To close apps, just press the back button, or press the menu button when in an app, etc, and select "Exit" - but not all of them have an exit button, so most end with the back button.
you can use a taskkiller, to end apps, but thats pretty much overkill.
As to your data usage, get a tariff, that has a mobile network/internet allowance, and until then, disable mobile network in wireless settings.

Ive got two questions, how do I close apps and also, I've noticed my phone keeps on sending/receiving data, leaving me with the bill. Any reason why?

You can't really, 1 account, 1 phone.
To get out of it completely, theres a file you have to clear in applications.

really LG GT 540 mobile is very good.user friendly,coming to the performance... some what slower than se x10....but same appearance and the ear piece volume,ring volume is good..teh processor is slow..but no problem....

I don't understand why so many people complain about the absence of the secondary camera...
What is the use of this camera? video-call, only! How often do you use video-call? Can't you just use a normal call? what extra info gets through when the other person sees you in a tiny screen?

nice phone but have some drawbacks,it has no secondary cam,cam sounds cannot b set 2 silent,have only a single speaker for speaking,listening,etc...and remaining everything is 5n.......

No, there's no 2.2 update for it, and judging by the time it's taken to get 2.1, I would guess the phone will be so outdated.
It already is outdated, due to the small screen, and it's resistive tech, virtually zero viewing in sunlight, and it's limited memory space.
Give it a month or two, and something better will appear, it always does happen, when you want something.
