Apple granted 'slide to unlock' patent for touchscreen devices

26 October, 2011
This could mean more legal trouble for Android OEMs and Android itself if Apple decides to take legal action.

To all the smartasses that defend Apple by "Doesn't matter if Neonode was first, they didn't register it as patent" Who think that if they file a shit patent it's okay. Well then, check this out.

What if I file a Patent on how the user is pulling down the door handle, to open a door. It doesn't matter that it's known for ages, did someone file a patent? Nope, then it's okay right? And I'll sue all the world and will be the jackass of the universe. It's fine right? You guys could do that too, I was faster, I'm excused. Right? NO I would be the king of jackasses sharing the title with Apple :)

This should be for US only, as Europe for example there are no software patents.

So much hue and cry over a patent secured by Apple for which they had filed long time ago from Android fans... Whats up??? Getting afraid??? Dont be because they surely will be able to find other ways to unlock a phone...

Surely all android unlock mechanisms are affected, not just those moving along a predefined path (note "and/or" from the quote).

"moving the unlock image to a predefined location and/or moving the unlock image along a predefined path"

All android unlock screens move an image from one place to another including Ice Cream Sandwich.

Ok, so when i use MIUI (which is free) on a HTC device (Desire HD) which i legally bought, then i choose a THEME than replicates the iPhone unlock screen, will Apple sue me for patent breaking? And then, is 20sec i change the unlock screen to 5-way unlock screen which is also available in MIUI as a THEME, and i have no patent breaking gesture screen...

Come on guys, Apple is smart and big, but the world is always smarter and bigger :) You can fight but you can not win for sure..

It is crazy a patent could be granted for this. Replace "unlock" with a generic action, and this is merely the way touch screen devices work. There is no way they could have got a patent for such an action which toggles a variable or draws a character, either of which inputs could be used to "unlock" a device.

Regarding the slide to unlock feature - it was Apple's invention and Android just thought, hm, that's a great idea!
They copied it, and OK, they improved it a bit, but it's clear enough that this idea was copied from Apple iPhone.
