which some other phones require such as most Pixel phones. If I needed to plug the XZ2c into audio equipment, I did still have to use the annoying adaptor though.

Mara, 17 Apr 2020Is this selfie camera on this phone better than older Sony ... moreMy XZ1c had a better selfie camera than my XZ2c. But overall, I much prefer the XZ2c. I took selfies with the rear camera and the physical camera button. Also, the physical camera button is a godsend for taking photos while the phone is in a waterproof pouch and the outside is wet.

Forgot to mention in my review about one thing I hated about the XZ2c. If you want to run a custom operating system such as LineageOS, there's an issue when unlocking the bootloader with losing the Digital Rights Management keys which enhance the camera and sound. I never unlocked the bootloader for this reason and instead debloated the phone of permission intrusive built-in-apps by using a guide on XDA as a second best option. I think workarounds exist, but aren't perfect. Just beware that Sony is annoying like that.

This phone is very comfortable in your hand, but is a bit awkward to use when laying on a table due to the curved back causing it to rock back and forth as you use the touch screen. A case with built in kickstand fixes that issue though. The USB-C connector is compatible with USB-C type analogue earphones. This a good thing as analogue earphones are significantly cheaper than digital earphones which have a DAC chip built in. So the XZ2c has a DAC built into the phone itself - nice. To use, the processor is powerful for a phone of its age and is a bit more responsive than my new Pixel4a which came out in 2020. The main camera is very good and takes sharp photos, but compared to a Pixel4a, one might notice images are slightly noisy around edges if they are zoomed in (called gibbs artefact I think). The LCD screen is bright and easy to see during the day, but in darkness, the black areas do have a bit of a glow. On the plus side, there is no strobing/flicker which is a problem I noticed with my new Pixel4a with OLED technology. The screen is smaller than many phones, but is usable for people with good eyesight (My previous phone XZ1c screen was too small for prolonged usage for me). After using an XZ2c for 2 and a half years with streaming podcasts during the day at work and heavy usage, the battery health is still excellent. I think this is thanks mainly to the special charging software which charges the phone overnight up to 90% then in the last 30 minutes or so before the morning alarm rings, it charges up to 100%. I also used a slow charger overnight to prevent overheating and if using a fast charger during the day, I took the phone out of its case. What killed my XZ2c? Both microphones ended up not working anymore probably due to sanding dust and salt from marine air exposure. If a cheap reconditioned unlocked XZ2c were available in 2021, I'd recommend you consider it as an option. Another thing I miss about the XZ2c after buying a Pixel4a was the memory expansion. My XZ2c phone had more storage capacity than my laptop! My XZ2c replacement considerations when buying a new phone were Samsung10e, Pixel4a and Pixel5 which are all a bit larger in my pocket.

I'm no engineer but at the time, Sony was the only one cramming so much high end tech into a compact phone (which also achieve a great battery life), so i do believe adding anything more than what is already there, was starting to be a bit too challanging to pull off reliably.

Nokia Lumia 830 would like to have a word with you. That phone also has a 5.0" screen and even has a smaller thickness than this Xperia Compact (8.5mm vs 12.1mm), and yet you got OIS. I could have also included the Microsoft Lumia 950, but that's technically cheating since it has a 5.2" screen.

Does it have rise to wake or double tap to turn on screen?

Strangely the sun... moreFrom owning close to 30 different smartphones over the last 4 years (don't ask), this phone has the best camera. It IS on the noisy side, but in exchange it retains much more finer details than other phones do. The inclusion of OIS would have been great, but probably they had trouble cramming that kind of mechanism in such a small body. Check out the photo compare tool on this website, I've been pixel peeping for hours comparing different phones, you'll see that the XZ2 compact had the best photo quality and resolved details out of almost *any other phone on the market*, yes, I'm not kidding, check thw photo comparison tool, especially the low light photos.
