Anonymous, 16 May 2024Notification light? Really? You mean I should chose my pho... moreIt was always possible to disable the notification LED if you didn't care about it. When are we all as consumers stop being sheep and stop defending companies cost-cutting and making objectively worse products while selling it to us for the same, or even more, money?

I skipped the 1 V because of the missing LED. A phone is primarily a communication device to me and it is essential for a communication device that it can notify me of incoming communication. With various LED colors a glance at the phone is ebough to not only tell if but also how important or urgent that communication is. I have way better things to do both at work and when I'm home than grabbing my phone every 10 minutes to check if there's anything there.

And with further cost-cutting with 1 VI (4K>1080p) as well as added unnecessary width, this one will also be skipped. The 1 III is simply a far superior device, with the exception of battery "power" and, probably mostly unnoticeably in real-world usage, CPU power.

Perhaps I'll just buy a dumb-phone next :D, smartphones have been heading in a very wrong direction for a very long time now.

Anonymous, 16 May 2024Notification light? Really? You mean I should chose my pho... moreOut of many unique features Sony offered 4K, LED light, 21:9, SD card, 3.5mm and sleek design. Yes all of these mattered on top of chipset and camera performance.

Phone is something we use daily. Even a tiny detail matters. Never liked AOD for privacy reasons and at work. This notification LED light instantly grabs my eye attention in most discreet way possible.

Having said that, this year Xperia 1 VI is Xperia 5 VI in disguise and should have been priced at 999€. Otherwise they could have gone full madness with specs including 4K and priced at 1450€ or 1550€ like iPhone does in europe. That's my point here.

Maybe Sony cares for their money, or maybe they don't. We as the consumers can buy what we want. And the last, the very last factor for buying a phone is how many OTHERS use it. Well, besides a notification light. Don't know exactly what about I care less. Pfff...

They're not and they haven't been since about 2018. They have uses for some people but the average person has enough storage on their phone now and if not uses cloud storage. As for the 3.5mm jack, maybe 1 in 20 people I see listening to music on their phone using wired headphones of some sort with the other 19 using wireless headphones which are for all extent more convenient for daily life. I accept that some people do value these features but to the majority they are relics of a bygone era closer in value to built in FM radio than to an ultrawide camera.

I am going to buy this beautiful product (thanks for the GSM Arena test) in platinum Silver and it will replace my 1 V. I wonder if there will be something else in 2024 (Ace IV in Japan, 5 series canceled?, Pro Serie canceled ?)

I never see a lot of Japanese people with Samsung phones. It's always either iPhone or Xperia or Pixel, but not much Galaxy.

And another thing: While it's possible to buy unofficially available phones through imports, there's no guarantee it'll work on different network spectrum, especially when it comes to VoLTE and VoWiFi. Ask anyone here in Malaysia who buy Pixel phones, we can totally relate about it.

                        Thats not true, because:
                        1. Samsung (Galaxy) even has higher marketshare than sony Xperia in Japan, the homebase of Sony.
                        2. Official availability is not even an argument, when people these days could even buy anything they want through online shopping.

People don't buy Sony phone, purely because Sony phone is inferior and worst compared to other phones, even the japanese prefer iPhone over Sony 🤣

Accept that fact and move on.

DeepIn2U, 15 May 2024As long as your choice of portable monitors/ aka Headset su... moreI don't believe so. Most that I've seen complaining about 4K being gone are Xperia 1 (I to IV) users that were looking to upgrade.

I was looking to upgrade my 1 III last year already, as 1 V came to the market, till I realized that the "upgrade" didn't have a notification LED and would be a (for me) huge downgrade.

Hoping they would come to their senses I waited another year and now another essential feature is gone and I'll continue using the 1 III, if they keep the nonsense up, until it dies, and then buy any midranger that would happen to have a microSD and no notch.

The change of the aspect ratio, i.e. the phone becoming significantly wider is by itself a negative, but I would still perhaps consider it; a 1080p display makes it a simple no for me, haven't had a 1080p display on my private phone for almost 10 years now, and that was a "no-name" 250 € one, not a 1400 € "2024 flagship". And the difference, even with 1 III's width, compared to my work S23 with 1080p and about the same width, is very obvious. On a narrow 5, for 500 € less, i could live with 1080p. If there appears such a phone later this year, we'll see.

The rest of the alleged upgrades are in comparison to what I'd lose with an "upgrade" to 1 VI either irrelevant or insignificant.

So most certainly not a hater, can effortlessly afford one or a couple dozen of them, if I'd do everything that's possible on this product (what ever that may be on a phone) is of no concern to the manufacturer. 99 % of Porsches ever sold have never seen anything resembling a race track and I don't see Porsche complaining about those customers as long as they happily give them 100.000+ € per car.

And losing customers, what Sony is doing here, is generally a very bad idea.

My last Sony phone was 2011's Sony Ericsson Arc. After Ericsson left, Sony phones has become a ghost of its former self and i speak on the camera departure to be specific. It never made sense to me that Sony is the main provider of its sensor to the vast majority of phones and still can't perfect its sensors on its own phones. It makes me sad really.

Will keep a watchful eye though.

Anonymous, 15 May 2024Even if sony was 1000 euros and samsung 1500 euros, S24u wo... moreThe only reason Samsung sells more than Sony is because of much wider official availability.
