This is simply caused by manufacturers like Motorola refusing to update their Android devices with new versions of the OS.

The problem with updates is that users have to wait for the mobile carriers and handset manufacturers to release them. Because they are slow (Motorola) at releasing updates then the figures you have shown are not worth the page they are printed on as I'm sure all your readers would agree that if they could upgrade they would!!!

Anonymous, 02 Oct 2012Regarding this article: So what.I agree with you. Not much 'meat' on this story...

The surprising thing (if any) as I see it is that still slightly more than 1 of 6 androids are on "Froyo or older" (16.8%). I guess this means that the phones last 'long'. Most likely with a new owner rather than being binned when people upgrade their phones.

with the launch of WP8 end october i guess the growth of android smartphones will slow down even more.

fragmentation! Fragmentation!.. Its such a huge gap between phone vendors and Google. No future-proof phones. Smartphone vendors just cant anticipate the requirements for future android OS. Hope this is not the case with Google-owned Motorola anymore! Hope there are finally future-OS compatible phones (much like apple's iphone.. the freakin 3Gs supports IOS 6)

Gingerbread is like Windows XP of mobile phones. Still lives even after so many years.

Makes sense. Gingerbread was like a "critical update", because Froyo was so slow and buggy and weird. I know of Gingerbread users who dont want to upgrade to ICS even if its officially available from the manufacturer of their phone. Because Gingerbread works, dont need to fix if it aint broken.

                                    Gingerbread is a required upgrade.
                                    ICS is optional.

Well considering this report can it be concluded that there are fewer high end android devices running ICS/Jb then Iphones running IOS6?
