How do I prevent phone to close locked background ... moreFinally, another user has found out about one of the most annoying if not THE MOST ANNOYING MIUI/Xiaomi phone 'feature': Aggressive battery handling that kills apps regularly even those that are meant to continuously remain running in the background (clock widgets, calendar widgets, news widgets, screen overlays like custom navigation buttons, custom gestures, etc.)

Phones from Samsung, Google, LG, Android One phones and other phones with near stock android skins NEVER have this problem. You don't need to do anything; you don't need to set any special settings to prevent the apps meant to run in the background to get continuously killed/stopped/closed/disabled by the OS. Not so with MIUI based Xiaomi phones. MIUI likes to kill apps and it gets really irritating and infuriating because it just keeps on doing so repeatedly. MIUI is so aggressive and dumb. While with other phones above you don't need to do anything to prevent background apps from closing/stopping, with MIUI/Xiaomi phones, you need to do AT LEAST THESE 3 things to prevent MIUI from killing/closing/stopping/disabling updates of the background app:

1. Lock the app in recents (padlock icon) to prevent the app from being closed when you clear all recents. Long press on the app icon in recents and when you see a padlock icon, tap on it to ensure its in 'locked' position (closed, not open padlock icon). Even with the 'closed padlock' setting, it won't guarantee the background app won't be closed. Be sure not to swipe out 'locked' apps (with padlock icon) in recents. Even if they're locked, swiping them out in recents will close them. Just use 'X' to clear all apps. The locked apps (with padlock icon) which will remain in recents/memory.

2. The same apps you can see in 'recents' with the padlock icon, you also need to set them so that they are enabled to 'autostart'. Go to settings - apps - manage apps. Tap 'permissions'. Select 'Autostart'. Be sure the apps you want protected from MIUI's killing spree has the 'Autostart' toggle switch enabled. Doing so will ensure the app will autostart upon reboot of the phone or in case MIUI kills/disables them.

3. Lastly, be sure the apps you want to remain in memory have their 'app battery saver' set with 'No restrictions'. To check and change each app's battery saver settings, go to Settings - Battery & performance - App battery saver. Tap on the 3 dots at the upper right corner, then tap 'Sort by app settings'. Tap an app on the list to change its background settings. Apps you want to remain running in the background to prevent MIUI from killing them should be set to have 'No restrictions'. Apps you don't need to run 'dormant' in the background can be set under 'Battery saver'. Apps that you want notifications regularly delivered without delay should be set to 'No restrictions'. Apps that you don't need real time notification updates can be set to 'Restrict background apps' or 'Restrict background activity'. Remember, setting apps in 'Battery saver' means MIUI will suspend their activity as soon as they are in the background (you're not actively using or tapping them).

Oh, one more thing: Restoring backup layouts of your launchers (ex. restoring from a Nova launcher backup) will remove the 'Accessibility settings' permission. You'll need to kill the app first (force stop), clear recents and enable again 'accesibility' permission of the app under 'More download services'. It's the only way to restore 'accessibility' permission (necessary if you enabled select custom gestures like 'display recent apps' with a user defined gesture).

Given that recents will now be filled with apps that are padlocked because you want to protect them from MIUI's killing spree, how then do you make them 'disappear' from recents view without killing them? It's another one of MIUI's eccentricities: You actually swipe them out in recents without changing their protected status (still with padlock). Reboot your Xiaomi phone after swiping all of them out in recents. After reboot, they should all 'autostart' (if you set them to 'autostart' [#2]) and they will still be protected apps (padlock icon) running in the background. However, you will no longer see them in recents, but still, they are there, running in the background because you set them as protected apps.

After all the convoluted settings above, there are still situations where one app can edge out another app that's meant to run in the background causing the edged out app to stop running/stop updating. In this case, just tap on the app in question to allow it to re-run in the background. Be sure to limit apps running in the background to those that you truly want to. Otherwise, with limited RAM and too many apps set to run in the background, you still risk background apps from getting suspended/killed by MIUI.

Hello, I have a confusion on whether to buy the F2 Pro or OnePlus Nord. I understand F2 Pro is a flagship device and Nord isn't. But there are certain features that are cut out on both devices, like the factors mentioned;

*Design: F2 Pro had an Aluminium Frame while Nord is Plastic with no 3.5mm jack too.

*Display: Nord has a 90Hz AMOLED display while F2 Pro is 60Hz.

*Processor: F2 Pro has a SD 865 (UFS 3.1) while Nord has a 765G (UFS 2.1).

*Battery: F2 Pro has a 4700mAh (Quick Charge 4+ and USB Power Delivery 3.0) while Nord is with 4115mAh.

When I consider gaming, F2 Pro is the better choice but I'm afraid I'll miss the 90Hz smoothness. I don't want to go for LCD too. Can anyone recommend which I should go with according to my factors?

Concerned consumer, 10 Oct 2020I've been looking around too. When it comes to gaming ... moreFor gaming, 1st priority only check for high end SD800 series processor, then only look for screen, touch sampling, battery life.
The 90hz, 120hz, 144hz on smartphone still is gimmick as what you said, high demanding 3D games struggle to run at 60fps, taxing on GPU mostly, also CPU to render high refresh rate.
If what he want is a budget gaming phone, I would suggest if he can find, get Poco F2 Pro and seal the deal.
Anything other than SD865 such SD765 is far less powerful, or should even settle for SD855 or 855+ instead.

TerrFX, 10 Oct 2020I'm tryna buy a phone in this price range, and I mostl... moreI've been looking around too. When it comes to gaming I've found that Snapdragon phones are best for less. Some of the high end kirin, mediatek, and exynos phones with their mali gpus could do it. But they don't perform as well with snap chips on the same class. Even this phone's 865 Snapdragon (which is only beat by the 865+) struggles to hit above 60fps in most games. The high framerate will mostly be utilized in UI when scrolling. So for the price, poco f2 pro/redmi k30 pro can't really be beat.

If you're looking for something pricier and check more boxes, the realme x50 pro or the oneplus 8 would be your best bet. If you want to save and game the vivo x50 and one plus nord has a 90Hz display and a formidable snap 765G.

Special mentions:

poco x3; super cheap, huge battery, 144hz*, above average snap 732G.

Huawei nova 7; well-priced, kirin 985G, best mali class gpu(mali g77). Even the huawei p40 with its kirin 990 has the mali g76.

You could always buy expensive to secure a good gaming experience. Anything above 700 usd should get you what you want. But you sound like you have a budget. You can never go wrong with the older gen 845 and 855 snapdragon. Their 630 and 640 adrenos can still compete with current gen mali g77.

Again to emphasize, games rarely go above 60fps even on the top-end snapdragons. So if gaming is what you want, look at cpu/gpu, battery cap, screen quality i.e. colour (OLED and above), new tech e.g. LPDDR5 and ufs 3.0 that lower battery consumption.

I'm tryna buy a phone in this price range, and I mostly game. I wanted to buy this at first but it does lack the high refresh rate. I considered Realme x2 pro but it's design and battery life isn't the best. I also considered blackshark 2 and k20 pro but they are kind of hard to find and the prices between these phones are really small, any suggestions?

NoName, 08 Oct 2020Anyone have an issue of connection when playing heavy games... moreYou can force 'LTE only' in the hidden settings under 'Phone Info'. How to get to hidden setting 'Phone Info' and create a shortcut to this very useful hidden setting:

Install Nova launcher. Make it the default launcher.
On the home screen (of Nova launcher), long press and tap 'Widgets'. Long press 'Activities' then release to add a shortcut on the Nova launcher home screen.

Scroll down to 'Settings' (there are two: tap the second one with the higher number - 285).

Scroll down again and tap 'Phone info (.Radio info)'.
You now have the shortcut to the hidden settings 'Phone Info'.

In 'Phone Info', in 'Select phone index', 'Phone 0' refers to SIM1 and 'Phone 1' refers to SIM2. Choose the correct SIM which you want to force 'LTE/4G only'.

In the 'Set Preferred Network Type', write down on paper the default chosen network (in case you want to get back to it). Anyway, choose 'LTE only' in 'Set Preferred Network Type' if you want your Poco F2 Pro to stick to 'LTE only' and not auto switch to other network types (Ex. H+/WCDMA/3G). It will nail the signal to 'LTE only'. Be warned you cannot send or receive regular voice calls on the SIM where you forced this 'LTE only' setting so I suggest having a data only SIM in SIM1 slot and your voice calls on SIM2 slot so network changes to your data SIM (SIM1/Phone 0) won't affect your ability to send or receive voice calls on your voice call and text SIM (SIM2/Phone 1).

If you use only one SIM card, you're out of lock. You have to change back to the default settings that you wrote down on paper above so you can receive phone calls while online gaming.

Turn on toggle for 'show buttons', 'wide', and 'macro' so you can just tap on the buttons to shift/change cameras/lenses. When changing caneras/lenses, be sure to tap Night Sight again because after switching (Ex. Wide to Ultrawide to Macro), GCam defaults to regular 'camera' mode rather than Night Sight.

Always use Night Sight for wide, macro and when using digital zoom (pinch out gesture), even during day time if you want the best details and best photo quality overall (will take a bit longer but it's worth it).

There's no HDR off, HDR+, or HDR+ enhanced toggle when in Night Sight mode for GCam. If light levels are sufficient and the scene has high dynamic range, switch to regular 'camera' mode on the GCam port and choose HDR off, HDR+ or HDR+ enhanced for scenes with wide dynamic range. HDR+ enhanced can look surreal/overcooked looking on people's faces/human subjects so you may reduce it using HDR+ or turn off HDR altogether using the toggle.

If you are shooting high dynamic range landscapes however, leave the toggle at HDR+ or HDR+ enhanced. It beats the default camera app every single time for challenging high dynamic range scenes (back lit subjects with the sun behind them, Christmas lanterns, street lights and other night lights/night architecture photography). HDR+/HDR+ enhanced helps capture the scenery without heavy highlight and shadow clipping.

I also use Night Sight on day time if I want to use digital zoom or I want the best detail retention, highest dynamic range and better overall image quality at 100% crop. Using Night Sight on day time in the GCam beats even the Poco F2 Pro's default camera output in color, detail retention, exposure, noise and overall quality even if you use the 64 megapixel mode and despite the GCam with night Sight port limited to only to 16.1 megapixels.

Anyone having issues on lock screen wallpapers being blurry at midnight to dawn time? I tried changing wallpapers and themes but still blurry. Also I tried reporting it and getting a screenshot of the blurred lockscreen but the screenshot was clear and hd. Maybe this is a bug after updating to miui 12?
