Windows phone needs to work on these important things
1. Media player that plays all audio/video formats.
2. Windows explorer, like in windows 6.5 to manage files.
3. Enable USB on the go on all models.
4. I miss opera, I would really love to have opera web browser on my WP, ie needs a lot of improvement starting with unlimited tabs, think 15 would be enough though.
Apps will grow in time but those points mentioned above, if they are available, no windows phone owner would switch and a lot of owner of other os would grab WP. You would sooner or later get tired of most of the apps and games but media, is something that never leaves you.

Make sure WP8.5 has all the apps that iOS and Android have. Otherwise it is very difficult for people to switch.
Make sure WP8.5 has cool U/I, get rid of all Metro....

Phones are nice but passionately hate blink feed and tiles as a mandatory home screen. 12-16 Tiles are as way too busy looking as apposed to a pleasant picture screen of choice and then the next screen after home screen should be tiles of choice is better. Also WP cant change key pad to a alphanumeric key pad for messaging. Not everyone wants to be relegated to individual letters. Fix these an were in.

for all those guys worrying nd screaming that 8.1 is the last update for 20 series device...i must tell u that it is confirmed that all windows phone 8 devices will be able get windows phone 9 update ....
surf the web guys...please.

I'll look forward for this, though I don't have plan to buy any WP. I'm just curious how far will MS 'improve' on WP 8.5
Just look at WP user voice, http://windowsphone.uservoice.com/forums/101801-feature-suggestions/filters/top, there's still lot of thing missing from WP.
They still don't have a basic File Explorer. Still no phone/SMS whitelist app. Still no VM allowed for emulator.
That's why I'm looking forward for WP8.5 . If those basic features are still missing, it only proves further that WP OS is very childish and immature.

If WP 8.1 would be the last update for the current Nokia devices, Nokia would spiral downwards again...

last week I moved from windows phone to android(Nexus 5). Till now below is my observation:
1. Android is awesome in terms of app and level of notification customization which was missing in windows 7.5.
2. Windows was more stable I don't remember when I have seen app crashing. On android on an average I have seen one crash till now.
3. I am not happy with nexus 5 battery life.
4. On windows Facebook integration was much better than android.

I'll have to be waiting for at least 4 months to arrive the 8.1 update, as MS is releasing that next month. But I'm happy that they're not abandoning us.(Lumia 520 owner)

Did I actually read the bit about updates of live tiles correctly? They only update every 30 minutes. Very useful for an email tile that gets messages every few minutes!
