Chris didn't provide usage specifics on how he tested the phones though. For me it's enough to know the Mi Max 3 and Honor Note 10 are in the same tier in terms of battery life.

When I got 1st gen. Mi Max i got one with a un-official global ROM and hence no OTA etc. All I had to do to get the Chinese ROM was to download Xiaomis software (MI PC Suite) on my PC, connect my phone and it detected it and flashed over the vendor ROM. Then all I had to do was to add Google apps myself. No unlocking bootloader or anything like that. Did you try this option first?

Dan, 20 Aug 2018Frankie Tech did another battery drain test between Mi Max ... moreTechtablets test was standarized for actual brightness (he set 200 nites output on both screens). Frankie just set slider on 50% on both phones, so he did it wrong again. I guess he has no way to measure brightness objectively.

Still, now there is no doubt that Mi Max 3 has superior battery.

Frankie Tech did another battery drain test between Mi Max 3 and Honor Note 10, this time at 50% brightness. Mi Max 3 pulls out a marginal win.

I have managed to get my Mi Max 3 working in the UK.

Most sellers are loading "Official Global ROM", there is no official Global ROM yet. Its something cooked up to make early sales and it is horribly broken (poor signal and you cannot make calls).  Also you will never be able to get official OTA updates with that ROM.
In fact there are four ROMs floating around:

                    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcIH_AMp2_I

The real Global ROM will be released soon.
                    http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=3558353&highlight=mi%2Bmax%2B3
Until then you need to change to the only official Chinese ROM available:

                    Download Fastboot : ROM MIUI 9 China Stable ROM V9.6.9.0.OEDCNFD (2.7 GB)http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=3513911&highlight=mi%2Bmax%2B3
                    http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=3513911&highlight=mi%2Bmax%2B3
                    Firmware

You will need to follow the instructions for Fastboot.

“MAKE SURE THAT YOUR BOOTLOADER IS UNLOCKED BEFORE DOING THIS OR YOU WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE
Fastboot roms are flashed through a special tool by xiaomi which can be found: here
You also might need adb drivers which are found: here
                    1. Open the drivers file and click "y" for every option that it asks for.
                    1. Install the fastboot tool tool
                    2. Download the fastboot rom that you wanna flash
                    3. Unzip the rom to a folder on your pc
                    4. Open the tool and in bottom right corner there will be 3 options, select "clean all"
                    5. Click on the "select" button on top left corner and head to the folder that you unziped, select it.
                    6. On your device enable "USB debugging", "install via USB", "USB Debugging (security settings)", and disable "verify apps over USB" (Developers options are enabled by going to "about phone" then spam clicking the "MIUI version" until it says that your are a developer. then go to "additional setting" and you will find "developer options")
                    7. Boot your device to fastboot mode by holding down the vol- + power key together until you see a bunny with fastboot sign.
                    8. Connect your device to your PC and click the "refresh" button on top right corner. (your phone should now appear in the list)
                    9. Click "flash" and wait until your device boots to the MI logo and 3 dots. (DONT DISCONNECT YOUR DEVICE BEFORE THAT!!!)
                    10. Wait for your device to boot up
                    11. Enjoy!

                    https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-max-3/how-to/news-mi-max-3-global-rom-t3825700

After updating the phone will take up to 10 mins to repartition encrypt etc.

Next you need to set the language to say English and install Google Play
                    https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/how-to/mobile-phone/install-google-play-xiaomi-3676150/

Then you need to install Google keyboard Gboard.

Finally get the latest MIUI version 9.6.11.0 OEDCNFD (Settings → MIUI version -> Update)

Avoid this phone if you live in the UK.

RF performance is very poor on both 2G and 3G bands.

                                    You cannot make calls!

                                    LTE/Wifi works fine.

Frequencies are compatible with UK networks but these phones cannot handle medium/low signal strength.

Tested on O2, EE and Vodafone at multiple locations (tried all the different bands/protocols too).

Using the same test SIM cards my iPhone 8, Xperia and S7 and Note 2 can all make/receive calls, Xiaomi fails every time.

Even in the middle of London with good signal stregth Xiaomi cannot make calls while other phone have no issues!
