How does Google find a way to screw up something like this?

Google started out well, with the Android Market app (predecessor of Play Store for those who don't remember) giving you a clear list of all permissions before you installed the app. Then over time they've been more and more focussed on "reducing friction" as the jargon knows, i.e. making it easier to be completely unaware of what an app has access to.

This sounds like yet another step in the same direction. It's almost as if they don't want people to think about surveillance capitalism for some reason...

While this move is a little bit disappointing, apps still will ask for permissions before they actually used - so no real danger to privacy.

If I don't know the app/developer and I see no description (why app needs/requests specific permission) - I skip the app, so simple.

I do care about app permissions. I've had Pixel phones for over 5 years now and I have opted for them rather than others because among other things, of the flexibility to remove pre-installed apps. I've also enjoyed being able to go to the Apps section and turn on or turn off certain access permissions. But the data permissions in the play store is different - it's just telling us what an app developer might do with my data once it receives it. I'd prefer to be able to toggle permissions on or off just like I do with access to my location or camera. Over the years, I've noticed that features I like most on my Pixel phones keep getting buried deeper and deeper within the system and I have to take more time to navigate to those features to use them. This change seems consistent with that evolution where Google is now letting developers do more and more with my data but both making me rely on the developer to tell me the truth and making it harder for me to see what the developer SAYS it is doing with my data. This should all be getting easier, not more difficult, for the end user. Data security is at the top of my list. I get an unbelievable amount of spam and phishing attacks and my phone is under constant threat of calls from scammers. How can I minimize all of that if I have to trust that apps on my phone aren't passing my email address and phone numbers and locations on to anyone who will pay for that data?

'might'? This has been the case for months now.

UsmanHSh, 17 Jul 2022Even SD cards can die.Well of course. But over the course of using different kinds of flash storages (USB flash drive, memory cards, SSD drive, NVME), only memory cards never dies on me while other types can suddenly failing. Even a 32MB sd card from my old Nokia 3660 still works. eMMC and UFS storage inside a phone nowadays may be quite reliable, but it means nothing if we cannot retreive the data because for example the phone physically broke into two pieces somehow, or got into a bootloop (or worse; bricked) because of failed update or a software bug.

I do care about permissions. But even that system is unethically compromised on Google's whim.

Google has totally removed the internet permission in an earlier update, saying its too common for apps to go online, which is a stupid reason at best. They could still mention internet as a permission on every app, with no side effects.
Even today if an app accesses the internet, it is not mentioned in the permissions of the app, not counting that internet is the prime carrier of every spyware, malware, etc.

Overall, Google is into dictatorship, and cares least of its users.
Recently, they removed DSD music playback starting Android version 10. What is this? Whch customer wants this to happen?

All the apps you download from GooglePlay? Only thing open source is the foundation of Android, which is Android AOSP. Everything else bolted on top is very much closed source. So, stop pretending you even know what you're talking about when you clearly don't understand any of it. Also I love how people declare something being open source being instantly better and more private when all you do is depend on someone else to vet the code and then be loud about it everywhere. Which is not much different than closed source.

Just because 3 apps you use are open source doesn't make any Android variant found on phones "open source".
