yes you need to have a headphone connected before you can turn on the fm radio, then you can play it using the loudspeaker.

if you press the music button or the play button, it will direct you to the music files,
there you will be able to browse by playlist, genres, etc...

Do you have to plug in the headphones to listen to the radio? Or does the E2 have an internal radio receiver(anntena)?

The fact that ROKR E2 is the leader is not so suprirising, the phone turned out very successful in all directions (other functions are great as well). But manufacturer is not in a rush to release this model as quickly as possible, it will hit the shelves only in Autumn. At that moment the positions can change, but I still think that the model will remain impressive, it’s jus the competition between already available music phones that will grow, and it is very interesting to say the least (remember that the design will not suit everyone, it’s a mobile phone for young people). Sony Ericsson’s products W800i and W810i are rather interesting as well.As for W900i, this model does not look so appealing when compared to the competitiros, it has low price/quality ratio. The situation is same for Nokia 3250, there is almost 2x gap between the leader and this model. We can always say “hey, it’s a smartphone, it means…” and what just this means exactly? We were comparing only “musical” part of the handset, and this part has been inferior when compared to others. This is why it takes last place in our rankings, this position is well-deserved.

We did not include phones that are coming from higher price segment, but we are already working on another material that will concentrate on those models. It’s just because smartphones have so many issues. Once again I’d like to point out that you can select only those functions, that you actually need, after that try calculating the score again, we clearly described the method. Perhaps some model will become more attractive than others just for you.

For those who are interested in other functions as well, I can advice looking into corresponding reviews, we had a lot of photos of displays, references to realizations of one or other functions. To cut the long story short, you have the stuff what you can read, go on!

Thank god, what an improvement from the old ROKR.

-I love the big 320x240 screen, thats almost as big as my E680i, which means I can watch my movies on this too!

                  - 3.5mm Jack, what a great idea. I wish all music cellphones switch to this. Why mess with tinny sounding headsets, when u can plug in your own headphones & earbuds. Koss!

                  - SD up to 2GB, good move. But I wish there was more built in memory. Like E680i, built in memory is 50mb. Either up the built in memory or allow higher capacity SD cards. But 2GB is more than enough for a day's worth of songs & videos.

                  - Camera is also not bad, could be better, but definitely standard level now. Once again, bigger built in memory would help in this department. No point in having gd cam, but no space to store it in.

                  - Looks: this ROKR looks much better. It looks fun, like a bar of soap or something much friendlier than the E1. No doubt the new curves are so that the side music buttons can be accessed a bit easier, but it does make the whole phone look better. Not so boxy.

I do wish the space allocation for the screen would be better. They should flaunt the 320x240 by framing it nicer, with less empty space at the sides & bottom. SE phones does this better than Moto, as a result their phones look like they have HUGE screens. Look at the wasted space below the screen, they could have made the buttons bigger or moved it up a bit.

But all in all i think its a much better phone than E1 by far. Hope it doesnt hang, and if i were to get it, I'll definitely take the black, since the white looks too much like its failed sibling, E1.

Nice review Drew, and about the speaker being not too loud and the kinda slow interface, you can fix those 2 things by updating your firmware, the newest version (ends with 43P), has a higher volume and it's way faster, you can get it on a forum but I dunno if I'm allowed to post the link in here.

Ok, had this phone for a week now and my verdict, this phone is really good and is one of a kind.

1st, to answer most of u curious buyer's question, yes, the ringtone (played thru loudspeaker) is not loud. it's actually only average and slightly lower than my SE w850i.
It's however still audible especially with certian loud mp3.

2nd, like it's mentioned in "mobile-review.com" The screen is FASTASTIC! Clear, bright, responsive, vivid and colourful.

3rd, as it's using linus OS, do expect it to perform slight "sluggishly",, but i can assure u that it's still faster than any symbian phones out there including n73.

last but not least, sound quality output from E2 is better than any SE walkman series. I had several difference comparison (all using SE's HPM-70 provided by my w850i) using diff genre of music and E2 proved to produced better "highs and lows" in most music.

During the 2nd test, i pluged in a better pair of earphone (creative aurvana) w850i sound better this time but in many occasion just managed to go on par but not better than e2.

I strongly recommend anyone who wants a convergence between mp3 player and mobile phone to try out ROKR e2. However if you would like slightly more function and a batter camera, can try out the new w850i but be prepared to payat least 70% more compared to E2.

this fone really deserves 9 out of ten and is similar in rating for that of sony ericsson W-850i
i have got white one but black is better
                                    i think avg rating 4 this fone= 9.5 out of 10

mobile-review.com rated it as the best music fone
