I will advice every one not to buy this phone from 3. It seems they go for refurbished phones. I got one from 3 on the 18th of December 2010 and it packed up on the 19th of January 2011 two days after the 28 days warranty.
Their customer service manager is so inept

On Windows/MacOS/Linux user have responsibility to
          terminate applications.

Android is designed to take care of your applications, and that is why we should not kill task by ourselves.

My advice (from firsthand) is that you should switch off all things that you do not use all the time:
          - Turn on GPS only when you nieed it.
          - For data traffic use Wi-Fi or Mobile network (there is no need for both of them to be enabled at the same time).
          - Adjust brightness to your visual abilities (I am most comfortable with 30-40%).
          - Do not use many widgets.

It depends of use, but my battery last 1,5 day average.

I got HTC Desire (A8181 model) 3 moths ago, and I am very satisfied.

            Great dimension, design and performance.
It has Super LCD screen (only A8183 model comes with AM-OLED), great brightness and detail level. Good touch response too.
In-call sound is clear and good.
            Wi-Fi and Bluetooth works fine.
Compass and GPS works fine too.
And above all, powered by Android Froyo.
            Great combination.

Camera and headphones are of medium quality.
There is better solutions in the market (like Sony-Ericsson).

Only disadvantage is small ROM (512 MB).
The main problem is that only 147 MB goes to application storage.
But, this can be solved by rooting your device, and get all permissions.

            Really great phone.

It has to say 3.7 AMOLED Display for it to be AMOLED.

I liked the Android phones over the iPhone 4 but the battery of HTC Desire does not last over 8 hours on EDGE/GPRS networks if applications are refreshing periodically. Obviously, the phone which comes with application is supposed to have long lasting battery. Otherwise, a basic phone (like Nokia 1210) is good enough to talk. It is major flaw by the HTC product development team.
