Ice Universe: Oppo is working on its own smartphone chipset

30 December 2022
We heard a similar rumor a year ago, back then it was claimed that Oppo is targeting TSMC's 3nm node (which ended up being delayed slightly).

It would be more interesting if it was ground up like Apple chipsets and make custom cores and GPUs but if any brand wants to make a chipset from scratch

It definitely will be SAMSUNG first not OPPO because of their higher budget and R&D as a tech company

But it doesn't mean they will be the first to get it right like Apple

Anonymous, 31 Dec 2022Samsung had been talking about Quantum Dot image sensors si... moreActually Invisage made a quantum dot sensor before anyone else, even apparently using it in a working prototype to use to shoot a short film. Its quality was mediocre, at best. Then Apple worked with another quantum dot sensor company, and that project got shelved, since it's quality wasn't too impressive and 8ts costs was too high.

Samsung and a few TV makers seem to be using quantum dot reasonably successfully. Thought OLED itself seems impressive, so how much more impressive other technologies, for TV really are, needs to be tested.

Quantum dot image sensor tech has probably been shelved. 16-bit HDR images from 14-bit ADC should Hopefully translate into the next level of imaging that should help smartphone image move to the next generation.

MediaTek had razor thin margins, hence why their chips were always lacking and not quite comparable to Qualcomm which operated moreso on the profitable high-end market.
Huawei has more money and pull, which is why they made better chips. Even still these were taking the stock designs mixed with stock wafers from TSMC. The trade-war and blacklisting caused their demise.
Samsung used more silicon per chip, because they can afford it, and because they get better pricing from Samsung Foundry. What affected them was their custom designs. They were usually the best industry trading blows with Qualcomm, until the Exynos 8895 when they had a noticeable efficiency (thus performance) disadvantage against Snapdragon.

I agree with your assessment but not your conclusion. BBK Electronics is the largest phone producer in the world, they're no small fry. I can see them buyout or more probably partner-up with ARM-China, MediaTek, SMIC, and Imagination Technologies China. Not to mention the Mainland Chinese market is huge, as well as alternative markets; India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brasil, Mexico, Russia, and African Continent etc etc.

Without substantial changes and improvements to image sensors, all improvements to ISPs would be only mindly incremental.

Image sensors need on-board ISP and 14-Bit and above ADC. And Triple and Quad Gain, for much better HDR (especially for video).

Anonymous, 31 Dec 2022oh please you don't know anything about US. do you al... moreThat's not how any of it works. Intel ME is just a CPU subsystem. Guess what, AMD also has one on their Ryzen CPU's. Samsung's Exynos chipsets also have them. Google's Tensor also has it. Microsoft's ARM devices also have it (Titan). These things manage security related things. They were not present decades ago when CPU's were pretty crude compute chips. Now they are very complex devices on its own. What you read and misunderstood is exploitation of said subsystem. It's not Intel secretly spying on you, it's bad actors exploting coplexity of these systems to spy on people. Which is no different than any security issue in operating system or any other device/component.

Anonymous, 30 Dec 2022It is not worth from financial point of view. - Apple h... moreHuawei was closer to Qualcomm than it was to Samsung before the US export controls. I agree it's probably not worth it for Oppo, but it probably is for the PRC. I'm sure there is some domestic initiative there similar to the chips act in the US to get their tech companies dedicating as many resources as possible. Honestly, SoC design isn't the problem. The fabs in China are just so far behind and they're not able to buy advanced tools from ASML to catch up. They will have to solve that problem first. More companies designing chips is probably just to ensure they are ready for that moment.

Anonymous, 30 Dec 2022So Oppo will be now on the entity list just like Hauwei. This was my expectation when I saw the recent announcement about their patent cross-licensing. The Chinese smart phone industry is probably too big to stall out with the entity list at this point. Focusing on the most advanced company, Huawei, was probably more of a strategic move. Ultimately, it won't make a long term difference. It's just buying time. SMIC is already making 7nm FinFET chips. If China or one of their allies are able to design some viable EUV tech it's game over. It's a tricky balance for the west to maintain some level of control without expediting their tech independence. I don't think any country should be able to weaponize the economy in this way, but it is what it is.

However, the government's claims that Huawei is spying have never been substantiated. It seems to be an it takes one to know one situation. Judging from what our government was caught doing with Prism it's easy to see how they could expect the PRC and Huawei to do something similar. We wind up with a situation of anti-capitalist practices to resolve political matters. It seems a bit hypocritical IMO. I think we should make it a priority to educate our population better so that our tech corporations would never have fallen behind Huawei in the first place.
