So I downloaded Google Files, found a .flac file which I loaded earlier on the phone, and went OPEN WITH Google Play Music.
It opened the flac and played the file in a floating widget. I can't get into the app - its just stays as a widget.
Does anyone know how to properly use Google Play Music? I've rummaged online and can't figure out why it won't see local audio files, unless I force it to open via a File Manager (like Google Files). Really want to keep app downloads to a minimum

Try Musicolet, it's free, no ads and available on the Play Store.
Also, it can show your music in folders, even folder tree structure, so that's a big plus in my book.

Anyone able to recommend a half-decent, ad-free music player? I'm coming from a Galaxy S6 to a Pixel. Didn't realise that Google Play Music would is unable to play .flac.
This is a nice phone so far. My only concern is it's got half the storage of my 128GB S6, and it doesn't have as much built-in software that Samsung did (I used most of the bloat, which meant less downloaded from the Play Store). Still haven't tested mkv playback because the phone only came with a USB C-C cable....!

Anonymous, 09 Nov 2019Is it true that Pixels don`t get the same software support ... morePartly. There are no limits in regard to the firmware update, but some of the newest features on Pixel 4, such us gesture control do not work in many countries.
The Pixel 3a works well, all functions are on.

Is it true that Pixels don`t get the same software support from Google in countries where there aren`t official Google sales stores, or not, anyone knows???

Yes, their prices are getting more and more affordable but your trusty wired earphones would always be available. Imagine having to charge your BT earphones/headphones when you need them the most. LOL Not needing an additional device to charge other than your phone is cool.
If you don't miss it, then don't use it. It's just good to know that it's there.

Not having to charge it is the best thing about wired headphones; the ability to just pull it out of your pocket and plug it in not worrying about whether it's charged or not is great.

Some people are desperately trying to impose the opinion that headphone jack is in the past. If John doesn't miss it at all it's all fine, but looking to convince someone he's the one companies should follow is unreasonable. Besides reliable connection, a wired pair of headphones can be used at any time. Then some people like having several high quality cans like Senh, Focal, Sony, Aeon etc connected to high quality DACs available in certain phone models. In such times BT may be convenient as far as wireless but impractical from a SQ point.
Therefore John, please have some understanding when old school people prefer wired connections and a headphone jack.

It's 2019. Everyone going wireless. It's time to realize that headphone jack is in the past now and soon there won't be any phones equipped with it at all. Who wants wires anyway. It's really inconvenient. I don't miss it at all.

Except camera and software. Pixels will always have a leg up on this, except for OnePlus' OxygenOS, but it's still a skin, and not quite as visually pleasing, but it does have some very useful additions.

Yep, 14 Oct 2019How is the battery life on this phone? gsmarena forgot to r... moreBattery life is one of the strongest points with this device. Efficient hardware with a decent sized battery makes for a minimum of 5 hours continuous screen usage under heavy load (gaming, GPS nav, etc.)
Screen time is said to be similar but the XL model's bigger battery size will allow for allow for more standby time in between.
