cheerz, 25 Nov 2010So as I said earlier I was wondering if that Z or the iPhon... more@cheerz
Let me see if I understand you correctly. You are saying that the keyboard slides out easily and by holding one part of the phone and tilting it, gravity is enough to cause the keyboard to slide out. I want to make sure that is what you mean when you said, "the upper part popped out."
If this is the case, then it is by design. I have seen videos of people holding either the keyboard part or the screen part and gravity is able to pull the other half apart, so it partially or fully opens. They designed the hinge to be loose so that it is easy to open and close.
I think you are expecting that the spring in the hinge will be strong enough to hold both parts together (screen and keyboard) when you hold only one. This is not the case. This may appear to be a defect, but it is by design as I said before to be easily opened and closed.
Now, I need to ask you, are you really going to hold a phone, any phone, like that and then slowly tilt it? The iPhone that you bought, have you ever decided to actually hold half of it and then slowly tilt it? I can tell you that in my 3 weeks of owning it, I have never held it that way. When I am holding the phone with the keyboard closed, I am gripping the sides. The way I grip it, it is either resting on the palm of my hand or my normal grip is enough to keep both the screen and keyboard closed.
The only issue you may have is if you have the keyboard open and are only holding the keyboard part. If you then lie down on a bed and lean back onto your back with the phone above you, gravity will be enough to flip the screen closed. I generally do not use the phone this way as I find my arms get tired quickly. I may just read, but would likely not use the keyboard to type stuff.
I find that the test you made is unlikely going to happen in normal use. People would only ever hold the phone that way unless they were actually testing the spring of the hinge. The looseness of the hinge spring does not necessarily reflect on the robustness of the hinge.
I have used the N97 as well. The slide and tilt mechanism on that phone is designed with a tighter spring. The tighter spring prevents the keyboard from opening up due to gravity if you only hold the keyboard or screen part. However, the tighter spring means that you have to apply more force to open and close the keyboard. I found that the keyboard on the N97 more difficult to open and close than the Desire Z.
The solution to the loose hinge is not to buy a cover to keep the keyboard closed. The solution is to simply, hold it normally. You cannot say that you will regularly hold your iPhone that way normally.

So as I said earlier I was wondering if that Z or the iPhone is my Phone. So I thought I’d give some feedback here. At last I decided HTC wins - it's such a nice phone, has all the freedom that Android provides besides I am not exactly one of those Apple-lovers. So I went to the shop with the idea to get it. As I first saw it in my hands I thought it was really a beautiful phone. It's another thing to see it on picture, but live it's a big deal with all the metal parts and stuff– it’s really stylish. What else there is to say, you could read it all in the review above - brilliant display, great specs, the keyboard is also very pleasant to handle, the Android is great and so on... And than came the disappointment. As it was closed I held the phone for the bottom part and pointed (very slowly!) downwards. Then the upper part popped out! On its own! The exact words of the shop assistant as he saw that were: "You gota be kidding me!" He was deeply astonished. And I thought "What the f***!" If it pops out on its own on the first day, how would it behave after several months of heavy use? Let me tell you- it will probably fall down on its own... I repeated the exercise and got the same result every single time - the both parts are so unstable and it always pops out. The only solution that came to my mind is to buy some cover which will hold the both parts together, something like the iPhone bumper. But that defeats the whole idea of having a phone with a keyboard! HTC how could you allow that?! Such flaws are inadmissible for a company like HTC as well as for a product which is supposed to be one of the best in the whole line. Though I was always in sympathy with HTC, I am so sorry, but I had to go with the iPhone. I really wanted to avoid the apple. And now I have to install the silly iTunes...

Anonymous, 24 Nov 2010lol what it tried to say in ma previous post, the wifi ante... moreI generally use the phone in landscape mode when browsing the internet. I generally sit in the same room as my WiFi router, so I do not have a singal issue. Occasionally, I use the phone on a different floor and do notice the WiFi signal drop to a low level. I think it just slows it down a bit, but so far I did not have much of an issue due to low signal.
As for antenna design, there are only so many places to put the antenna. If you put it on the side or the bottom, you'll have the same issue at some point. There's probably no part of the phone where my hand doesn't cover it at some point during my use.

Anonymous, 24 Nov 2010heehe, Nokia E7... Its a joke of a fone, superslow outdated... moreRegarding power, the Desire Z has a feature that tells you what is using the power. I find that generally, the screen sucks up the most power. The power usage is usually at least 60% because of the screen and can go to 80% or more. What uses power the second most is GPS. Everything else on the Android phone uses very little power.
These are just my usage patterns. I'm on my phone often checking my social networks and browsing the internet and reading mail. I have the screen on a lot. Compared to my old N97, the battery on the Desire Z doesn't last quite as long. Now my usage patters are likely different because when you get a new phone, you play around with it more because you try different configurations. I drained my N97 when I first got it and then usage lowered. I'm about to get pass that novelty period on my Desire Z. Both phones need recharging every single day.

0v0, 24 Nov 2010then what u will say about Desire Z:
1)- LCD screen.
2)- ... more@0v0:
Regarding the E7, I was also considering it as I was using the N97 at the time. The Desire Z came out sooner even though both were announced a day apart. Now the E7 has been delayed again until next year.
The other thing I was concerned about was the E7 browser. I've seen some issues with the N8 browser. Even though Opera Mini is a workable alternative and has some good features that not even the Android browser has, I do not feel I would have a complete enough browsing experience with the E7. I have heard that the E7 browser is supposed to be superior than the N8 browser, but it is mainly hear say and not something I can confirm. The only thing official I have seen is that the new Nokia browser (for all Symbian 3 phones) will not be ready until February.
I have heard good things about the Clear Black Display on the E7. It is supposed to be very good in sunlight. As I already mentioned, the Desire Z screen seems decent to me in sunlight as well as I spent several minutes in the sun until I got too cold.
The lack of a secondary camera on the Desire Z only matters if you do video calling. I don't.
Screen size and resolution matters more depending on what you usually look at. Graphics and pictures will appear sharper on the Desire Z due to higher pixel density. For text, a larger screen may be more comfortable. I think it's more to do with the font and zoom level. I personally do not care too much if the letters are a bit jagged. Whether you can see more text on the E7 depends on font size and zoom. You're talking about a difference of less than 10% for the screen size between 3.7" and 4". Just hold a phone in front and then move it 2 inches closer or farther and see if you notice the text quality.
I cannot say what the sound quality of the E7 is. I do feel that the N97 has better sound than the Desire Z. In any case, if you do plan to listen to music, you'll probably be using earphones anyway.
I like the tilt and slide keyboard of the N97. I personally feel that the N97 hinge mechanism is better than the Desire Z. I think the E7 resembles the N97 a lot in this aspect. I am getting used to the Desire Z keyboard now. With any new keyboard, it will simply take some time to adjust.
What is important to you in a phone? For me it's internet, so I think the Desire Z is the choice for me.

Anonymous, 24 Nov 2010lol what it tried to say in ma previous post, the wifi ante... morethis is true also for N900, typing in landscape mode in areas with low signal can cause signal loss, both on cell network and wifi. Holding the right hand more under the fone than on the side while typing helps, but is ofcors awkward. Lucky its not usually a problem, but it can happen, yes.

0v0, 24 Nov 2010Dear Stuntman,
thanks for your valuable reviews......
i h... more@0v0:
I used to use an N97, so I went from 3.5" to 3.7". I do not feel 3.7" is too small for me at least. I do a lot of browsing on the internet with my Desire Z. I have it set up with a default font and zoom level that is comfortable for me to read. I find I never have to use the pinch zoom feature when reading any form of text.
I also use the Navigation app on my phone. The phone is about 3 feet (90 cm) away from me when it rests on the car mount. I do not have any problems reading street names when using the turn by turn navigation. I also use the Nav app if I simply want to view nearby streets to get around some congestion. The Navigation app also has a traffic view with is a very zoomed out view. You have to know the layout of the city in order to use it.

0v0, 24 Nov 2010then what u will say about Desire Z:
1)- LCD screen.
2)- ... moredont forget that E7 has onli 640x360 resolution, thats really low (check the calendar, its 2011 soon), so if it has bigger screen with amoled tech its still more outdated. You try to mess around the web on an 640x360 symbian fone, its not fun, its a serious limitation. Plus crappy browser on symbian fones, whats the point of a bigger screen when you are facing those limitations? Its a resolution found in 2.8 inch displays.
Desire Z has its limitations also, but none as severe as E7s procesor, operating system and screen resolution. And pls try the slider (slammer) on nokia N97 or N97 Mini first, some ppl find it satisfying and others are scared. Personally i hate it, it looks stupid in open position and is very uncomfortable to use.

lol what it tried to say in ma previous post, the wifi antena is right on top of your phone or something, so if you hold it with two hand (as you suppost to do if you use the actuall keyboard) you wifi reception decreases drasticly. (same as the iphone 4 signal when u hold it in the left corner). I have infomed htc about it and they dont seem to care what so ever. Cant bring back the phone anymore, so what to do? any1 has any ideas?
