Samsung Galaxy Note plagued by display issues

12 July, 2012
The issue consists of black clipping and banding in images and videos which have dark shadows.

Mine's affected. It doesn't display the full range of grays, instead of gradual degradation of tones, it cuts off at some point and just renders black for colors that are supposed to be dark gray. The effect is just horrifying.

The problem is that Samsung has refused to acknowledge this issue and has not committed to any kind of fix. Even replacement units exhibit the same issue.

This is a global issue, i got mine in the Philippines and other owners from this country also have this issue. I know not all units are affected but Samsung has sold over 7 million of these things and 1% of that is 70,000 - let's say the defect rate is just 1% - that's still a lot.

Samsung NEEDS to step up, acknowledge the issue, own it, and FIX IT.

Strange, i never had any problems like this with my European Galaxy Note. The problem might be affecting US Notes only? As they are physically different from European ones.

Anonymous, 12 Jul 2012oh no.. i was planning to buy this phone right this weekend... moreI really don't understand why you should not buy a Galaxy Note. Gradation of colors might be an issue but it is a very minor problem which can be fixed using a custom kernel or a future software update.
Coming to Galaxy S3, I can confirm that this is non-existent on S3's display. :)

I don't have such an issue with my note... never did!
It came with 2.3.6 GB ... I recently upgraded it to ICS 4.0.3
no issues at all... I'll be downloading the 4.0.4 later this week
                        Amazing phone!

I always had this issue on my Nokia C7. This is a consistent problem in Nokia AMOLED screens. However, this wasn't there in my Galaxy S, Galaxy S II or my current Galaxy S III. According to what I've seen, I've not noticed this in HTC One S or HTC Desire. Don't know why Galaxy Note has this issue. According to me, this really is a software issue and not really a display issue. However, why such things never happen on a non-AMOLED displays. :/

Well i tried what was instructed in the xda forum. But isnt it true for all amoled screens? I looked at a friend's galaxy nexus, gradation of colora not really smooth. But it is not a major issue for me.
