Bars and pie charts: a survey into mobile phone usage and owners

26 February, 2010
Android users are mostly males and iPod Touch owners are primarily teenagers. How do we know? We stumbled on a very interesting survey courtesy of AdMob, that's how. For example, did you know that...

A 5800 would freeze with flash with it's pitiful processor and lack of RAM.

A phone with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor (Nexus) has trouble dealing with Flash.

Imagine if your boss pulled out a 5800 with the dangly, cheap plastic thing and started poking around on it, it'd be real hard not to laugh.

What is that thing anyway, a broken bottle top?

Maybe if we use something like Opera or Skyfire, the survey cannot detect what kind of phone is being used. This might be why Symbian users, who usually do not use the default browser, are not shown on the survey. Heck, Opera mobile on Nokia 5800 is amazingly fast, probably faster than iphone. Plus Skyfire allows full flash support.

            hunks & dudes,babies & oldies....
need not to fight over Nokia or Apple friends....

Apple really generates that "APPLICATION DOWNLOADING INTERNET TRAFFIC"
            Reasons we all know.

Apple need continuous updates, For that you need internet.
For any new apple application download, you need internet.
For any new ringtone, you need internet.
Android also need internet for updating.
But Symbian is free & open to all. We need not to buy applications for Symbian like in apple. That's why Symbian generates only 20% traffic of APPLICATIONS DOWNLOAD (because some intense Symbian application we need to buy).

And about having money or not to buy iPHONE as written in a comment below,i want to say something. I have 2 Lakh Rupees to buy a Laptop. But if my necessities is just using internet, web surfing and chatting why dont i purchase a Netbook like Dell Mini 10 in just Rs.25,000. It will be foolish to pay 2 Lakh for buying Dell Alienware Laptop for just Web Surfing.
If i can have all office, productivity, multimedia, security softwares available free in SYMBIAN why should i waste money in buying iPHONE applications? Better i donate that money to an orphanage.
Just trying to explain use or misuse of money by using SYMBIAN and iPHONE. (I prefer SYMBIAN & Windows OS.I own E63 & HTC HD2)

Coz the browsers that i've previously used don't show my phones model (ex. Opera mini [all ver.]). Heck, even on the symbian opera, phone model can be changed by anyone who knows how to read. Plus the fact that various modifications/proxies that would make it look like we were using Desktop Browsers (ie/mozilla firefox). Same goes for winmo phones.

Nokia is outdated with their tech and is now (trying) to catch up. It's horrible to browse the net with Nokia phones... last time I checked.

Android is very good, but it's still new. It's no secret that early adopters are generally males. Look at IT jobs, for example. And woman feel an Apple fruit more cute than an Android.

Wow... the way you say I could raise the prejudice even more... and you know... it's Apple and all its stereotypes. ;-) But I won't go that route! :-)

Admob is owned by Google and information is collected all over the world.

Average age of iPhone owners is 37 which proves it's no a "kid's phone".

The iPhone dominates web browsing in every survey done on smartphone web browsing, that's because they are owned by adults with real phone plans with data who aren't afraid to use them.

They aren't kids who have to beg their parents for prepaid credit for their Nokia wannabe PAYG toys.

The Android one is interesting mainly owned by males, I wonder if they dress up in Star War clothes when they are not endlessly fiddling with their Android phones.

Iphone really rules, and Nokia fanboys don't want to hear it so they react so negatively on this report. This article that gsm arena posted is actually old news. Go search the web people. The iphone does have the most internet traffic share. Ask At&t as well, lol. It is also known that most photos uploaded on social web sites are coming from iphones, and that's not even included in this article. Sorry Nokia fanboys, but this article tells the truth. Think about this. Iphone buyers are required to get a data plan when you go through at&t. Nokia smartphone buyers are not required. With that said I can already say that a huge percentage of iphone users have data plan compared to Nokia smartphone owners.

I agreed with you.nokia really monopolized these regions esp in the philippines.coz every network provider support what nokia phone can offer.beside pre paid account is much popular in these regions where you can keep track of data spending.further more videocalling is popular here where iphone is lacking..yeah its true that everythng u do in iphone it involves data traffic fr sending a song tru email to downloading favorite mp3s.s60 openness knocks out iphone selfishness.u can dowload any s60 applications to ur nokia s60 fones w/o paying any single penny..

Given so few web pages used in these statistics it's hard to understand what biases are included in this data. ie are these only web pages shown as links from a particular marketplace. It does point out that it's highly likely that users of apple's and android operating systems are more likely to attempt to browse the web using there devices. it gives no insight into narrower applications such as real time traffic or weather that have been common in all smart phones.

People have to relax so what if gsmarena posted some survey. They cover and review every new major smart phone being released. If they really wanted to promote apple they would have just said every phone sucks compared to the iphone.

"The regular iPhone owner and an Android phone owner would download eight or nine apps a month. The difference is that half the iPhone users would pay for one of those apps, while only 21% of Android users will spend any cash." - GSMarena

How did you get "half the iphone users" when only 1.8 out of 8.8 apps are paid?
                                  Half of 8.8 is 4.4 -- not 1.8.

the reason why iphone has a lot of internet traffic is because it has to
you cant send files over bluetooth, use internet
you can set an mp3 ringtone without the internet
it constantly connects for software update
basically, if youre an advanced user, the iphone is useless offline
