A healthy human eye, say 20/20 vision, can see up to 477ppi at 12" away.
A healthy pairpair of eyes can well exceed 20/20 vision though, i.e. to bring it to an extreme, pro baseball players have tested up to 20/8 vision. If you factor that in, it would bring the ppi up to 718 at 12" away.
Distance is key, I'd say 3840x2160 screen could work for a 6"+ smartphone. I'd also expect a 6"+ smartphone to house a rather large battery.
Although 4K content is another story. I'm not saying I agree with 4K for a smartphone for now, but ideal ppi to be truly retina @ 12" away with 20/8 eyes is about 718ppi.
I'd expect 4k phablets, 4k tablets, and for tablet to venture into 8K in the next few years.

I NEED 4k movies and 4k screens and then I'd have my portable cinema, no need ever to pay again for imax because 4k VR is better than any cinema experience...
So yeah, can't wait.

Who knows, maybe Samsung is secretly working on a GPU able to handle 4K. Maybe they plan to officially announce that kind of GPU together with the announcement of the Note 5 xD

Anything more than that will look the same (because u can't see individual pixels). It will only drain resources, increase cost thus negatively affecting the performance. It's a phone & there should be a balance in everything. Bigger isn't always better. It may be a extremely sophisticated engineering but poorly acceptable from the user's side.

Hmm... Like I mentioned, for people who has some pleasureable hobby (or some nasty psychotic habit) of zooming their high resolution photos all day long or, say, advanced or professional photo editors. I guess I am just one of those who loves to watch how these companies market techs like these and see if the techs hit or miss.
Since this is yet a rumor of a phone and there has yet a 4K phone to be outed, I believe no one atm can certify how this rumored phone be critically received in the future (or near future). BTW, Sharp gets to ready their 4K smartphone by 2016. I have to partially agree, however, that these screen resolutions are suitable for larger screens such as in tablets. I guess manufacturers could keep 4K to 6" screens and above but since as of the moment it seems consumers consider 6" to be the maximum screen size for phones. I opine, it would be less likely that companies would be producing 4Ks on phones below 6 inches of screen. But if in the future (or near future) 4K displays on phones get well recieved, there could be a trend in filling the gap of 6.01-6.99" phones/tablets/phablets sporting 4K and more 4K tablets of 7"+ screen size.
And as I have previously stated, in digital television and digital cinematography, 4K and 8K is old tech news. With sufficient resource, funds, etc. (and public support, I guess), these mobile companies could even probably skip 4K for 8K. Whichever the case, I would say, they should keep these resolution race coming or, at most, until 16K which is the likely successor to 4K UHD and 8K UHD/FUHD whether on phones or tablets. Oh, I could just imagine the influx of cheap 1080p phones on low end or midrange phones by then just as how 720p phones are currently oversaturating low end and midrange phones (especially Chinese branded models) because 2K display phones gained abundant traction on flagships. We could trace it all back to thank the first generation of Moto G as one of the influences, if not origins, for cheap 720p phones on product launch.
But I still like the day I can purchase newly launched 1080p phones (with whatever the latest OS version would be) under low end category with cheap pricing to come the soonest possible :-)
