LG hints its G5 will have a removable battery while poking fun at Samsung

29 January, 2016
Many users were upset when Samsung decided to discontinue a removable battery design and we hope LG does not go the same direction as Samsung as LG is one of the few phone makers that still design its smartphones with hot-swappable battery.

Who the hell cares about a removable battery. I've had many handsets and never had to swap out a battery once. I'll take samsung's sleek sexy s6 with sealed battery, non expandible flash memory and glass back over LG's big thick ugly ass plastic outdated looking handset any day. Samsung is awesome and options like the VR headset is icing on the cake. Sammy is not just a phone. It's an experience. People talk shit about lg still having removable battery and sd card yet their sales suck.

Anonymous, 30 Jan 2016Just because the battery is sealed does not mean that it do... moreDon't make me angry. Tell me one thing, ONE thing good about sealed batteries.

The often cited one of "better looks" is shot down if you use a mechanism to swap the battery (ala LG 5) .

And the other often cited argument ("it makes the phone slimmer") is an even worse, cause you can simply use a lower capacity replaceable one to make an equally slim phone. Yes it will have 500 MaH less, but so what? Your sealed battery will hold less charge in less than a year anyway!

Also I can swap it in the middle of the day. What do you do when you're low on battery? Oh I know, search for plugs wherever you are, tethering your phone and tethering yourself...

Anonymous, 30 Jan 2016Far worse: 1) Makes the phones fat and ugly 2) Takes a ... moreA hundred times this! A hot swappable battery would be super awesome!!! They should provide a second inbuilt reserve battery which can hold power for 5-10 mins or so. No need to reboot the phone then. It can also act as a critical last reserve for emergency 911 calls. They can bundle a battery charging cradle and an extra battery. Whenever your battery is low just remove it and put the charged one in, place the depleted battery in the cradle and its done! 90 seconds tops and completely seamless battery top up from 0 to 100 percent. The recent patent which denotes the ejection mechanism for the battery will be a perfect fit for such implementation.
This will be a great USP. Much better than wireless charging or fast charging. IMO.
Why hasn't someone else got this figured out? We can make phones lighter and slimmer with this. Using many smaller, lighter batteries instead of one large one. Like 2x2500mAh (Hot Swappable) vs 1x3500mAh (Sealed).
If Gionee can do it then why not LG?
Hoping for it to turn into a reality..

                  Good job

                    Samsung:

Before - Swappabble batteries: Full power in under 90 seconds.

Today - Sealed batteries: Full power in under 90 minutes.

Samsung has regressed than progressed with its flagship products. Only the underpowered users with vanity as their main purpose would buy Samsung shiny gold colored, fragile glass devices. Even justify 64 GB as "enough" while still carrying OTG to compensate.

Anonymous, 30 Jan 2016Using extended battery (2x or 3x bigger than stock battery)... moreYeah i agree, it takes ages to charge my phone with my power bank!
But i also would need to buy a separate battery charger because putting the battery in the phone just to charge it after another is kinda stupid :S

It's great relief Samsung gets questioned about ditching the removable battery aspect of their flagship devices since the S6. I hate the idea of fixed batteries. That's why I'm not impressed with the Note.5. That sealed battery will surely have degraded performance in 6 months or so.

I recently got my order of 2 double-capacity extended batteries for my Note 3. Daily, I can consume up to 8GB, 6-8 hours of screen on usage time - but I needed to swap sometime late afternoon. So, having double-capacity just gives me no hassle of doing all my usual heavy functions without swapping.

I'll cycle both batteries and swap them like once a month for reducing the degradation of their ability to hold power charges. I don't mind having the hump at the rear. The extra weight is equivalent to an extra battery, and there's significant factor to handling the Note 3.

Anonymous, 30 Jan 2016Using extended battery (2x or 3x bigger than stock battery)... moreFar worse:

                          1) Makes the phones fat and ugly
                          2) Takes a year to charge
                          3) Carrying a regular spare in your wallet is nothing, swapping it is 1 minute topa., but carrying an effing brick every day is a curse.

NEVER go with a monster battery, go with two smaller ones. To make the "pain" of swapping easier LG should add a secondary 200 may battery (like gionee didi). Peace.

                                    - It's better than having a spare battery and swapping them all the time.
                                    - It's also better than using power bank/external battery case, because if you use them, they charge the phone's battery. It leads to more frequent charging, which will shorten the lifespan of the phone's battery even faster.
