Google Play Store might be removing app permissions overview in favor of new Data Safety info

16 July 2022
App permissions might disappear from app listings which doesn't sound great.

Seeing permissions is crucial to me. With them removed I would have to install each app to test it? No way. I'm not that crazy.

I always cared about permissions when downloading apps. If some app will require some strange permission, I would not download it and look for other similar app (if possible).
Thus being said, if this info will disappear now, it will not affect me in great way. Because I have maybe 10 apps downloaded in my phone (apart from the ones already on the phone).
Is funny, sometimes I ask myself why I need a good smartphone. I use WhatsApp, Google Maps, Google Translate, Music app and 9gag as my main apps. No social media apps, no c*ncer tiktok, no gaming, no movie watching. Even arena, I am entering through web browser, not the actual app.

More control, less "privacy", if that word is even still applicable in 2022.

Moves like this sometimes makes me wonder if you are better off on iOS and under Apple's rules.

It's not "might be". It's already happening in the play store 🤦🏻‍♂️ I'm not sure in other countries Google play store, but mine already showing that thing since like a month ago 🙄

When I'm considering installing any app, I first check the rating, and then check the Permissions. If I am satisfied with the permissions, only then do I evaluate whether the app would meet my needs. There is absolutely no way I'd install any app without knowing the true permissions. Hopefully there will still be an easy way of determining the actual permissions prior to installing the app. I sometimes scan through a dozen or more apps before finding one that isn't going to try to grab sensitive data unnecessarily.

But if all I have to go on is Data Safety, then I don't expect to be installing any more apps, and Android becomes semi-useless. I mean, it's easy to predict the kind of headlines that will start appearing: "Survey finds 63% of top 1,000 Android apps list deceptive Data Safety information."

Very nice article. Two things: first, as you hinted at the end of the piece, a quite small percentage of users care (so much) about permissions. Second, IMHO this move is to shift the responsibility for any misusage/privacy issue from Google to the actual app developer, especially in light of the new European standards & laws.
