Nokia Lumia 920 review: The Luminary

04 December 2012
Not the best of times then for the Finns, but the right time for a flagship to show its worth. Saying that the future of the company is being decided here is probably too much. But the Lumia 920 could be the difference between living with dignity and scratching a living on emerging markets...

lols, Samsung Ativ S beats the NL920 in display contrast ratio, speakerphone test, and audio output tests. i think these are the three important daily smartphone usage fields and NL920 scores below avg in all the three tests. I feel pity for those loyal Nokia fans...

Three weeks in now. I wouldn't swap this mobile for any other. I love it. You would have to chop my hand of to get it away from me.

so after the review ,let's discuss the pros and cons of the lumia 920:
            the pros:

1.capacitive screen that respond to the gloves
2.................ok now let's go to the cons.

            the cons:

1.4.5" 16M-color PureMotionHD+ IPS display bla bla bla
that has unnoticeable useless high response rate ,competitors have deeper black ,better viewing angle, better sunlight legibility .

2.very ugly and heavy with only 4.5" screen while competitors have larger screen and smaller nicer body!!!!

            3.moderate battery performance:
            talk time galaxy premier 11:30
            gs3 10:15
            onex 9:57
            lumia 8:56
            iphone5 8.42

            web browsing iphone5 9:56
            galaxy premier 6:40
            gs3 6:27
            lumia 5:40
            onex 4:18

            Video playback Galaxy Premier 12:51
            iphone5 10:12
            gs3 9:27
            lumia 6:19
            onex 5:45
            4.windows phone 8(ugly,no live wall paper or even a normal wallpaper,missed features,missed apps,no widgets,no personalization...etc)

5.below average loud speaker(u will not hear your phone ringing in the crowed)

6.unlike android phones the lumia is unable to play all video formats and unable to show subtitles.

7."the Nokia Lumia 920 audio output wasn't particularly great or worthy of the flagship status of the device."

            8. Optical Image stabilization with floating lens technology bla bla bla....the camera produce lower quality images than the iphone and the galaxy s3 in the day light but batman will diffidently go for lumia.

9."Videos have the same oversaturated colors and smudgy details that troubled the still camera. The dynamic range is okay, but the camera sacrifices darker areas again." "Audio is recorded in mono (99Kbps, 44.1kHz), which is rather disappointing,"

the question now ,with all these disadvantages of the lumia there are people who will buy it,Who are they?

            answer:nokia fanboys,Finns...and....

"The Sold Out signs are no accident"

No, they are the result of small stocks. Just google "Nokia Lumia 800 sold out" and look every news about a year ago...

"Keep in mind though that while the OIS works great for static scenes, moving objects in low-light scenes might still turn out blurry due to the slow shutter speed (motion blur)."

Thank you for being one of the very few sites who mention this.

"The dynamic range is okay, but the image processing leaves shadowy areas dark and you'll need to put the photos through an image editing program if you want to bring their detail out (that would increase the noise though)."

At µ 1.4 pixel size, the dynamic range will NOT be okay. Don't look just at the shadows. Look also at the highlights. Every area that is even a little bit brighter, is blown up. That's a trademark of small pixels.

It really doesn't offer much of a real world advantage over the high end androids or iphone...
I thought it was going to excel in features that it was marketed with....but sadly they all turn out to be average...

I wanted to buy this but I will skip this one...windows phone has a long way to go(not to forget the apps).

GSMArena: "And it's not just about the looks either. The non-painted unibody is built to last and even when you scratch it, the same color polycarbonate appears underneath, so it's way harder to spot."

AnonD-57901, 05 Dec 2012Let's boycott Nokia's wp8. So that they will adopt plan B-... moreIf someone starts using Windows Phone he will not go back to android. Android UI is awful. Android with all 4 cores is still laggy and prone to malwares. WP8 is the most secure OS till date. No known malwares till now. Shitheads here think that if they use Android they are some kind of powerusers.

This is just a minor image post processing issue. I use Lumia 920 and trust me its the best. Whenever someone sees my mobile their jaws drop, that's its beauty.

So the Pureview image from this Lumis 920 is just so so quality only (except the nightshoot). Maybe Nokia just market it as the Lumia Nightwatch 920.

I agree word for word that you have mentioned. And being an avid Windows fan, I do hope this platform make its mark. Androids are fabulous. Its just that I'm a little tired of seeing it everywhere. Now its time for a little change. When WP will rise neck to neck with Android, then we will see even better offerings from both the platforms. That's what we, the true gadget freaks want, ryt? cheers!

Well I ended up having to exchange mine due to a bad battery. ( drained in less then 6 hours while I slept from 100 to 0 ) New one works perfectly & it seems that the sound issue has been fixed. My Nokia 920 WITH NO AMP sounds EXACTLY like the Sony Z walkman with LOD & E7.  Get this, I am using Ultrasone pro 900s. Yes with NO amp directly plugged into the phone playing a lossless audio file it sounds exactly the same as Sony Z with LOD and miles ahead of my IPOD with lod.  I am stunned, amazed. Even with the amp somehow @ both source & amp maxed volume it gives me no distortion at all and amazing clean sound.  I am going to sell my Ipod & Sony Z to friends now, no need for either, this phone sounds much better.
