It seems that the 3 network where ever you all are is just poor, here in Australia it is an extremely reliable and great network!

nokia is poor, this nec phone is great, i have one and have no problems with it. if u do, it is just one of the earliest 3g phones around and nec will make smaller, more efficient longer battary life ones in the future!

I bought two of these NEC phones back in May/June time from Carphone Warehouse. One for me and one for my Girlfriend. We both have had endless problems with these phones... dropping calls, being unable to read texts, dismal battery life etc, etc the list goes on and on. If you are considering one of these phones (not sure if three use them anymore) avoid avoid avoid!!! Get the nokia, my friend has had no problems at all with his.

Also, 3 have to look at your phone at least three times, if its not fixed after that they must give you a new phone, or cancel the contract.

I am starting to wish I had listened to my friends already on the Three network...no wonder they were offering 9 months half price line rental. I get to use about 100 of my 500 minutes due to lack of reception, even though I'm close to a cell site and have recently upgraded the firmware. I can't receive texts, calls drop out, and the handset often crashes for no reason, sometimes mid-call...can't hang up the call or anything...just have to take the battery off.

I have been emailing Three, who acknowledge the handset as sub-standard, but the only thing they have offered is the newer LG phone with a 12 month contract extension...no guarentees its any better...and they're acting like they're doing me a favour! At the end of the day, they obviously didn't test the phone well enough before release, so they should face the consequences. I'm going through the complaint escalation process to either rescind the contract or get the upgrade without contract extension. Next stop Ofcom!

This is a great phone! I have it on the 3 network in Australia and have not had any problems with it. The only dissapointing part is the bluetooth.

I do not think this phone is too big, it is perfect, I have previously had the Samsung E700 and in my opinion that 1 was just way too small and bony.

Battery life is quite poor but who cares if you have to charge it every night, if you need it to last longer just use the extended battery that is supplied.

Great one NEC, like to see more 3G handsets in the future!

This phone is a joke, the keys so small relative to the size of the phone and is hard to push, the battery can't last for one day, worst phone i have ever use.

Nick, I was dissapointed too, this phone is not designed to use its bluetooth for sending and recieving to other phones. It is just for hooking up to a computer or bluetooth headset.

                    Still a great phone though!

I had the NEC 616 in April this year. I liked the look and feel of the phone as it wasn't too dissimilar to my previous phone the samsung t100.
It looked nice, easy to use. About 8 weeks ago i started experiencing problems. Alongside the fact that i was getting 10 hours at most out of my fully charged battery and hardly using my handset, the menu screen kept freezing. I had to remove the battery and replace for the phone to boot back up. It starting dropping calls for no reason. So i called 3 customer services who told me to take it to carphone warehouse for a software upgrade. I had the phone back and it was fine for about 2 weeks. Then, whenever i called someone or they called me.... i could hear them but they couldn't hear me. Again i called 3 and they arranged for the handset to be picked up and repaired. it came back and was the same... a total of 4 times over 2 weeks they had the phone back and the last time i sent a not along with it saying that i did not want this handset.
They sent me a repacement NEC616 followed by a letter offering an upgrade to an LG and a new contract for my inconvenience. Only that they restricted my calls last thursday because i had an outstanding balance that i had told them the day before i would pay on the friday.
I paid my bill in full on friday, was told the restrictions would stay for up to 24hrs. It is now tuesday and still they have not lifted the restrictions despite me phoning several times a day.
I am so close to cancelling my contract with 3 as i am paying for a service i am not receiving.
Oh and the new handset that i was suppose to receive monday (yesterday) i am still waiting for. I have emailed 3 customer services as the communication barrier with their staff is ridiculous. I hope to hear something from then soon as i have not used my phone to make calls for about 6 weeks even though they still charged me for it.

I don't know whether I am lucky or its the firmware,sv12, but I have not had a single problem with this phone.
The only negative thing I have to say is actually about 3 uk, What is the point in making a perfectly capable wap phone only able to access their own sites in a 'walled garden'?

On this phone I can not use bluetooth to hook up to another phone, it is only for hooking up to a headset or PC. Very Disappointing

Oh yes, if you have any serious issues just go to a 3 Point and don't bother with customer services. It can deal with volume but the language barrier is hard to get past when you have real problems. The people in the 3 points (well in the North East anyway)and pretty clued up and have come across most issues. There are answers out there, you just have to talk to the right people, the network would not make such heavy subsidies on handsets and come out with such competetive tariffs if they didn't, ultimatly, want to win custom.

It isn't the network's fault if NEC's handset does not hold it's signal.

The first question is where did you buy your 616? If it was in a 3point then at least you know that the handset you got was new, defiantly unused and will have been near the newest stock available. Often other retailers hold stock for longer so you could get one of the first lot of phones shipped out, even if it was a few months after release.

I got one on the launch day (3/3) and have had loads of problems with it, if you press *#06# it tells you the IMEI followed by SV__. This is the software version, if it is like 01 or even as high as 11/12 then it is the older software. On SV 00 Bluetooth didn't even work at all so there have been quite a lot of developments in the software since then.

The new 228 uses SV 16 (I think) and feedback indicates it doesn't drop calls much at all. The problem is that there are often network glitches and this, coupled with the 2.5-3G switch is made much worse on the NEC handsets.

Sorry if the staff in the 3point told you the wrong thing (your mentioning 3 days indicates you used them) but the latest software has sorted most of the issues out for me. It has got rid of the "initiating"-re-boot issue and I barely get dropped calls now.3 have struck up a deal with the people who do Carphonewarehouse's repair centres so TRS do not have the latest software, the software is being rolled out through Carphone's repair centre, they can do it pretty much while you wait, so 3 think it is more efficient than sending it for 3 Day Repair.

My phone has software version 13 so anything earlier than that may be the cause of the problems.

As for the text messages; I haven't got a clue but bear in mind that the phone doesn't tell you when its (partitioned) memory is full. I often find that deleting all of the sent items and not having many messages in the inbox solves SMS problems. Other than that a re-flash is your best bet for solving these freak faults. Like I said (and the 3 Point staff should know this) sending the 616 for 3Day Repair will not solve any software problems.

Maybe the phones ids just dodgy, in which case; if it is sent for repair 3 times (with the same fault) they generally replace it under warranty; this is up to the technician's discretion (maybe this is why the Manchester staff sent it for repair?).

I hope this is helpful and I haven't made too many typos. Anything I may have said is just in my experience, every case is different.

Ok let me start by saying that this phone is an absolute waste of fucking time and if it werent for me worrying about losing my money I would have thrown it out of the nearest window or stamped on the thing so many times up to now

Where can I start on the faults, Well firstly I shall tell you what has pissed me off since I got it and is pissing me off right this very minute as I type this, My girlfriend is currently texting me as I speak and guess what....the messages vanish as they arrive usually either erasing a previous message which can be anywhere in my inbox or even my sent texts or it just corrupts previous messages and cant be opened at all, marvellous, this has happened for months now with me losing messages

Next thing is the signal and calls, The phone just disconnects a call when there is no prob with the signal whenever it feels like it for no apparent reason, If it isnt doing that then the reception is shocking despite having a full signal on the phone, Ive also had ear piercing noises and major intereference on the line several times which is nice when im trying to do the thing that mobile fucking phones are used for and make phone calls, Also the signal is up and down every 2 minutes in all areas, Constantly when im at work or at home or wherever I may bloody be the signal vanishes totally suddenly or goes up and down repeatedly no matter how well serviced the area is, Absolute joke

Those are the main things but I may aswell also throw in the shite battery life and also the times when the phone decides to switch itself on and off for no reason

Overall I have NEVER had a phone that has got me so angry I simply want to smash it to pieces like this one, Ive sent it back once already for 3 days and had it come back exactly the same, This time around they are having it back for good I dont care what they try and tell me, DO NOT TOUCH THIS SHIT PHONE WITH A BARGEPOLE

Hi, I recentley purchased a second hand nec e616 and I am having problems on other networks. I have a Optus Pre-paid simcard (Melbourne, Australia)and on the occasion it cuts out and resets, searching for another network (presumably the 3 network). How can I stop this from happening? If anyone knows post on here or email me, greatly appreciate it.. thankyou.
