Sandra, 15 Sep 2008i wonder if the 2gb version is thicker than the 420mb one ?!Sandra,

It's the same in thickness but there are two versions of 2GB available - Luxury version, gold plated and normal version. The price is much higher in the Luxury version so it all depends on what you are looking for.

Since the V8 is thinner than V9, it can't use the V9's battery otherwise the talk time would be better. Look at the V8's back page reviews, another reviewer under the name EMS06 has purchased the high capacity battery for V8 and the battery cover that comes with it. It's 1380Mah vs. 740Mah so the talk time will be impressive. Only thing is the battery cover is slightly thicker because the battery is also slightly thicker, something which the V8 can spare since it's so thin.

I have the razr2 v8 and I love it. The call quality is bar none and the phone itself is solid.

Both screens are top notch. My only complaints are the battery life could be a bit better and the voice dialing system could be a bit better. Otherwise it's perfect.

Gerard, 13 Sep 2008Stuart, I believe that youre new phone is a bit bette... moreGerard,

Initially you didn't specify ROKR E8 as your choice so I did not want to say much about it. No doubt I'm a Motorola fan but I believe in freedom of choice so I thought you'll be selecting either V9 or a Samsung model.

E8 - a specialized music phone running on Linux with memory card extension (unofficially up to 8GB, officially 4GB). Built in memory is bigger than V8 (2GB vs. 512 MB). After using it for a short while now, I'm quite used to & like the morphing, tactile keypads and the screen brightness is much better. Screen is slightly smaller but OK for me. Music quality from speaker is better than V8, liked the radio, but incoming voice quality lost to V8 (ear to phone listening quality). Strangely, outgoing voice quality feedback from the other side said my voice is clearer than when I was using V8 and same goes to bluetooth headset too, still needed time to digest this. Battery life is much better than V8 (970Mah vs. 740Mah)and noticed very slight lag on some commands at times unlike the V8, smooth and fast. Now with E8, I've found operating my phone with one hand much easier especially while carrying bag, documents, folders and so on. My switched to E8 is satisfactory so far and would like to wait & see when the ZN5 launches in my country. I wanted a quality phone now without 3G, with Crystal Talk and Linux so it has to be Motorola - that's why E8.

My suggestion, there are other phone model reviews here at GSMArena, take a look at some of your shortlisted ones to see what are the frequent, similar problems raised under the same phone by users. Analysis on a phone is very subjective and different with every individuals. If you like a particular phone, tell yourself not to be bias when reading the reviews instead be neutral in your approach. I've actually scrapped one particular model which I've shortlisted before after looking thru its reviews from users here, magazine and checked that out at some shops myself. Don't be misled by nice body design but when you hold it, it feels plasticky. It is your call Gerard, you'll get there and becomes a better phone user or critic as time goes.

Gerard, 13 Sep 2008Stuart, I'm still searching for the other types of V8's... moreGerard,

The 2nd type of cover is the same price as the first one. Whether in your country it's available or not depends on the retailers.

I bought my ROKR E8 at approx. USD 280. I saw you've actually shortlisted a few phone models for your next upgrade - that's good. Do you actually need & use 3G? If you do, then go for it, if not, don't include 3G in your selection. It will consume more battery. I've got another 3G phone too but never utilized this feature due to its cost. For the other Samsung models, do your research, try out the actual phone quality at the shop and check out their goods & bads. You won't be able to get 100% good reviews so if you see a 90/10, 80/20 or even 70/30 (good/bad ratio), I feel it's already good enough. Final say still depends on you. Good luck.

My heart goes out to you, money spent but can't claim warranty unfortunately. You're definitely a reasonable guy based on your constructive comment.

I usually purchase all my phones from the local authorised importer eventhough the "unauthorised" phones were cheaper. As you know, the unauthorised phones are actually from the same factory but were meant for other countries so for the sake of warranty, personally I don't mind paying more and true enough, both my V8's claims were honoured.

Do give us more feedback on any new phones you are or have been using, Thanks

I assume my unit was indeed a lemon as there is no way Motorola would release such a shoddy product into the market considering the lifeline of their cell phone division was the Razr namesake. Having said that, reviews are individual and not general overviews of the phone as there are many "professionals" who review phones. I can only comment on my personal experience with the V8. Having owned two already I find myself to be more than entitled do give accurate and honest reviews of the unit/units I have used. My reviews and experience with the Motorola V3i was far more positive. To be honest with you, I would be ecstatic if they came up with an update to the V600/V620/V635 series. The V635 was glorious. Anyway, I purchased the phone from the UK marketplace and obviously Motorola USA will not honor the warranty.

You must be the unfortunate one. I've got my V8 normal version for about 10 months before selling it off to my close friend recently and he's the one initiated the sale - we meet up quite frequently. When I sold to him, we tested the V8 and everything's in order, no keypad issue, no bubble issue and no "self-off" problem. Nevertheless, I got my micro USB cover and battery cover claimed under warranty during the first 6 months, since then no issue at all.

If I were you, I'll be frustrated too considering this is the Luxury edition. I believe 8 months ownership still entitles you to warranty claim on your keypad or maybe screen problem but I doubt they'll replace your V8's frame. Why not send it in for warranty claim? I just hope that you didn't buy your phone from other countries or via internet.

Since we're at this V8 user's comments site, I was wondering how many other users have been encountering the same.

                        Hi guys,
i am currently using a Motorola L72. I plan to trade it for a this phone (512MB version).

One think I really hate about the L72 is the slow menu and the keypad which get fingerprints mark very quickly!

Also whats the modding capability of this phone?

Is it the same with this phone?

                        Than you.

Had the luxury edition of this phone now for over eight months and the t-mobile version prior. I have made several reviews of this phone, so I will simply provide input on the durability of my current unit:
Physically the phone is in excellent condition, I take good care of my things without being overly cautious or too proactive. I never have and never will use a case. I like to showcase and appreciate the esthetics of the design in it's basic form. I have spots where the gold plating has peeled and chipped away and have had some glue from around the inside screen cover and speaker plate crud up the mesh protecting the earpiece. There is also a visible air bubble underneath the inside screen cover. I have also had the micro-usb port cover come apart. Basically the cover is made up of a rubber piece which inserts into the phone and a plastic piece which is glued to that rubber that matches the phone. The glue was not strong enough and the plastic piece fell off, I just removes the rubber piece and now it is just a large void.
The phone has severe keypad issues and at this point the phone is unpredictable and undependable when using the keypad for any operation whatsoever. Initially I only had issues when texting, but it has progressed to not being able to type a phone number, to the phone getting improper commands from the main menu screen. I have to do the same operation several times now to get the job done. And the phone has caused me to erase pictures, numbers and messages prematurely.
I have noticed that the time on the phone seems to be affected by a malfunction of sorts. Every week my phone seems to be off by two minutes. I really cannot explain nor do I understand this phenomena, but it is what it is. The phone will also randomly shut down, or the phone will lose it's ability to read my sim card temporarily. Sometimes the phone will freeze then display the Motorola logo then it goes black and starts back up.
I cant imagine anyone using this phone without major repairs for four years, yet I do believe it may be possible to do so with a V3i.

grace, 08 Sep 2008do you think this phone will last 4 abt 4yrs? somebody pls... moreGrace,

This is a pretty hard question to answer - 4 years. I believe it is possible, maybe even more than that BUT subject to your personal handling of the phone. There are so many possibilities that could affect the lifespan of any phones (not only V8).
                              - accidents,
                              - frequent droppings of your phone;
                              - water, moisture
                              - frequently storing the phone in higher temperature,
                              etc, etc....

Assuming none of the above happens, then I believe the lifespan would greatly depends on the internal components like electronic circuits and the manufacturing practice at the time YOUR particular unit is assembled and produced in the factory.

Sorry, it's not an accurate answer to your question but hope it helps.

Gerard, 08 Sep 2008To Stuart, My front case covers the whole phone exept ... moreGerard,

Good to hear that you got the covers. Since it's cheap, you can explore further with the 2nd type. I actually bought 2 sets each time just in case it cracks from whatever reason. Right now, I'm still having 2 sets, will be giving that away to my friend (a really really close friend!) as he'll be the new owner to my V8. He's been bugging me to sell my V8 to him so I did - at a really low price due to our friendship for so many years. I still like the v8 though for the overall feel & performance. Got a chance to compare my new ROKR E8 and V8 physically side by side for couple of hours before paasing to him. I have to be really careful this time - no crystal cover for E8 yet available. Thinking back, sometimes I still wonder why I bought the E8. I've been following the reviews on ZN5 but its availability is still uncertain in my country. ZN5 has much more better specs than E8. I guess that's impulse spending. Not bad so far... sound quality is really better, keypad (you either like it or dislike it), candy bar factor (so it's one hand operation for me this time), 2GB memory (probably loading a few series of motivational audios, Robert Kiyosaki, Harv Eker and so on instead of music) & Battery 930 Mah (let's see the performance).

Good luck to your ventures Gerard.
