Android is terrible, i've tried using it so many times and its just awkward, my iPhone 3G, 4 and now 4S are far superior to anything ive used with Android on it!!! and as for the Android Market...

Apple and Microsoft are so afraid with Android and device manufacture growth in market share and user's demand. this is about money gain for Apple and Microsoft that can't win, so they do patent lawsuit infringments.... sorry for my english.

While similar in principle, the slight differences are probably what led to Apple receiving the patent (finger as opposed to stylus), (straight line vs writing letters), up and down, vs left to right).
In essence, it is both a big deal and not so big a deal. Apple is protecting its way of unlocking, leaving so many other ways for other manufacturers, which I also believe has led to the innovative Facial Recognition unlock on Galaxy Nexus, also don't forget the fingerprint unlock we have seen on other devices.
Wonder what reaction will be when Google gets patent for the facial unlock. Somehow I doubt it will be "Oohhh my godd! this is so abusive! They are bullies" yada yada yada.

Wonderful! Another brain dead patent awarded to the "iCopy but sell it as mine" company that, of course, will now sue the whole world just to have its fanboys flame the internet with their mumbo-jumbo.
A stupid patent is still a stupid patent. Shame on USPTO for giving weapons to patent trolls such as Crapple lawyers. The Sweden company did correctly not file the patent because in EU (that is much more better than US in this) patents can't be issued on software implementation. Patents should protect technologies not ideas. Protecting ideas is foul because it kills innovation (all the idiotic patent wars going on are a good example) and the risk of awarding a generic patent as this one is too high. Sorry for Crapple fanboys but if the patent is on the idea, once the idea is used on another product before the patent is filed, it can't be patented (otherwise someone could patent the "push a button" thing and rightfully sue the whole world). If the patent is on the process itself, the patent filed by Crapple is way too generic and should be rejected anyway.
It's just a sloppy USPTO job (or maybe is just an too-good-to-be-true timing for awarding it given the war raging worldwide). Who knows?

But if that's not close enough for you, the BACKLIGHT on the same device (a Palm clone called Clie SL20) could be turned on and off EXACTLY like that: swiping up or down across the screen. Prior art, anyone...?
So yes, it is THAT obvious, and almost unavoidable as long as the operation is performed on a touchscreen alone.

But that also the case in one of our traditional food in Indonesia named "Tempe" which made from soybeans. We already made and consume it for decades, and the Japanesse is the one who got the patent. So I guess it's not about who doing it first. It's all about who patent it first. And patent won't be granted if it's the only way to execute the need (like walking/driving/flying in pedestrian/street/sky example from someone).

Apple seems to be run by a load of tools with small tackle these days! I'm not sure who started the whole APPLE/SAMSUNG thing off but when will these guys understand. If we like OSx we buy that, if we like Android we buy that, if we like WP7 we buy that... Why can't they all just get on with what they think looks nice and works well and let everyone else get on with everything else!
