I update my HTC HERO to 2.1 with date tip 06.08.2010 without backuping any data and I don't lost any data after I upgrade it including contacts. TY for the tip. I recomend to all users GO fore it. Every app is beter, onli the phone is litle slower and ofcorse the BT works great.

And
How do I backup everyhing so I don't lose it? How does it work if you lose everything when it's upgraded anyway?

Hi, I'm from Indonesia (Asia), I already upgraded my hero to 2.1 (eclair) OTA..
It's simple, just change your phone date to next 1-2 month, then a notification pop-up will shown and ask you to upgrade to 2.1, follow the instruction
The size of upgrade about 80MB..GOod Luck
