Stuntman, 11 Dec 2010It is interesting what you say about the quality of apps on... morewhats more important is that i can play games on the N900 anywer anytime, dont need to activate packet data for anyone to force stupid ads on me. Lately all my free games and apps in android is telling me to buy LGs latest android fone, i cant even browse my files without getting ads. Paying for those apps is not an option, then i could just as well use iPhone and pay for everything.
Even more sad is that Nokia doesnt seem to have plans for a user friendly successor of N900. So im stuck with android for now, until HTC or someone jumps on the meego bandwagon. If only N900 had more physical RAM it would still be the best when overclocked to 800-900MHz. Well, battery life is an issue also...

I had a very good pinball game on it. When I switched to a Desire Z, all of the pinball game I could find were crappy.
Overall, it is still much better than my N97, but almost anything would have been an improvement.

Blackberry is for business users, for everyone else it has almost nothing to offer.

Its been a while now that i had my Desire Z. Coming from N900 before that. I have to admit im getting a little fed up with android ways, ads and whatever restrictions they force onto the users. I can never love this fone as i loved my N900, Android is very inferior to Maemo5, and while there are many apps to Android, none of them is as god as the few apps availablfor N900. An example, for a long time there was onli one Sudoku available for N900, and God knows how many for android, but i cant find any sudoku for android as good as the single one for N900.
The music player is another example, while N900's original player has a serious shortcoming in playlists it is still better in other ways. And then the litttle thing called Easy Debian, Android will never see that kinda application powers. And dont need to root it to do fun terminal stuff and watever, and so on and on. And sorry to say Froyo cannot match N900 in webbrowsing, i think the maemo browser is still the onli real webbrowser on a fone, it was built from real firefox, its not an inherently mobile browser like all the others are.
Still, Desire Z is my main unit, good enough.

YES it has a plastic cover over the lens. This is a very bad thing in fones that has the flash under the same plastic cover, as light from the LEDs will flare through the plastic and seriously reduce photo contrast. Not a problem on Desire Z. I guess removing it will still improve photo quality a bit but theis cam is not high end so the difference is for a big part placebo effect maybe.
MADE IN CHINA is correct. China isnt bad at manufacturing, what they stink at is product development and quality control. Since this is a taiwan construction and is under HTCs quality control its not a problem. Chinese takes no pride in craftsmanship and quality, so its very important that the mother company keep them under strict surveillance. A good example is chinese made yamaha motorcycles, its top quality, while other brands made in china start falling apart already when driving them of the assembly line. This is not ment as offensive to chinese workers, its (more or less) the exact words of a chinese friend of me.

hi guys, i am using a nokia n97 n i want to switch to htc desire z... i have read the comments here n checked the youtube vids n its really confusing... i want to buy this phone but the only thing making me think is the hinge... can someone plz tell me exactly how they r? i mean in normal use are they really annoying????

I fully satisfied with this handset but my small concern is my handset is Made in China. Is there any problem?
Also I read about htc desire handset that It had (not good quality) plastic cover on camera lens under the frame.

If you remove that you will get best picture quality.
Is there Any such thing about Desire Z?
I try to remove ( I think its there) but can, and I dont wanna take risk with scratches on camera lens.
So please suggest me how to remove easily ?

This phone is great. Great in build, OS, connectivity, QWERTY and market. It's great to combine "Best of two worlds" as said by HTC. The fact is it's not just two worlds.
Regarding the loose hinge issue, it's comfortable. Not loose to cause annoyance, it's rather should be called "smooth". I know for many people it will seem not reliable, but I knew that it's made of metal, the hinge parts, and I also know that HTC covers any manufacturing issues under warranty.
My only issue here is that it doesn't support Multi-lingual read/write. I'm just trying to search for a solution, but not till now I found one.

Just got the phone and its great! One problem though. When recieving text messages the phone labels them as a different time than a sent text. This places the texts in the wrong order for the conversation view. Not a big deal but a little annoying. Is this something I'm doing or is it something wrong with the phone?

Also, when you open and close the keyboard, it would slam open or close harder. Are you having difficulties keeping the keyboard open and close when you are holding the phone normally?

I have all along been a fan of the blackberry torch, but after having a taste of android on my friend's htc desire hd, i'm moving towards the htc desire z as i need a physical qwerty keypad.
Am i making the right choice? the colours and the screen of the desire HD really wowed me, and i think the blackberry torch won't look and feel as good..

i made a comment coz im using this phone as well since a week now. i have used so many different phones with keyboard but this one is really loose. it may not affect anything but it shouldnt be like this in the first place.

shobz, 09 Dec 2010the slide z mechanism doesnt seem durable. it also very loose. im using it. the hinges are not that soft. opening and closing the keyboard with ease. of course holding it upside down will causes the 'top part' of the phone to close back to the 'keyboard section'. why will we need the hinges to be so hard that we a significant amount of force to open and close it? the movement is smooth. it will not get loose any moment. once you push it to a certain level, the spring will push it all out. making too rigid will defeat the purpose. time will tell whether it will last. no point make ridiculous assumptions now. having it in my hands now, im confident enough to say its durable enough.
