Weekly poll: what do you think about the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate?

Peter, 23 March 2025

The future or just a gimmick? The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is the first – and so far only – tri-foldable on the market. Others have shown prototypes, but Huawei is ahead of the curve on this one. Yes, the device itself is frighteningly expensive (€3,500!), but bleeding edge tech is always like that.

We have a detailed review of the XT Ultimate if you want to know more. Long story short, the device delivers what it promises – a state-of-the-art mechanical design, an immersive 10.2” display and an impressive camera system.

However, it is held back by the usual problems of current-day Huawei – the company is cut off from the global chip supply and from US-based services like Google Play. It’s a political issue rather than a technological one, but an issue nonetheless.

In terms of competition for the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate, there is none – this really is the only such device on the market. Compared to Huawei’s own Mate X6, the XT offers a 10.2” display unfolded in a body that folds down to 12.8mm and weighs 298g. The X6 is thinner and lighter at 9.9mm and 239g, but only has a 7.93” inner display with 36% smaller surface area.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 packs an even smaller 7.6” display inside a body that is 12.1mm thick and weighs 239g. The Z Fold Special is thinner at 10.6mm but only 3g lighter – this should be close to what we see from the upcoming Z Fold7.

Samsung is teasing a tri-fold device with a 9.96” internal display, but it’s not clear whether it will be widely available (rumors point to a limited production run).

The Oppo Find N5 is impressively slim at 8.9mm folded, but weight remains relatively high at 229g. This is with an 8.12” internal display. Looking at unfolded sections, Huawei managed to get the thinnest down to 3.6mm, while N5’s thinnest segment measures 4.2mm.

What do you think about the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate – would you like to own one or something like it?
