Nokia 3310 arrival in United States trumped by carriers

The smartphones of today are made to be garbage in a few years. The original 3310 can withstand the test of time. Many 17-year old 3310's still function today. Removable battery, microSD slot, FM radio, and 3.5mm headphone jack. Many current phones no longer have ALL that.

I believe its not that the 900Mhz band is not used in the US but that it is already in use - perhaps by the military.

Thats the first thing I could not understand about this phone. How come it has a dual band radio? I was sure it was a mistake. Even many phones in 2000 had tri or quad band radios. I believe the bigger problem is 1800mhz/1900mhz on 2g difference which is city coverage.

This will never happen. Ever.
The efficiency of 2G service is low compared to the efficiency of LTE. Check out the Wikipedia article on "Spectral Efficiency".
The carriers can get 0.52 bits per second per hertz of spectrum using 2G. They can get 4.08 bits per second per hertz using LTE. Carriers get most of their income from selling data bits, so they want all the efficiency they can find.
AT&T disconnected their 2G service on the 1st of the year. T-Mobile intends to shut theirs down in 2020. And now we are going to bring it back?

If they change their mind and swap the 2G with 3G and internet sharing capability by adding its facilities, change the battery with bigger one, no matter how bulky the phone will become, this 3310 will definitely set a record in sale, globally.

it was a Nokia that was pumping out the same design over and over again at different
price points running really really bad software by Microsoft never going anywhere.

We won't truly see this 3310's true worth in durability until years later. Right now, it is a 3310 in name only.

Original 3310 looked soo cool. And then this. They should have worked from outside. they should have first brought some artist and designers to make a "modern-retro" look which should be easily recognized as 3310 successor (this one can also be easily recognized as a 3310 successor, but it is not a pretty sight for sure). this design should have a design with "details" as opposed to the overly minimal design of current slabs. The design details. Vents, holes etc.

they could have gotten away with adding $10 to the price and adding a quad or penta band radio, even just giving a 3G radio, so it could be used on carriers which don't support 2G bands.

J... morelumia devices in their entirety were poor at the least, especially for the older ones, you couldn't transfer anything from contacts to pictures from a lumia phone to android, iOS (obviously that's apple's fault too here) and sometimes even other lumias, to say they were bad is wrong, but to say they were good is also pretty inaccurate, no innovation came from them in the mobile world, you don't even see microsoft pushing that hard for them anymore. And the app store, it was like looking at a December catalogue in September, most app developers (even some big apps too) gave up with lumia, so are they really that good?

Selling re-hashed outdated 2G phones just as many countries are shutting their 2G networks. That sounds like a good business idea! What next? Will they be making analogue TV's for all the European countries that turned off all the analogue transmitters a few years back? Never mind, they look so retro! Still no sign of a flagship of course. Sadly while HMD might use the Nokia brand name they are not the Nokia we used to know and love and seem utterly clueless. At this rate perhaps they should bring back Elop. He couldn't do much worse!
