Akshay Devgan, 14 Feb 2011This phone has nice features on paper, but to all INDIAN us... moreAnd one most important thing, which I skipped before was MotoBlur UI-----Pinch to zoom----Multi-touch are three different features of this handset, who have no concern with each other.

And Motorola Service centre's are easily available in INDIA,have you ever visited Motorola's web-site view the ASC location's over there,so you need not to travel for 100 of miles for that.

I have owned b... moreHey Akshay, I'm using my Defy handset since a week now and haven't face such kind of issue's, might you may own service centre's but Defy was recently launched in India, so I dont think that you might be getting complaint's for defy handset, the battery back-up for my handset is normally more than 20 hrs. with heavy usage of GPRS or Wi-Fi.

The handset do have pinch-to-zoom and good battery back-up so please don't say Defy is not a better handset than samsung 'cos you never know when Samsung discontinues it's newly launched handset's.

I don't think so that you have ever contacted MotoAssist India 'cos if you ask them for the Froyo upgrade they will just tell you the handset can be upgraded to Froyo, but as soon as compatible software will be launched in India, so don't talk foolish,'cos it's a very nice handset in this range with such unique features.

                    Dead pixel: none.

Battery life: the BEST among all the Android smartphones I've used so far, including Milestone, XT701, XT720 (with the same size screen), or even Cliq, Backflip, Quench, or Flipout with (much) smaller screen.

Multi-touch is ALWAYS available and ALWAYS works.

And I doubt the voice quality of Galaxy beats that of Defy. If voice quality isn't important, then why one doesn't simply get the Galaxy Tab?

Defy offers 1.2GB memory to store apps, not to mention app2SD will be available on the 2.2 upgrade.

XT720 only has 150mb memory to store apps.

Anyone has been playing around with Android should know how limited one can do with 150mb memory to store apps...

Some facts which you got wrong:
                          #Pinch to zoom- definitely available
#Battery- pretty good. Seems better to use than other 'smart phones'
                          Processor- is pretty fast too!

The Motorola DEFY is a terrible phone with too many bugs. Froyo update is not anywhere to be seen, and I don't think it will be available at all. Motorola has nice hardware, but software problems are too much and after sometime even hardware begins to fail.

Anonymous, 14 Feb 2011 in reply to all your concerns.. which proves you are eithe... moreNeither a moto hater, nor a Samsung fanboy. I have owned both phones, AND i own a mobile phone service center of all brands.

                                  1. Dead pixels.. search this comments page, there have been about 2 or 3 mentions of dead pixels from DEFY users who didn't know what the "unchanging green dot" was on their screen.

                                  2. Froyo .. I talked to Motorola India myself, as many customers asked me this same question if the update will be available. Motorola said NO, even if the rest of the world gets Froyo for DEFY later this year, Motorola INDIA is not getting an update anytime soon.

                                  3. Pinch to zoom does not exist on the DEFY. Multi-touch stops working randomly.

                                  4. Li-Po has greater recharge cycles than a Li-On, BUT it holds charge for a shorter period of time. Many DEFY users complain of battery lives less than 12 hours.

                                  5. Ace is 14,900 whereas the DEFY is 18,000. Both DEFY and Ace record @ QVGA, but the Samsung Image Sensor is far more advanced than the DEFY sensor.

                                  6. Very few Motorola service centers in Metros, and NONE outside of metros. Not everyone in India lives in Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, or Delhi.

                                  7. I have never seen a Samsung Galaxy S perform as poorly as any Motorola phone.

Samsung is the best selling smart phone brand in India, but still in our mobile service center we receive more malfunctioning Motorola sets than Samsung.

                                    1. dead pixel no idea until now no one has reported .

2.yes definetely you are getting an update for defy in q2 of 2011 may be delayed looking at moto history but it sure to get.

3.multi touch is definetly there motoblur is no way concerened to multi touch.

4.get your facts right li-po i superior to li-ion and no its not less htan 1000 mAh li-po has more recharge cycle than li-ion.

                                    5. its lot better than ace which is same price band as defy, its video recording in qvga.

6.motorola service centres are good in metros dont know in other places.

                                    7. my cousin owns a galaxy S it hangs too .. with 1ghz humming bird processor . so its not a big issue.
over all moto is not a winner but samsung is a definite loser i think lg is better than samsung.

This phone has nice features on paper, but to all INDIAN users be sure you understand that not all the features listed under "specifications" of this page will be available on your phone. The biggest lacking feature is the MOTOBLUR UI which is not present in DEFYs bought in India. There are other inherent problems with this phone which I will list here.
1 - DEAD PIXELS!! Unfortunately this phone is plagued with dead pixels. You may not see them right away, but after a few months of use they are bound to appear. The screen may be large, and high definition, but the quality of the panel is very poor.
2 - NO update to 2.2 Froyo. There is a way to update it now, but you will have to root your DEFY, hence void the warranty. Motorola doesn't seem to be on the verge of releasing an official update anytime soon.
3 - Multi-Touch is not available due to the lack of Motoblur.. so forget about pinch to zoom!
4 - Battery is a 1500 mAh Li-Po which is equivalent to about 1000mAh Li-On. This phone gets about half the amount of battery life as the Samsung Galaxy Ace or Samsung Galaxy 551, because Samsung uses Li-On batteries.
5 - Camera Quality is VERY poor compared to Samsung phones.
6 - Hanging .. this phone has been known to hang with minimal applications open. Even with it's 800Mhz processor and 512 mb ram, it is very very slow to use. Opening some basic applications can take up to 20 seconds!
7 - Customer Service... Motorola service centers are unheard of in India. If you have a problem with your DEFY, you will have to deal with it using customer support over the phone... OR you will have to drive hundreds of miles to find a service center. Samsung service centers are present in every tiny city in India, even villages.

Overall, Samsung phones are the clear winner here. Even the much cheaper Samsung Galaxy 3 is a smarter purchase, because of the quality and build of the product. There is a reason why Samsung is the leading distributor of smart phones in India today. Motorola is not even in the top 5.
