Adoption of the latest software goes really slow but hey 90% of all android phones are not even compatible with the latest edition. This OS is really fragmented. How pathetic.

AnonD-488240, 03 Feb 2016Updating is definitely essential. There are all the new fea... moreVery well put, the security updates are one of my top priorities, therefore the way I shop for a new phone is quite simple: I go to the Cyanogenmod website and see which models are officially supported.
Like you already pointed-out, that's why the S6 (Edge) was a no go for me.
As an additional note, today the main reason I want to buy a new phone is the figerprint reader (unlock). In my mind that alone is worth the upgrade (yeah, Apple got it right in their timing and implementation -- even though others like Motorola thought of that way before the iPhone).
I do not however quite agree with the ART argument, mainly because KK also had ART available as a choice (in some devices at least), therefore that advantage shouldn't really be the main-drive to upgrade from KK.

For my Z2 5.0 was a mistake but 5.1.1 works great so no way i will risk with 6.0.

Updating is definitely essential. There are all the new features brought by android 5.1 including the new and much faster ART engine replacing dalvik, and the brand new montly security updates provided by google that might require a newer version than 4.x (not really sure on that point).
So android fragmentation is really a problem, and this article is the best argument for an unlocked bootloader so that users like me have the choice to update to cyanogen or other mods.
As soon as cyanogen offered an update to counter the stagefright bugs / backdoors, I have updated my smartphone whereas many users with more recent high end mobiles have waited many more weeks or months, and the vast majority of android users is still waiting for an update to stagefright 1.0 and 2.0.
I am also in favor of a tighter cooperation between hardware manufacturers and the mod teams. Qualcomm shared the driver sources for their snapdragon processors with cyanogen and that's why their processors are so well supported by this particular mod. However because samsung didn't share anything about their exynos 7420 processor, the galaxy s6 doesn't offer this great choice. I even wonder if the galaxy s6 bootloader is unlocked ? This is why I didn't buy a samsung s6 even though I really wanted to...

only 1% that's Ridiculous, already passed couple of months still 1%. GOOGLE need to learn form Microsoft how to provide universal update without any bug.

Unless Google's versioning is against proper convention there should be significant changes between 4 and 5, hell, even the 4.X versions should be different enough from each other to count as fragmentation.

Unbelievable that over a third of Android users are still on KitKat. This will forever be Android's problem. It's hard to recommend anything but a Nexus for the very few people I know who still want Android devices.

One has a USB type C and the other Micro USB 2, and I can safely say both are covered. For storage and external hardware souch as a keyboard and mouse.

Google releases the code for developers the same day they release it for the Nexus phones, so it is physically impossible for manufactures to merge their proprietary code with Google's, run vigorous tests, branch the code for each model, make changes specific to each model, more tests, get it certified by carriers, and then seed it, all on the same day.
If you want to, you can take the same code Google posts on it's site, and build it for your own phone. That's what I have done. Then you can have Marshmellow whenever you want it. You need to realize that each OEM is responsible for it's own version of Android, so you can say the Samsung's Touchwiz on their phones is still 30% on Lollipop and 0% Marshmallow, but then that's the latest of Touchwiz that has been seeded. Just like iOS9.3 is the latest Apple has seeded, even if iOS10 exists.

Nexus 6P is too costly and nexus 5x looks too old so very few users bought them.
