It is also possible that Asus was overwhelmed by popularity of the phone and has no surplus sets to replace faulty ones with.
Although this is not much of consolation, but these things get sorted out as soon as supply chain stabilizes, and I can't see this kind of demand persisting for a long time.
Then again, anything is possible.

I am uneasy giving release dates as they slipped several times already, but it is imminent.
Rooting is only needed if you wanted to force a downgrade. You cannot install older OS over newer or same version on a non rooted phone.

I bought my zenfone past several week ago and only received 1.18 system update. And if I upgrade to android kitkat, should this problem will resolve? But anyway, you received the phone several months back and then received every update. Many people who bought it later, only received last update but are missing all the rest of them in between.
I believe this is what is causing many issues and I replicated it by rooting phone to 1.14... well, that was the earliest one I've had, then root got removed, and I tapped system update.
Needless to say, it downloaded 30 MB 1.18.40 only, skipping all the earlier ones.
It is behaving very bad, speaker sucks, so does camera, hangs at times, flash does not work properly, it's heating and battery life is dreadful.
Repeated the process and loaded 1.14 again, then manually loaded complete 1.17.40 and tapped system update again - and problems are gone.
This is somewhat a proof that Asus screwed up update process big time.
But at the same time, with no ability to downgrade without rooting, I also have no solution, except recommending NOT to OTA update system for next update if by some miracle it is still JellyBean, but to load full 700 MB firmware file instead.
As for the case next is Kit Kat - that will overwrite whole OS anyway, so it should fix these issues.

Well i have other issues too
My earphones were working fine
I was listening to songs n in the middle of a song the earphones started sounding like the incompatible earphones (like the jellybean customised earphones sound in a gingerbread device). They only work when i pull them a lil out of the jack.
Plus my capacitive keys freeze n hang often
Then i have to press power or volume buttons multiple times to make them work.
I haven't found any Zenfone 5 user to have this problem till now
Any suggestions???

"Unable to move app to device memory." Error shown. Also while moving compass app to device memory fone restarted. Sometimes (rarely) apps do crash. Tried image editor that's awesome man. If i click pict... moreI just tested on mine, and have no such issues, although I can say that some photos are far noisier than I would have liked.
Seems it spiced ISO up for some reason.
Is it possible that you have fingerprints or other smudges on the lens?
Generally such an error would be wrong light metering (over exposed), or processing fault (contrast error), or reflection (dirty lens).
The 2 501CG and 1 500KL that I have here do not have this issue, so it could be your particular phone, although it is still possible that the error comes from the software.

It is possible that the power management failed and is cooking CPU. Most of the time this can be resolved by a factory reset, where firmware gets reloaded from the recovery partition.
May I ask if your phone is being in any kind of case, and if so, whether the case is silicon or polymer?
The reason I ask is because I've had 2 other phones, when recording in 4k video resolution cook the CPU when in silicon case, but had no issue in plastic case with the same phones.
Yes, Atom does run hotter than ARM processor, but it should not cause any smell, under any circumstances, as the power management system should throttle the CPU down when it starts reaching the maximum temperature. Obviously there's no fan to cool the CPU inside, so lowering the clock is all it can do.
As mentioned earlier, in JellyBean, power management cannot turn parts of the CPU off, hence 800 MHz is as low as it can go, with both cores and all sub-cores running.

As for hanging - have you updated the system firmware? I would recommend you to load the full 1.18.40 from Asus website if you have not.
Many of the complaints/bugs are getting fixed when reported, but obviously that's in the new firmwares.
I'd try that first, if you still have issues, then maybe write more details on what games hang, maybe some other gamer in here can help.
