It is way too thick. Something like Z is reasonable not Z1.
I know Z is only water resistant but it is far than enough.

But they are so clueless when they start comparing the bezels on Z1 with other phones that doesn't have same specs and not waterproof.

S4 Mini has 4.3 inch QHD display (540 x 960 pixels) not FHD (1080 x 1920 pixels).
One Mini has 4.3 inch HD Display (720 x 1280 pixels) Also not FHD (1080 x 1920 pixels).

I guess the tradeoff is a thicker profile which is fine and with a removable battery, it's simply amazing. ZL also is stunning even though it's not waterproof. I know that Z1 bezels helped on some ways but like I said, people tends to compare things especially with the intense competition, they can't help but notice the bezels.

40 $ difference between Z1 and Z1S ? That´s ridiculous. Sony saves around 80$ by using the smaller display and battery! Cool deal Sony!!! And they miss the trend to sell phones cheaper: look at e.g. Nexus 5. Sony wake up!
I think I will get the "old" Samsung S4 active. Measures height, has a removable battery and it´s just a long time available. So I don´t have to wait till Q1 (or better Q2, dear Sony!)
The fotos of my girlfriends Xperia V (13 MP) are already disappointing, especially when using HDR (with only 8 MP). I don´t think that the 20 MP of the Z1/Z1S change here so much.
I think the only 8 MP of Samsungs S4 active can still compete. But most important: It has a changeable battery! (I´m not of those guys who change their cellphone when the battery is empty ;-) But Outdoor I take two of them with me. While the Z1S will be empty.... Z1S was my dream. S4 active will be my reality.

AnonD-111968, 22 Nov 2013Given the fact on the other side of your world are other pe... moreLots of phones have bezels and I personally do not consider the bezel on the Z1 as excessive or huge part of what appear to you to be the bezel is actually part of the screen where the on screen buttons are located. The comparison with the iPhone is apposite because by your definition, the iPhone would have humungous bezels which I do not find aesthetically unpleasant. Most Sony phones do not have huge bezels and the bezels on the Z and Z1 are due to the water proof/resistant nature of the phone with the Z1's thin form also having to house a 3,000mAh battery and huge camera sensor without the ugly bulge of the S4 Zoom/Nokia 1020. On balance the design of the Z1 is perfect, in my judgement and it seems only others who do not own the phone, have never touched the phone seem obsessed with bezels. I suggest you go look at the black variant lying flat without a case and appreciate a thing of beauty. As I have posted before, I also own a 32gb LG G2 which I am very fond of but in truth, the build quality and overall look and feel of the Z1 is unbeatable. You like what you like and good for you. BTW, on a recent trip, those bezels made my film watching experience a joy as I did not have to hold the phone for 3 hours by the edges! A big plus in my book.

Is yours huge? Like 2mm with gigantic black beans in it? And LG g2 is ugly, it has abnormally over squeezed screen. Most brands got bezel same as Sony except for their flagship coz Sony choose water proof.
Check out Xperia zl, that's what Sony can do if they want to.
We choose winning brands. You got your choice, get lg looser.

Until this day there is no one can make waterproof phone bezelles body, just look the different between S4 vs S4 Active or Optimus G vs Optimus GJ.
From what i know Xperia UL with “135 (high) x 71 (wide) mm” has the best screen to bezels/body ratio when it comes to waterproof phone.
And remember Xperia Z1f (Z1 mini japanese version) with 127 x 65 x 9.4 mm is a great engineering achievements because it comes with powerful chipsets, large 1/2.3" camera sensor, big 2300 mAh battery and IP58 certification.
If you can find any waterproof phones with same specs but in smaller dimension than Z1, ZU, and Z1f show it to me please!

Perhaps Sony engineers or fans may think that something must be done to at least minimize the bezels. Well, they must have run countless simulation before finalizing the design and thought that huge bezels benefit on some ways. But we cannot ignore the fact that people notice it, and wonder if there's a way to trim it slightly. However Sony is quickly defended that it's just fine by comparing it with Iphone, sounds reasonable. But people still notice that huge bezels not because they hated Sony but because it is what strike the eyes, the first time you behold the the Z1/Ultra. But I am positive that Sony is able enough to produce a beautiful phone like Z1 which is waterproof and that time they will try to win the hearts of slim-bezel lovers by trying to minimize it as possible.
