Display is just better (ofc if you broke it you will cry)
Single speaker isn't that bad since its loud and rich and clear(while for example Nokia 6 had stereo but awful sound) i know it was a mid range but....
Camera is stunning (s9 did a hardware magic while P20 did some software + biggest sensor) and software wins there... It's just a fact but it means that s9 could be better if Sammy do some software tweaks...
Keeping files on USB OTG or Cloud is much safer than SD so it doesn't matter for me...
IR blaster comes useful from time to time...
Notch can be hidden ( i hate notch)
Twighlight colour is unique
Emiui have some features that i like and with emiui themes i can change literally everything from status bars to navigation keys color shape size... Without rooting or 3rd party launchers so i can make pure android if i like...
Amazing charging speed
Best battery in a flagship category at the time of this comment
18:9 aspect ratio is better in my opinion.. I don't mind about black bars, pinch to zoom cuts just a little barely nothing
Wireless charging would be a gimmicky if you consider 4.5V/5A paired with 4000 mAh , nice to have but gimmicky
Well both S9 and P20 are unique about some point but sony isnt at least on this device. I used Z1 old but gold. It was something. It was waterproof,21mpx at the time...
Idk this is just my opinion and I don't trying to argue or offend fans or anyone else... Everyone is different with different needs and opinions so it's stupid to say P20 pro is best out there but it isn't that stupid if i say it is best for me....
I just feel that sony miss software development in mobile division....

Nobody cares about a 4K screen on a phone, as the human eye can't see the difference between 1K and 4K. Only Sony fanboys brag about a feature that the human eye can't see.
4K is great on a large screen TV.

And usually goes with round cornered screen design, which is really utter nonsense.

Most of them are 16:9 7:3 3:1 and so on. So it's just weird because most of the phone are trying to be "bezeless" and taller screen. This causes 16:9 video to be scaled down to "not very fullsceen" and having black bars on either side of the phone , looking even more like a hugely bezel phone.
Now I know what's your thinking , "Zoom to fill" will cut some part of the contents , especially top and bottom.
Unless you're watching real 18:9 content , in which none of the content will have cut off.
About the camera sensor , just the sensor isn't enough. Processing the image is the most important. Just like how some phone has the same sensor as Google pixel and still capture a crappy photo. Because Google pixel's image processing is excellent. It's pretty ironic that Google pixel 2 which has only one camera , scores more than some dual camera *cough* iPhone *cough* X.
2160@60 nonstop recording is not possible with sd845 , while A11 can do with ease. Even the s9 can record 2160@60 but only a specific amount of times.
Well , you prefer p20 pro , thats completely fine! But you have to realize that nowadays phone is just the same.
This includes
Notch display
Tall screen , some even has 19.5 : 9
No 3.5mm jack
No SD Card slot
Mono speaker
No wireless charging (most of them do not , but some are still have like xiaomi mi mix 2s)
While the XZ2 premium has only 1 feature from that list (no jack) , the p20 pro has all six of them.
About the screen , yes. AMOLED screen is awesome. It's very vibrant and contrasty and save battery life. But it has more chance to screen problem than LCD. This includes screen burn in , image retention , splotches , Grains , Color shift , and others. LCD can even get brighter than AMOLED and yet cheaper manufacturing.
Sony don't have to always follow trends all the time , that's just stupid.(and that I mean , why the heck doesn't you include a 3.5 mm jack in this year's phone , huh Sony!!?) Sony have to be unique. You can't find any phone with 4k her apart from in predecessor , xz premium. Sony has a 1080@960 , which Samsung's is still 720@960.
No phone are perfect. Even this phone is kinda like the other phone. I try to be neutral as possible. My choice for best phone is the Samsung Galaxy S9+.

Sux but that's how it is. Hopefully the 855 or whatever won't have that same limitation.

The XZ2 alone, with the same exact camera... moreUmm no, not exactly. XZ2's 19MP sensor lacks OIS, and pixel size isn't remarkably huge either. S9+ has OIS, larger pixel size AND a wider aperture. That helps it pull ahead of the XZ2 in low light.
And pls, before you say "but but XZ2 can take better shots with a tripod!!1!1", know that we're talking about phones here. We use them as point and shoot cameras. So handheld performance matters more.
Interested how the XZ2P will compare.

The XZ2 alone, with the same exact camera hardware as last year's Sony flagships (XZs as well), beats the S9+ in low light shooting.
With additional camera, the XZ2 Premium will blow the S9+ away and will put a serious competition to the current camera king; Huawei P20 Pro.

This phone lacks 3.5mm jack but it had a space.(so many devices are without 3.5 but they are lot thinner), Second, Sony lacks OIS, even chinese companies like Xiaomi , Zte etc are capable of puting that in their flagships.Third, I understad that sony loves old,sure,proved things... but if you change design,remove all the stuff that matters, change your UI a bit, why keep 16:9. Also Sony produces 90% of smartphone camera sensors but they cant put the best in their flagship? I dont get it... Overall this is a great device but for about 660$ it misses small things like : Amoled panel, OIS,18:9, bezelless design,a bit more premium look and bit more change over XZ2,3.5mm jack.4K 60fps , radio and probably that's it. i dont mind for most of it but other users does... all of that is small particular but together it makes huge degradation, but i agree that there are ppl who hates it but doesnt know why.. don't get me wrong, i didnt say dont buy it... but i will stand behind my words that there are better products for a price at least in my opinion. For me currently P20 pro is without competition now (it only lacks slightly stronger CPU) and i can't wait to see the answers from other companies becouse competition is always great for customers.

If sony make another box instead of this new soap , people would be yelling "WTH SAME DESIGN AGAINN ARGG BORING"
And so on. Same with another stuff like 16:9 screen and LCD Panels.
I think this is a really nice flagship. I am a Sony fan for s long time and this year I really appreciate this new design. I think it would fit the hand more than a boxy one. Camera is not a problem anymore , because your fingers will not block the camera while taking photos. And the fact that Sony's flagship is ip68 water and dust resistance certified means it's the second highest of all the phone (on par with Samsung's or LG's, the highest is ip69 sonim thing phones)This year it finally has wireless charging. And the fact that it is heavier means it's more likely to be durable than the lighter phones. As jerryrigeverything saids.
To Summerise , Sony XPERIA XZ2 Premium is a very good flagship , still had that uniqueness form Sony.
The only thing I dislike is it doesn't have a 3.5mm jack. That's it.
