About the V360: bought mine "fresh out of the owen" with almost 250$. My carrier than had it a month latter on offer for 75$!
About the V8:
I finnaly figured out what it is:
An urban phone. It is not tought out for long forays into the wild(away from power outlets) as it doesn't have the autonomy to cut it. But it will do a night out in town just like that(shiny sexy fashion concious phone, designed to work in noisy enviroments, eyecatching :D favorite club, here we come).
Yet, under all it's party tricks, you still find some capable features as mobile phones go!
Still, I wish it had a little more juice in the battery! I wonder if the beefier V9 battery works with the V8.

I'm probably an old cake here, as I read through comments on another forum regarding certain phone having some echo problems, and some commented "oh, I checked everything else on the phone...such as cam, music player, etc...EXCEPT I didn't even make a phone call to find out about the echo problem..."
To me, the first thing I test on a phone is to make a call to my friend to ensure talk quality is good. What is the use of a "phone" if it can't even provide basic clear conversation?
Indeed reception on V8 is among the best of my recent Moto phones.
Good reception and good voice quality should be the "key" factors for a "phone", as everything should be extra...

I've had a Motorola V360 for almost 3 years now. After that much time of use and abuse, the little plastic toy was still going strong, but it's age was begining to show! So i've been toying with the idea of buying a new phone for the past couple of months.
The basic requirments were: good call capability, great build quality (the little 360 was of great build for it's cheap, plastic self, even better than some more expensive Nokias and Sony-Erricsons), and music capability.
Initially I looked at the E8, the quirky looks and great music-player capaibilities the reviews said it had were very attractive. But the users that said it was kinda slow made me think twice.
Then, last week, I caught this great offer on a V8-512MB (25$ + 1 year renewal of my current carrier contract), and I pounced on it imeadiately.
And after a week of using the phone, I must say I've started to get attached to it. It packs enough features for me, it has the WOW factor, and it's speed racer fast (on my old V360 I could text faster than it could receive input and it would slow down to a crawl...no such problem with the V8).
So, pluses (IMO) of the V8:
+package came complete with all the accesories you could need, including cloth pouch for carrying and cables and software
+looks... the phone is a definate stunner when it comes to looks, you need to hold it and see it for yourself in real life to realise how much it resembles a piece of art.
+ hardware... while it is a pretty boy on the outside, the V8 packs a mean punch on the inside: the ARM11 CPU + Linux based OS (if I understand correct) make it one of the fastest phones i've used. The two screens are great for everyday use and the touch-keys on the exterior display make it very easy to use as a mp3 player(the sound is also great for it's class).
+build quality is above the rest. I haven't used a phone in it's current price bracket (200-300$ free without contract) that has the same feel to it.
+phone above the rest... call quality = great (haven't used it while talking to someone with another Crystal Talk phone...quite curious if there is even more improvement in that combination). Texting = great once you get used to the keyboard.
On the downside:
-battery life... biggest drag, only got 3 days out of mine at the rate I'm using it. The V360 still pulls 4 days with around the same amount of use. If you've got a PC near you though, you can charget it via an usb->micro-usb cable.
-memory size... if you plan to use it as an mp3 player you'll need the 2GB version
-underused "touch screen"... they could have used it in more applications, not just the music player!
-camera...2 MP without AutoFocus is usable only for "social snaps" in decent light.
My final 2 cents:
If you're looking for a phone that combines great build quality, great looks, great call capabilities and an good music player, and you are willing to live with the short battery life and the sub-mediocre camera, than you should take the V8 for a spin. As a friend of mine who is a Nokia fan said to me when he saw the V8: "Motorolas have this quality that you can actually get emotionally attached to them. No other phonemaker has this quality!"

Again, this phone has 2 mons...one at 2.2 inch and the other at 2.0 inch.
If you can find any other phone with 4.0 inch mon with better battery life than V8, please let me know.

Battery life is bad. I addressed this with t mobile before purchasing the phone- rep assured me that they would replace battery if I was dissatisfied with it's performance. 1st charge took 2 hours and phone stopped charging. Have had to recharge every night. Called t mobile for replacement battery within the 30 day limit for "free" replacement battery and order was never processed. Have to buy new battery now. Battery does not even last a day now. I do not use the phone much- no internet, MP3's etc. Just short calls. T mobile and motorola really dropped the ball on this one.

I actually made the same mistake with my 2GB version when I first got the phone, then I called Moto support in my local area and the person told me to plug the phone to a computer via USB cable, then the computer should show "2" drives, and one of them is the "smaller" one and the other is the 2GB one.
Try the above and let me know the result.

Anonymous, 18 Mar 2009Please don't humor me with your inane observations. There a... moreMy V8 was purchased through authorized distributor, indeed being one of, if not the top, electronics chain in HK.
Most other CHAIN shops only sell OFFICIAL Moto products being distributed by MOTO HK only.
So if you want to insult me being insane with my observation, suggest you come over to my place and take a look at my V8, or take the IMEI and see if it's covered by official warranty in HK. (Warranty actually is good in Macau, Taiwan and mainland China)
If you can't prove you're wrong, then your statement regarding OFFICAL V8's being sold in HK don't have the problems you mentioned doesn't stand.
Personally I do suspect the same phone model being sold at different countries may be manufacturered at different locations, hence perhaps with slightly different quality.
Indeed, some places like US, the mobile operator (?-mobile) would install its own software to the phones they sell and eventually causes much more quality problems than phones being sold elsewhere.
When you said you read thousands of complaints about V8, do they all come from Asia/China region?
My point is, from my limited obseration among phone forum in HK, I haven't heard the problems you mentioned on your V8. (same holds true for other models like E8...dozens of complaints here from everyone else around the world, while most users in HK are rather happy) Hence I was just suggeting you to get an OFFICIAL V8 from HK and see if you encounter the same problems.
If you get an OFFICIAL Moto V8 from HK and the problems you mentioned do NOT persist, you probably need to apologize regarding your stereotype about all phones being sold in HK are craps / knock-offs from mainland China, because the fact is we do sell OFFICIAL Moto products with good (if not better) quality (than other markets)

There are tons of unauthorized and modified luxury editions of the V8 as well as many other phones. We all know the origin of most of them is China, no one is suggesting otherwise. My V8 was an official Motorola phone, that is why I feel I have the pedigree to discuss quality control of the phone. As for my issues with the keypad: this is a common issue that effects thousands of users. There are tons of complaints online for just the same problem.

Anonymous, 17 Mar 2009I had all the same problems with my luxury edition as well.... moreMaybe you should consider to get a "genuine" V8 from China (Hong Kong in particular, where you can easily request the salesperson to set the menu back to English), as most of the "technical" issues you reported have "never" been any issue for any V8 user in HK.
Charging port cover design is a flaw I do admit, as I also have V9 and find the design on V9 being slightly better.
For battery power, if you often drive, may I suggest you simply charge the phone whenever you're in your car?

I got it back in January of 2008 purchased from the U.K. I can confirm that the phone was a genuine 100% Motorola and not a Chinese aftermarket mod. The first issues I experienced were with the keypad, at first it was unresponsive, but it quickly changed to the keypad being completely unstable. For example I would try to type a letter or a number and get something completely different. Navigating the menus sometimes yielded the same results. I would go to search for a particular name in my phonebook, but it would keep going back to the same letter/name. The next issue was with the cover on the mini-usb port coming apart. Then the issue of the moisture bubble under the inside screen. Then it was the glue starting to erode and leaking into the phone itself. Then I started getting this issue with the clock losing two minutes every week which was really annoying. Then the final straw was the frame cracking in the rear just above the battery cover near the right hinge. All the while getting 2 hours of maximum talk time from the battery. I was charging the battery three times a day at some point. But that was partially due to the fact that my car would connect to my phone via bluetooth automatically. Aside from that there is no way to check missed calls on the front screen? Great looking phone, but implementation leaves much to be desired.

Beware! In December 2007, I upgraded to the V8 Luxury Gold edition, and have had nothing but problems wit the key pad. I am on my 3rd one in 12 months. The menu is erratic (you select messages for example and it gives you the phonebook), the battery life shocking (all 3 phones last about 6 hours from a full charge, and no the bluetooth is not activated), moisture gathers in the main screen and leaves water marks and when you take it back, the sales man accuses you of spilling something on it (but I keep mine in a leather case). The list goes on! Used Motorola for 12 years, and this was a true let down. Great looking phone, but reliability is appalling! Just upgraded to the new Blackberry, so will see how that pans out!

If not because of my latest preference to choose only bar or slide design phones, I wouldn't have changed from V8 to E8. Yes I got what I wanted and maybe with a little bit more with E8 BUT I also missed a few good things about V8 until today. Notably, the voice quality, the signal reception and the smoothness of the system are better than E8, eventhough E8's voice quality is already better than other makes without Crystaltalk technology. I found out another way to test out the background noise cancellation of Motorola phones with Crystaltalk is via bluetooth headset device. If you're at a noisy place talking with your bluetooth headset, tell the other party you're talking to to observe the difference on the background noise level when you switch back to your phone mode. It worked each time I performed the test and my friends were impressed. Well, I've got let my V8 go and look forward to other Motorola phones with bar & slide design on my next upgrade, which might not happen so soon. But truly, despite some negative feedbacks on V8 on battery issue at his forum, personally I found V8 to be a good phone with outstanding voice quality and reception. We human are adaptive, if we're able to adapt and "manage" the battery charging aspect of it, there's no other issue to it.
