mangbhoy, 13 Nov 2010premise: This is a mid-priced phone Excuse the non-techn... moreThis is £300 at cpw. San Francisco on orange is better value. At £110 you get slightly slower processor but i think better screen. Defy should have 1gig processor at this price. Worth £200 only i feel. Still just my opinion. Motorola make nice phones this no exception just too costly at the moment. It has to be noted until recently you could buy a galaxy s from o2 for £320 gone up to £350, still a better deal i feel though than this phone on price though.

premise: This is a mid-priced phone
Excuse the non-technical review
1.) External looks - It's a "Lifeproof" phone and not something that you'd want a phone thief to want - which is good. Imo, it doesn't have the "wow" factor but it does have the "mmmnn! I see" factor.
The phone feels good on the hands and provides good grip. But even if it slips off your hand, you won't really worry about it :)
2.) Display - Above average in darkness, visible in sunlight, it's fun texting in the rain as well!
Just finished watching Iron Man and Iron Man 2 on this baby and it's awesome because of the 3.7 screen size!
Games are fun to play too!
3.) Sound - I have no problems in hearing voice calls and I've been asked by my friends a couple of times if I was at home making the calls when in fact I was out on the streets of London.
Don't expect the best audio quality from the speakers of a mobile/smartphone and this is true with the Defy. You can always plug in your headphones/headset or Bluetooth your way to personal audio bliss.
4.) Features/Speed - Swyping, navigating and browsing is an ease. Installing and uninstalling is a breeze. Don't give me that 'it ain't a 1GHz processor' please. It's a nifty Android powered tease!
5.) Battery Life - Fully charged at 8am. Then I'd normally listen to tunes on the commute, make at least 10 calls (minimum 2 minutes per call) a day, send at least 30 txts, made a few Facebook status updates and comments. Took it down to the pub after work, took 3 pictures. Back at home, there's still juice on the battery!
Loving it! Worth the pre-order wait!
This is my first smartphone - I'm coming from a Moto RAZR2 V8. Was thinking of getting an HTC Desire but I'm glad that I bought this one and I'm sure this'll last for at least a couple of years!
Next stop! Motomodding :D

I've posted another comment in the past about this phone saying how great phone this is... Well after a week i convinced myself to go out there and buy it! I live in Greece so first thing in next week i 'm gonna find me the best internet deal and order it!
I was at first drawn to it because of it's compactness but as i began to discover what powerhouse this phone is as well i just fell in love with it.
We are talking about HTC Aria/Gratia compactness, maybe a bit thicker but still, 3.7" screen makes up for that. We are also talking about Arm Cortex A8 CPU core supporting ARMv7 instruction set. That almost means a certain Android 2.2 update with full Flash 10.1 support since it also sports a dedicated GPU chip, the PowerVR SGX530 which is more powerful even from the GPU chipsets found on Snapdragons, Adreno 205.
The fact that it's a rugged phone wasn't such a big deal for me at first, but after rethinking it it occurred to me that i 'm not going to use a case/pouch with this phone ever. I'm gonna be taking it with me anywhere, in my pocket or bag, along with any other of my staff such as keys and not worry about any scratches. I will be leaving it on any table, beach sand, next by the pool or at the side of my bed and not worry about any water spilling on it or falling down and break.
About the battery now, it says that it has a standby of 242 hours. Well for me it's ok. I believe that translates into 2 days of normal/light use. It's not like i can't get my hands on a power plug or a USB port in two days.
Finally let's talk about price. Who could of thought that such a great phone would only cost around 370 euros. Not me anyway! I had my eye on the HTC Gratia before, a very compact phone with Android 2.2 but after i found out that it will be hitting the market at the price of 400 euros i was disappointed. I mean it's a nice mid-range phone but it's ARM11 CPU and Adreno 200 GPU just doesn't worth that much. I could get an HTC Aria for 300 euros instead and wait for an Android 2.2 update but still, the difference in hardware from Defy and the fact that it won't support Flash 10.1 was a deal breaker for me!
Well that's my thoughts about this phone, if i went wrong about anything feel free to correct me and thanks for reading :-) !

***Left-handers across the world, take heed***
First i'll dive into the goods about 2.1.
Although its not 2.2, this is still an excellent option. Swype texting is good (although the phone still has trouble sometimes interpreting any words with two consecutive letters of the same kind such as guess or spell). 3G coverage is great in my area (USA, South Texas). App installation and uninstall are a breeze (i say this because my former phone was a BB 9700). This device can also be used as a mass storage device. Web browsing is good too. 3G coverage and a decent processor makes for quick webpage rendering. Speakerphone is GREAT on here. Crystal clear voice from both sides of the conversation.
The Body: The phone feels solid in your hand. There are no loose parts on here at all. I purposely dropped it three different times from about 3-4 feet up during my one week of ownership. No markings on it yet, however i have no intentions of purposely dropping it anymore. I also did my personal water-resistant test by placing the phone under a faucet and allowing water to flow on to the screen and battery cover. After drying it off and checking any corners or slits on the phone, it remained dry.
***Do not confuse the terms water-resistant and water-proof***
I have seen various videos of ppl submerging the Defy into swimming pools or large glasses of water. I'm pretty sure those phones were not theirs to keep.
My personal Con to this phone:
I understand that alot of android devices are not made for left-handed individuals like myself. I am mainly speaking of the camera app. When i go to take a pic, naturally i want to rotate the phone clock-wise. I can't take a pic that way at all, so i have to flip it to the "right" way (pun intended). I discover that ALL of the on-screen options are on the right side. Even the onscreen tap to take a picture is on the upper right side. When i am holding my phone in the default landscape mode with my left hand, my index finger lands perfectly on the volume keys and my middle finger perfectly blocks the lens and flash:

After some online research, i ran into XDA developers that have ONE possible remedy for this but nothing solid. Can any lefties or developers get past this?

Defy is available now at most carphone warehouse and vodafone stores. Expected in tmobile from 15th.
Best phone ive ever used. Connected media player is ace, synced with my itunes and displays lyrics automatically like a kareoke machine. Fantastic live 'happenings' from my social networks.
2.1 is perfect for device, you wouldnt notice a difference with 2.2. Theyve already stuck 3g mobile hotspot on it, aswell as dlna and a data manager. This phone impresses the hell out of me!
Dropped it in the sink, no problem. Even video record under water. Amazing!

Got the DEFY today in Switzerland, unbranded, white (although I ordered black). Nice feel, lightweight, great quality. A phone for which I no longer need a case, thank you Motorola.
