Mediatek chips starting from the Helios X10 had always scored less on synthetic benchmarks than its snapdragon counterparts. And even if it scored more, the poor 3D graphics benchmarks from the horrible GPU would hinder the performance. For example, X20 scored much higher in Antutu than the SD625. but the 625 is so much better in performance and general smoothness.
Now it's not the case anymore though.

The Snapdragon 810 is very notorious, Mediatek chip is fine now as G90T on Redmi 8 Pro does a great job with a lot of praises from many youtube reviewers.

It's just that back then the majority treated mediatek as inferior to all other chips. It's funny how people's perception changed so drastically.
