Anonymous, 31 Oct 2023I'm not even sure you read the post in its entirety be... moreFair point. In the end we can only speculate anyway, I'll just remain suspicious until those phones become as open and secure as a Pixels are currently. And I am indeed currently running GrapheneOS on my Pixel 8 Pro. The trade-off with this approach is the higher price despite inferior hardware, although the actual use/experience is pretty much flawless regardless, on top of top tier camera performance. Putting aside what someone might or might not intentionally put inside the OS or firmware, with the Pixel's (plus GOS) I can be fairly certain it's as secure as it gets currently (in the Android space anyway, but Apple's walled garden isn't for me). If Xiaomi ever starts releasing devices that catch the eye of the GOS developers, I'd have no reservations about them anymore. Do mind I don't really trust most other brands for the same issues. Especially not Samsung. With Xiaomi undercutting the prices this much, it just seemed a little extra weird. But again, all speculations until results follow.

I've got plenty mitigations to keep that data leakage within reason (GrapheneOS, plenty ad and tracker blocking across all my devices, reasonable privacy practices). I am also aware that the West isn't necessarily entirely honest about what they say about the East, but you can be certain that neither side is honest anyway. Your best bet is trusting community development in that aspect. All they gotta do is provide the same level of openness that Google provides with the Pixel series (but again, Google seems to be unique in that regard, which is ironic, given what they make money with normally). That would show that they can actually be trusted to leave us a choice.

Being a "real gamer" isn't determined by the platform you choose. Mobile games demand skill, strategy, and dedication, just like games on other platforms. Many mobile games have competitive scenes and dedicated player communities. The idea that a "real gamer" is confined to certain platforms is outdated and exclusionary. Gamers come in various forms, and what truly matters is the enjoyment and passion for gaming, regardless of the platform.

Ravenowl, 30 Oct 2023It's true that the actual cost to manufacture isn'... moreI'm not even sure you read the post in its entirety before replying. I didn't exclude the R&D point at all. I said that regardless of whatever R&D cost they incur developing the phone, they account for it when setting the price of their products and easily make back the money. I also said that Xiaomi has an advantage in R&D cost due to being based in China.

I don't know on what basis you claim that their software is stolen or "bought shadily" (whatever that means). Unfortunately your "best bet" isn't a reliable source.

Sure hardware needs software, but it's the same in the other direction; if your hardware sucks, there's only so much your software can do. I don't know exactly how much these companies spend on hardware development vs software development, but I don't think software is nearly as costly as hardware. Developing chips for the cutting edge is extremely costly. We are talking 10+ million for the masks before you even produce a single chip. And if you find a crucial bug after sending the design to the fab, you incur that cost again. Intel, for example, goes through over 10 of these re-spins for a single generation. Even if the company doesn't design the chips themselves, it is reflected in the cost of the chips. With software, you can release with little cost relative to development costs, and any bugs can be fixed for relatively little. If nothing else, you can see the cost of hardware development from the barrier of entry. You can start a software company tomorrow if you wanted, but a hardware company is going nowhere without massive capital, investors, or government support.

I think Xiaomi do want to have good products, and for all markets. For example, they recognize that Westerners really don't like ads and so global ROMs don't have all the ads they put on China ROMs. Unlike some other companies, Xiaomi does allow you to access the bootloader and flash the ROM, and they even have tools to help you do so. Creating your own ROMs for it is another story though. It wont be easy but if someone has the right skills and really wanted to, they probably could. But if privacy is your top priority, then perhaps running GrapheneOS on a Pixel is best for you. There is always the security vs convenience tradeoff and not everyone feels the same about it.

Keep in mind that despite all the US claims that Chinese products (like Huawei's) pose a security threat, they have provided no evidence of it. In fact, contrary to these claims, there are countries that have publicly stated that Huawei products do not pose a security threat. The real threat these Chinese companies pose to the West is to their monopolies.

As for what happened in Mexico with Samsung and others disabling the phone remotely, Xiaomi actually had the most reasonable response and sent out a message to their users in Mexico while not locking their devices.

dissapointed they keep using tall 20:9 display ratio..hope the xiaomi 14 ultra would use 19.5:9 or lower like samsung and iphone..

Let's be real, mate. Everyone nowadays collect your data. Even if you don't consider from which manufacturers your phone is, Google is collecting your data. Social media apps collect your data. etc.
You just choose what companies that you're willing to submit your data.

And while it's true that China is "mandating" to collect data, it's mostly for its citizens. That's why phone companies from China using ROM that vastly different from international version.
And for Chinese app? Well, there's a bunch of alternatives. Just search on Play Store.
