What you choose is just a personal taste. The iPhone is unreasonable long so in the pocket it will not matter much which one you choose, you get a bigger display with higher resolution on the Xperia at just a few mm extra length, very good tradeoff.
iPhone is unsuitable for heavy callers, most higher end Android phones these days can double the 3G talk time, and the webbrowsing battery times are done with very low brightness, in fact everyone i know with iphones keep them at very low brightness due to the underwhelming battery size and they admit it cant last the day unless they keep on disabling connections and keeping low brightness which again means they cant use it outdoors in daylight.
Not that i expect Z1C to be a battery champ but at least a little better, and being standard micro usb port you can get powerbanks for less than $10, even at around $5-6, that does not happen with Apples lightning port.
By the way, the full review over at PA found that you cant set the Z1C to a very low brightness, it was 39 nits at minimum which is almost twice as much as Xperia Z (21). Hopefully will be fixed in a future update but for now it can be said to be a minor problem when using phone in very dark places. Compared to other phones its quite high, iPhone 5s has only 5 nits at minimum, Galaxy S4 more average with 9 but still thats more than 4 times less than Z1C.
Finally, iPhone has one big problem that is the main dealbreaker for many. Its possible to forgive the worst shortcomings, like the restrictions and limitations and the strict and annoying text input, but iTunes is much worse to accept, being dependent on PC connection with special software for simple tasks is not an option, too much to bear.

Beautiful and solid body, water- and dust-proof, bright sharp and scratch-resistant display, very powerful processor, good battery, more freedom and intuitive customisation with Android, loads of free useful apps VS with Apple most apps cost unreasonable money, expandable memory via MicroSD card VS Apple doesn't offer that, superb camera (proven by several reviews), nice in-call sound quality, more value for money (Sony £450 vs iPhone 5s £550) and in general Sony means unique, distinctive and classy. iPhones are everywhere these days. Why be like everybody else? Be unique. And you can trust Sony with quality, it's Japanese after all. Sony has made the perfect alternative to the iPhone ;)

iPhone 5s is lighter and I think the only reason for some people is that it uses iOS, you will need to pay more for any Apple product.

Obviously people who want big displays does not care about Z1 Compact, just like those who want reasonable sizes and and are able to see things on a normal size display arent considering buying phablets. If that does not make sense to you then we have established that the second alternative is most true in your case. Something very different that we do not want can never be better, if i say i have a girlfriend you cant come and tell me that a boyfriend is better.

The specs are exactly the same! Just lower pixel density! 342 conpared to 441 screen and 4.3 compared to a 5 inch display...
Battery life would be better on the Z1 compact because of its smaller screen...
So no big differences between the devices :)
