Helio X20 doesn't overheat, CPU enters octa-core Cortex-A53 mode past a certain temperature

I'm using X20 on xiaomi phone, and :
1- doesn't overheat.
2- doesn't shut cores while I'm gaming and benchmarking at the maximum stress
3- I don't notice any performance loss at least with X20 base model, don't know about X25
Since my experience with mediatek, their base SoC are good, but the turbo/top ones just sucks, avoid use X25......

I use a device running on the heliox20.It does not overheat.

Pure semantics. Of course something won't overheat if you turn it off before it does thermal damage. Turning off the 72s will result in the loss of a lot of performance.

I hope that the Helio x20 chipset performs good and without the overheat issue. Because I am interested in one smartphone with Helio x20 SoC.

LostInTheSorrow, 04 Feb 2016I don't consider Mediatek chipsets completely useless as mo... morei think mediatek still good for casual user as the price is cheaper, im currently using device with helio x10, and only play average games such as clash of clans. no problem at all. another thing i like about helio is they support clearmotion on hw capable video player such as mx player. watching anime (LOL) or whatever videos at 60fps is really cool.

well they denied overheating issues on 810 also, at first. Then later when there was too much evidence, they addmited it overheats. No way anybody with any brain would put this chip in their phone, and anybody with any brain would buy a phone with this chip

sad for this promissing processor im not a fan of mediatek but looks good for horse power.... i think that this processor overheat because makes no sense turn off the couple of cortex 72 during a task if no overheatiung sings ist it.... for me it does because running 10 cores is a heavy task for such reduced space .... so expect this phone to be insted helio x-10 v2........ qualcomm did a good choice only putting 4 A72 cores because system only needs one for smooth experience and other task enable the ones on deman ... reminds me krait processor.

It was after extensive testing, so it was with some basis (not a baseless one, I suppose). There are 2 possibilities for Helio X20 heating:
One - It is manufactured using 20nm process, against 16nm process for Kirin 950.
Second - Mediatek is incompetent in making efficient chipsets
I don't know which one of the above is the real cause, I am alluding to second one though. I will accept the first one as reason if Qualcomm mucks up with SD 652 or SD 650. If they are damn good as expected, then the second one could be the only reason.

Clearly it does overheat, which is why it has to shut down. The shut down is obvisous to prevent it from burning through your pocket.
The key is, can it run high intensity games at full settings for long periods without shutting down to the lower spec cores?

Off-screen tests though, I'm sure will show that the T760MP6 is faster than the Adreno 330 (and more in line with the Adreno 420 in performance).

I don't consider Mediatek chipsets completely useless as most of people do, I'd even think about buying a phone with such chipset but one thing which would definitely hold me at the moment is weak GPUs (PowerVR). A terrible experience. I've watched some videos of real-time usage, it was as bad as benchmarking results.

Check out anandtech review for the Mate 8 review. The Kirin 950 quad core was thermally tested and the A72 NEVER throttles.
Mean while Mediatek has only dual core A72 and they are already admitting it throttles. The chip will definitely have heat issues.
