Anyway people, there is now somewhere on GSM Arena (at last!) to post for the ZTE Blade. Ignore the postings there that are dated in June as this forum only came on line today.

The ZTE Blade now has it's own page on GSMArena.
Now we can list our posts there !

HAHA!
The saying should go as:
Problem exists between chair and keyboard!
Freefaller, don't take it so hard. I've been using computers for 20 years also (and a spectrum for 2 or 3 extra) and I too get stumped sometimes.
In win7, if something doesn't work, then (1) it wasn't designed to work under win7 (not the case here, since people have managed); (2) requires the setting "run as administrator"; (3) you're using some strange stripped version of windows that doesn't like what you're trying to do (only a reinstall will do, here. But you say you get the same problem in your daughter's laptop).
You could have a faulty phone... on just that detail. Very odd!
And do yourself a favor and use a "user" account. You don't usually need administrative rights, but viruses do!
Run hitman pro (or something like it) to check for nasties (and toss AVG, please!)

@Freefaller
The sarcasm card is an easy one to play, but had you the time and energy to go back through the near 60+ pages of this thread, you would see the RFB has done nothing but help people, so I'd cut him some slack, if his humour seems a bit "off" to you!
All the guy tries to do is help....I know that he helped me, loads, and I've got 10 years exp with PC's, and 2 years in an IT dept!
Keep up the good work RFB...some of us appreciate you!!!

Between my post this morning and your latest post I have found drivers that install the phone. I had already done a 'manual install', and Device Manager now lists it as an 'Android Phone', but CMR STILL doesn't recognise it.
I think the problem must lie in the hardware on my PC. That is another problem, there is no 'standard' for PC's. I've seen this in the past, programs that will load on my PC won't load on another, and vice versa.
I've also tried on my laptop that used XP, and my daughter's laptop with W7 to no avail.
I guess I'm just stuck with the Orange crap.

I know that gsmarena doesn't have a page for the ZTE Blade, but you're generating a bit too much off-topic conversation...
BTW, Sony-ericsson X8 is now available in Portugal at approximately the same price as the GT540.
Also running android 1.6. Anyone know if there is an update for Eclair for the X8?
Look what I did?! Spam!! :(

OK, here is the problem. CMR won't recognise the pho... more@ Freefaller,
Did you do a manual install, and "update" drivers for the HSUSB, pointing them towards the folder where you downloaded the now extracted drivers?
the problem is that some people have to do a manual install, not automatic..sometimes the first part works, then the second doesnt, so manual is the way to go.
in some cases, both dont work, and its the OS fault, as it seems to be random, and the only common denominator seems to be the OS.(apart from drivers)
Just tested on my laptop, and manual works fine, for both, as my system wouldnt recognise either, using manual install, and jsplace drivers, following these steps:
1. Open device manager and right click on The exclamation (Think it says HSUSB?)
2. Select Update driver
3. When asked to search select no and browse to the folder where you extracted the files. Select next and driver will be installed.
4. Repeat step 3 for the other HSUSB device with exclamation.
5. Reboot into bootloader, rinse and repeat.
As to your comment from that jailbird OW, if you can't differentiate humour from sarcasm, there is no hope.
Sarcasm would have been if i said, something sarcastic, instead of laughing, at the comment of "20 years pc use", as the length of time of pc use constitutes nothing really, as you will no doubt find from some useless IT twats, who have worked for many years with pc's, yet some still know nothing.
All i have ever done is help, as at the start of this topic, no-one bothered their asses, TBH.

OK, here is the problem. CMR won't recognise the phone bcause the phone doesn't load the correct drivers. Using Device Manager I can see that there are 2 HSUSB devices not loaded. I have downloaded the ZTE drivers from Modaco. They will install the driver for the first HSUSB device (the phone modem), but will not install the driver for the second HSUSB. That is the problem other users are having. Without that, CMR will not recognise the phone.
On you second comment, I will quote this:
"Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, invariably used in the absense of intelligence" - Oscar Wilde.
Please don't do it!
