Nokia look stupid but aren’t stupid, with all the advances in the mobile industry. The biggest player aren’t gonna screw up to much this quick. Symbian as a operating system is the most complete mobile operating system. No other mobile user can deny that. Its mass market but so functional that its hard to pull away from.

have had no issues with my 5800. Sure every model has a few duds and this guy Keith might have landed one of them. Can't blame him for complaining. I can multitask easily, neww firmware has added kinetic scrolling which is great and music is the best. free navigation is a bonus. And i really didnt pay that much for the fone, its not dirt cheap but not unnecessarily expensive like iphone which charges buyers for a backdated featureless fone which is made by breaching royalties.. Symbian can still last more than a year in current form and there will no doubt be upgrades like ^3 and ^4. People forget Sony Eric has started making symbian phones and good ones at that, if they continue it will last. Android is good, still requires 2 to 3 years though and I have never been a WinMo fan. Don't like the interface and maybe new one will make a difference but simply not interested.

[deleted post]That's great for you. What about those of us who don't live in Europe? Ever wonder why Nokia's marketshare is so terrible in North America? Limited services and support for their devices over here. And no free Ovi Maps on the 5800 here. They can keep fragmenting their services by region and people will keep switching to Android or WinPho 7 shortly.

[deleted post]Listen genius, I never said my Nokia 5800 doesn't multi-task. But it does lag ocassionally or the browser crashes if you're doing too much. Anybody who can't admit that hasn't had their 5800 for long enough or used it enough.

Anonymous, 28 Feb 2010That's your wish, that's your strong hate you have against ... moreIf your beloved Symbian is so successful, with S40/60 being the most popular O/S out there, why need to "upgrade" to Sympbian 2, 3, 4...10 or Maemo, Memo, Nemo, Meego, Nogo or whatever?
If the almighty brand isn't struggling, why has it been releasing different O/S (Symbian 3, Maemo, Meego)? What happened to Symbian 2?
If the above O/S are so good, any reason why other makers don't seem to adapt any of the above? Even SE goes for Android on its X10 (only it will be killed by the almighty brand...who simply stole the name). HTC & Samsung and Moto are also going for Android.
The Apple/Android O/S started to generate more data traffic, which is good news for the operators, and they sure wouldn't mind to "push" these handsets. The almighty brand, other than direct subsidies, may no longer please the operators as much.
Again, out of the x milion S40/S40 users, how many of them actually use the "smart" functions, i.e. download apps thru OVI stores like Apple/Android users? Most of these 2/6 series users, if not a few N6x/7x users, mostly only make/receive calls and SMS. The "smart O/S", be that Symbain or not, does not mean much to these people. All they care is if the handsets can perform the (basic) functions they want at reasonable price, which I do admit, quite likely the almighty brand has been subsidizing a good number of that $ to the operators.

Symbian is dying. Android, which came out 2 years ago has a better interface than this. I wont even mention how much better the new Windows Phone is going to be. Nokia only has so much market share because they sell cheap phones that are practically free. Phone that are very EASY to switch away from. They better come up with something better than this or their going to be killed like how Sony was pushed out of the MP3 market by Apple!!

Keith, 28 Feb 2010If this concept is the best they can do in this age of Andr... moreThat's your wish, that's your strong hate you have against nokia, because you will newer bee in top list, at least newer better than symbian nokia.
You forget that there is more than half of all phone users of the world is NOKIA and Symbian, and you expect all this people will just jump in to other platform just like that, well you and any one thinking like you is wrong all day long...., maybe 0.05% will try other platform, but they will for sure return to nokia, but there will bee up to 40% other phone platform users who will want to integrate using nokia and symbians, and why that, it's because good support, good and free software, easy and free UI programing with QT, very good quality device that even you can emulate like most other devices just for fun to get rid of iphons and androids.
Yeah i know about Android, it starts with big BOOM on rocks and end on sea bottom...lol.
They started with big price, and big expectations, and first week just few phones sold out, and they lie in media selling millions..lol!
The second week new strategy sell very cheap with most popular internet company contract.., well bit better but for how long!
So don't lie us about it, we know all about it, we see and hear, we know about this FAKE news and advertisings everywhere!

Sameepa, 28 Feb 2010You "can assure", Please don't make incorrect cla... moreYou can keep assuming I'm an iPhone fan if you want but that's just not the truth. I love my 5800 but I won't lie about it's performance. It lags bad when you start running several apps. Browser crashes far too often also. The app selection in the Ovi store is terrible. And I soooo grateful to Nokia for making Ovi maps free. Oh wait, I can't get that on my 5800. Great phone for what I paid for it. But this OS definitely has limitations and is getting beaten by the competition bad.....and I would never buy an iPhone. I don't believe in closed systems. Next will most likely be Android for me.

Keith, 28 Feb 2010@anonymous. I have a Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic and I can assur... moreYou "can assure", Please don't make incorrect claims like that. I have a 5800 and my friends have 5800s. Non of us any such problems. Just to test this, right now my 5800 is running the Music player, Calculator, Calander, Log, COntacts, File Manager, Opera Mobile, Gramin XT and the 3D game Bounce.
Everything is working perfectly and smoothly, even the game and kinetic scrolling. The music is also playing smoothly. When I take a call everything paused and then resumed afterwards.
There is something wrong with your 5800, check if it is genuine.
Please, all you Iphone fan boys, don't make incorrect claims when you don't know how to handle a "real smartphone".

If this concept is the best they can do in this age of Android and Windows Phone 7, the folks in Espoo might as well give up now and get out of the smartphone business. This is only the UI and they're behind. They're even more behind on apps and that crap Ovi app store. Desktop interface is utterly useless too. Integration with web search and web based services is behind too. Look at Android with Google or Windows Phone 7 with Bing. Look at Google Maps and Google Earth on a Nexus One or Bing maps on WinPho 7 (particularly the automatic local search feature). That's what consumers want. They can pretty up the UI but it still won't be able to compete if it doesn't have everything else. So far all I see in Symbian is a 'dead man walking'.

[deleted post]No. I don't think it's the iPhone that will kill Symbian. It's Android that's sneaking up. Apple's got one phone and exclusive carriers. That limits marketshare. Android's got many manufacturers and by the end of the year every carrier will be selling Android phones. They'll come at many price points and many form factors. Fanatics on here can keep ranting about the iPhone while Android kills Symbian and HTC does serious damage to Nokia's smartphone business.....and this is before Windows Phone 7 shows up to the party. But feel free to keep your eye on the wrong ball (iPhone).

deep space bar, 28 Feb 20105.5% remember look who all chipped at it RIM Palm ... moreIn most businesses 5.5% drop or 10% relative drop in market share is a big deal. Who cares how many companies it takes to do this? If this trend keeps up, Nokia will be irrelevant for smartphones in 4-5 years and out of the smartphone game in 8-9. If you don't think it's possible, just ask Nintendo and Sega what happened when Microsoft and Sony entered the console market and see what happened when Apple started making music players. If Symbian doesn't improve a lot it will get eaten alive by Android, the iPhone and Windows 7.

Anonymous, 28 Feb 2010Nokia and symbian is the best, no mater how bad UI cosmetic... more@anonymous. I have a Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic and I can assure you that it can barely handle more than 2 things at once. In theory Nokias can multi-task. In practice this only works if you have a very high end Nokia, like the N900. This is not the case with Android where even the cheaper phones work well or the iPhone where performance is consistent across all models.

Nokia and symbian is the best, no mater how bad UI cosmetics is, when it comes to Operating System is best, several tasks running simultaneous listening to music in the background, multichating in internet and watch movie in nWIDE video screen in stereo speakers loud and clear you made think is inside nokia a CPU of over 1000MHz in just about 20MB ram usage it does all without distorting sound or video, so is there any other OS that can do so much on a similar device properties..., no, there is not, that's just the king Symbian Nokia.
This nokia-haters who enter nokia forums attacking and try to degrade nokia devices as one excuse front UI cosmetics or numbers in MHz, well they have maybe double the numbers in MHz, but their phone does only one thing at time...!
This guys are jelouse at nokia, they would be best but nokia is on their way and can't jump on list to be first...lol.
Some of them are sellers they stuck and cant sell this aples and androids because all love nokia products.
Some of them are fun-boys aple fundamentalist and they don't want to exist the outside difernt OS world, because they were educated like that from their aple-jesus-stew with stolen property.
Some other find no support from their companies the device they got, and them it seem they are seeking help from nokia users, with provocative questions and answers to find out the truth about mystery of nokia OS power on that crunched dimensions, by blaming nokia users it's ui, it's MP or MHz counting's, but they are not aware of that they are being fulled around from this companies by claiming bigger or larger in RAM MP's pr MHz with purpose marketing and profits!

"This is ugly, this is my opinion, that watch on the UI... By the way I think they will make it much cooler, if not, Symbian 4 will be dead. By thew way Symbian 3 devices will come this year."
Phlease... This is CONCEPT. Anyone who understands anything about user interface design, can tell you just that. A concept how the UI works, what kind of basic functionality it will have etc. This concept could as well be made of lego bricks at this point.
What the Nokia version of Symbian 4 UI will look like is a completely unknown at this point and a different matter. It will look good, I can imagine. This UI concept does not tell us anything about it yet.
So it is definately no point to discuss some clock widget or icon colours based on a UI concept.
