iPhone 3GS plays 1080p video, enjoys sound of jaws dropping

21 August, 2009
The iPhone is making it really hard not to like it - apparently the latest generation of iPhones - the speedy 3GS can play 1080p video. Yep, 1080p. The software is not fully ready yet but the hardware is. So, are we...

[deleted post]And you need to learn to calm down. This is something that's good to know, especially for iphone users. I don't know why you're so upset over this, lol. I have no intentions of watching movies on my iphone or any phone for that matter. But it's good to know that I can save an hd movie on my iphone and connect it to my tv & watch it in hd quality.

Brenda, 21 Aug 2009Ummm, Apple is not really pushing for this. Did you read t... moreYeah that's the thing, I don't really find this revolutionary. A lot of tech companies have blown HD out of proportion. Granted that they're looking for the next best thing, they still gimmick the product out with the over-hype. Adding HD for Youtube was the last straw for me (besides snotty comments and rick-rolls. Samsung HD is also another over-hype. Apple is just canon-fodder for this, and GSMArena is fuel for the fire.

Speaking of which, I have been seeing some bias towards iPhone recently, but come on people, don't act like GSMA only favors Apple. If you go to the homepage and look over at the reviews, tell me all the 4 that are there (and don't tell me it's cause they just were released).

Lastly, what are the hell are you people droning on and on about the battery life for? It's only the fact the battery can't be removed w/o Apple Care that you're starting this nonsense. I've been using this phone on intervals of 3G and 2G and I've got an average of 11 hrs consecutive battery life (My battery is still the one I got when I first bought the damn thing). If you don't own the product, for the love of God don't spread around some of the noobiest stuff I've heard (today).

Anonymous, 21 Aug 2009wow you have no idea what you're freaking talking about, Ap... moreYou do not make sense. Apple computers support flash. Iphone's OS is utilizing Mac's OS, so it can Support flash as well if Apple wanted it to. Apple’s terms-of-service agreement simply prohibits it. Adobe flash will be gone in two years anyway.

The iphone has juice packs in case you go low on battery. It doubles, others triples, the battery life of the iphone.

Unfortunately, iPhone screen resolution is only 480x320.
There is really no point to play 1080p on the iPhone. We should convert to lower resolution and lower bitrate to save battery life.

It's funny to play 1080p on iPhone unless we want to deplete battery quickly.

Symbian 5th is better at 640x360, and WM 6.x support 800x480, but it's still nonsense to play 1080p on those devices, let alone iPhone.

It would be make sense only if using HDMI port which iPhone doesn't have.

Anonymous, 21 Aug 2009i wonder if the difference will be really noticeable at all... moreUmmm, Apple is not really pushing for this. Did you read the article? The news is just telling you that the iphone is capable of playing HD videos. It's not saying that this is the new best thing for the iphone. As for flash support, it's been explained many times already that Apple does not want to support Adobe's proprietary plug ins to protect their developers and interests as well. As for watching movies on the iphone, I agree with you. If video quality really matters to you, wait till you get home and watch it on a big screen plasma tv, or at least your laptop. That's why I don't get the Samsung HD hype either.

So, do you replace the batteries on your Nokia phones when thr battery goes low? Lol.

This isn't really a huge surprise. The Samsung i8910 is running on the same CPU and already has 720p playback running on it. It may even support higher bitrates, but I haven't tried. It would only make sense that the iPhone could do the same with the right software.

Questions..Is this a firmware update, or is it gonna be in all of the upocming 3Gs' (because I'm selling mine =/). On that note, how much will this "ready" add-on add to the price? Lastly, is it worth it for ANY mobile phone company to add HD to their phones (what's the point? next thing you know they'll be HD on that watch phone of yours, because who doesn't need HD on a watch phone?)?
