iPhone 3GS plays 1080p video, enjoys sound of jaws dropping

21 August, 2009
The iPhone is making it really hard not to like it - apparently the latest generation of iPhones - the speedy 3GS can play 1080p video. Yep, 1080p. The software is not fully ready yet but the hardware is. So, are we...

Anonymous, 22 Aug 2009Ha, has nothing to do with iphones battery life. WAKE UP. ... moreI think you're thinking way ahead here. No one here is saying that this is an official iphone feature. The news only states the capabilities of the iphone's hardware to be able to play HD videos. That's all. This article does not tell anyone to start using your iphone as an HD player, BUT, it tells us that it's possible, and that we might get higher resolution on the next gen iphone 4g.

It's actually nice to know that the iphone has the potential to store and play HD videos. Which means, with the right cable, you can hook it up to your HD tv and enjoy HD quality videos.

Anonymous, 22 Aug 2009I am an iPhone fan but this is the dumbest article ever....... moreI totally agree with you. If it was a WVGA screen I might understand 720p, but 1080p on a HVGA screen?!

I know these news are about making the iPhone a "portable media player", which is great if you carry all the cables you need all the time and assume people have no DVD/BlueRay players. Mind you, a video the size of 1080p @ 30Mbps would fill up the iPhone's 32GB in no-time.

It's great that the iPhone "can" do this, but it's just a "show-off" feature rather than being of any real use.

HD engr, 21 Aug 2009Also it is just another hype because Apple is afraid of the... moreHahahaha. Apple afraid of Zune? Zune has been trying so hard to catch up with ipod's sales for years now, and everyone's been imitating and trying to catch up with the iphone as well, lol. You're so full of it. And really? Why would HD be a big deal? I'm not saying that it's wrong to have it on a device, but why would that be the selling point of a device with a 3.5 or 4.0 display? Most people don't buy phones so they can watch movies with it. Most people don't think resolution and HD when buying phones. That's something you seriously consider when you buy your 50 inch flat screen tv, not when you're buying a smartphone.

You said that windows is still working on that fluid UI for winmo 7. Well guess what? The iphone and the ipod touch has already been enjoying their fluid UI for 3 years now honey.

HD engr, 21 Aug 2009Ditto. Just another hype to keep iphone fanboys hope(less) ... moreAnother hype? What are you talking about? This news didn't even come from Apple. Obviously, this news indicates that the iphone hardware can potentially play HD videos, and that is all that they're saying, so who are you to say otherwise? This article also has nothing to do with Omnia, so why are you dragging the Omnia into this? Also, this has nothing to do with the iphone's battery life or the iphone not having a removable battery, so why are even bringing those up? I think you're just a bitter Samsung fanboy :)

Again, no one is forcing you to like or buy the iphone. It's really simple my dear. Too simple actually. If a device does not have the features that you need, don't buy it and stay away from it and don't be bitter if other people likes it when you don't :)

[deleted post]Read their review on the symbian touch interface... No good. Not biased they just know what's good. Nokia has some top phones out their, the iPhone is an excellent phone and they have also spoken of the excellent LG phones currently being released... They are not biased just they say whats good and whats bad and you don't get the iPhone so you bag it. As for the article, I Personally couldnt care less! If the actually phone screen resolution was 1080p then I would (wont happen) otherwise ill stick to using my computer and blue ray player for HD

Also it is just another hype because Apple is afraid of the soon to lose war with MicroSoft's coming Zune HD that CAN play real HD video in NATIVE 720p resolution. And the next windows mobile 7 version is specifically tweaked for Zune HD's sweet fluid like UI. So I am sticking to winmo, android or the soon to be verified maemo OS. iphone OS will be playing catch up in the next coming years, lol.

Just another hype to keep iphone fanboys hope(less) a bit more until the truth comes out: NO IT CAN NOT PLAY REAL HD video because of those fore mentioned statements. AGAIN no HD screen (and worse not even have the awesome AMOLED high resolution screen like Omnia II or HD), slower CPU (vs. 800MHz from Omnia phones) and a sucky bad battery that can NOT be REPLACED, hahaha.

Just another hype like when I called H.Q Apple technical support here locally in California, when the very first iphone just came out about if it had video and real voice guidance turn by turn GPS, he said there WILL be a software update by the end of the year '07, guess what? a FULL two years had gone by and it took THREE generation of icrap iphone to just have an expensive "me-also-run" video and GPS features, PATHETIC!

I don't get it... The silly iPhone resolution is 480x320. Obviously the graphics/cpu can handle HD video to such a low resolution. I managed to play 720i videos on a Nokia QVGA resolution with a cpu so much slower. If the iPhone had full HD resolution then obviously it wouldn't cope with that. Displaying higher resolution requires much more powerful hardware. Like your desktop PC with gaming... Higher the resolution the harder / more powerful graphics card you'll need.
