Weekly poll: Motorola Edge 30 Ultra tempts you with its 200MP camera, Fusion and Neo also want your attention

Motorola unleashed the first phone with a 200MP camera last week, the Edge 30 Ultra. For €900 this flagship offers a lot of bang for your buck, even besides the large 1/1.22” ultra high resolution sensor.

You get a curved 6.67” AMOLED display with 144Hz refresh rate and FHD+ resolution (it’s a 10-bit panel with HDR10+ support but relatively old Gorilla Glass 5). The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset (with 8/128GB base memory and options up to 12/512GB) and a 4,610mAh battery with 125W wired and 50W wireless charging.

Not that you will be taking many 200MP shots, this sensor is really intended to be used with 16-to-1 or 4-to-1 binning to get 12.5MP pictures (with 2.56µm effective pixels) or 50MP ones (1.28µm). The 50MP ultrawide camera also bins down to 12.5MP by default (4-to-1), the 60MP selfie camera offers binning as well.

The telephoto lens is the odd one out – a basic 12MP sensor behind a basic 2x lens. We suspect that we can get better 2x images out of the main camera, this one really should have been 3x at least. The telephoto camera deserves its own paragraph as it will come up when looking at the competition. The Edge 30 Ultra is also getting special treatment from Motorola and will receive 3 OS updates (it starts with Android 12, so it should go up to v15). This is also paired with 4 years of security patches (which will be released monthly).

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra can be found for just north of €1,000 (for an 8/128GB unit) and while its AMOLED display refreshes at “only” 120Hz, it is a more efficient LTPO panel. More importantly, it will receive 4 OS updates and has two telephoto cameras – one with a 3x lens and a periscope with 10x magnification. Now this gives you flagship zoom. The main camera isn’t bad either, a 108MP 1/1.33” sensor with 9-to-1 binning. The charging speed better not be mentioned, however.

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra will unfortunately not launch outside of China, so it is not a contender. The Xiaomi 12S Pro is expected to go global, however, and it should cost around the same as the non-S model - €900. This one has a 6.73” 120Hz LTPO panel and the SD 8+ Gen 1 chipset. For its cameras, Xiaomi went with a triple 50MP setup – 1/1.28” main, 2x telephoto and 115° ultra wide. This one can compete with the Motorola in terms of charging, its 4,600mAh battery can take in 120W over a wire (0-100% in 19 min) or 50W wirelessly (0-100% in 42 min).

An Asus ROG Phone 6 starts at €1,000, but this is for a 12/256GB unit. It runs on the 8+ Gen 1 chip, of course, with an upgraded cooling system. Its 6.78” AMOLED display beats even the Motorola with 165Hz refresh rate. The camera is fairly basic, 50+13+5MP, but it has a large 6,000mAh battery, which is decently fast to charge (60W, 0-100% in 42 minutes). You do get two USB-C ports too, which can be handy for accessories and just ergonomics. Like with the Motorola you get a mostly stock Android 12 without any promises of long term support.

The Motorola Edge 30 Fusion is a €600 take on a value for money phone. It also has a 144Hz OLED display, a 6.55” FHD+ panel, but uses the older Snapdragon 888+ chipset. Also, it doesn’t wow with its 50MP main camera (1/1.55”) or 13MP ultra wide (no tele), the 4,400mAh battery with 68W wired-only charging is good but not great (0-50% in 10 min). We have a full review if you want to know more. One thing to note is that there is a stylish vegan leather option, for those who carry their phones without a case.

The Fusion is going up against the likes of the Galaxy S21 FE (€500-600) with an 888 chipset and a 6.4” 120Hz AMOLED display. The 12MP main camera is unremarkable, but at least you get an 8MP 3x telephoto module. The 4,500mAh battery gets Samsung’s usual 25W charging system.

Alternatively, you can pick up a Realme GT2 for under €500. This one also has the 888 chip and a 6.62” 120Hz AMOLED display. You also get a 50MP main camera (1/1.56”), 8MP ultra wide and no telephoto. The 5,000mAh battery is on the level, though with 65W charging support (0-100% in 33 minutes).

For around €550 you can get a Poco F4 GT with the more powerful (if not more power efficient) Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. You also get treated to a 6.67” 120Hz AMOLED display and a 64+8+2MP camera setup. The 4,700mAh battery does 120W fast charging (0-100% in 17 minutes), if it had wireless charging, it could have challenged the Edge 30 Ultra.

Finally, there is the Motorola Edge 30 Neo, a smaller, cheaper model – it starts at €370. Its 6.28” OLED display drops down to 120Hz refresh rate and power comes from a mid-range Snapdragon 695 chipset and a 4,020mAh battery (68W fast charging). The camera setup is fairly standard, 64+13MP on the back, 32MP on the front.

Such smaller phones are tough to find. There is the Pixel 6a, for example, which has the same footprint and a 6.1” display. It uses the Google Tensor chipset and more importantly the Google image processing for the 12MP wide and ultra wide cameras. The battery is large (4,400mAh), but it doesn’t know the true meaning of fast charging (18W). Also, this one is pricier, but it can be found for €400 or so.

The Samsung Galaxy A53 is larger (6.5” display, nearly 7mm taller and 3.6mm wider, plus it weighs 34g more), but it is cheaper. The AMOLED display offers 120Hz refresh rate and inside there is an Exynos 1280 chipset. The camera setup is similar t o the Moto, 64+12MP (and a 5MP macro module and a 5MP depth sensor). The extra bulk comes with a larger battery, 5,000mAh, but as is typical for Samsung it only supports relatively low charging power, 25W.
